Affliction, aired February 18, 2005

Kevin Thomas Riley's review

The episode: Phlox is kidnapped by Klingons who have infected their own people with a deadly virus in a vain attempt to create Klingon augments to rival the human augments Soong developed. Meanwhile, it is revealed that in his murky past Reed was a member of Section 31 and is currently withholding information from Archer about the Klingons and their highjinks. What follows is the far more intriguing tale of Trip and T’Pol, in search of inner peace, or How to meet up with your significant other while lightyears apart, both figuratively and actually.

Yikes! Trip is packing to leave his love, Enterprise! Oh, yeah, and, you know, what’s her name. That Vulcan dame.


OMT looks out the window and sees a new love…Columbia! The door chime sounds and it is…


…yeah, you guessed it, the old love, the Vulcan dame. Of all the gin joints in all the starships, why did she have to choose Trip’s quarters? Maybe Trip hadn’t yet showed T’Pol Casablanca? Next time he falls in love he will be sure to include all the angsty movies to avoid just this type of situation.

Trip nonchalantly draws T’Pol’s attention to the Columbia, “a thing of beauty.” Hmm, is he referring to T’Pol or the *other* ship?


T’Pol the Logical (dressed in red) points out that Columbia is virtually identical to Enterprise.

Trip the Connoisseur responds that a good engineer can see the differences.

OK, my mind was a bit in a whirl – is Trip talking about T’Pol or Columbia? If this is all doublespeak, who is T’Pol’s identical equivalent? Hernandez? Sorry, I don’t buy it. Hernandez may ply Trip with wonderful food, but can she drive him to be rude? Well, can she? No, only T’Pol can make Trip forget his manners and snap at her. Ah, T’Pol, you vixen!


Trip asks if T’Pol is going to his going away party, but T’Pol is still back on the career path thingy. Trip isn’t getting promoted, and therefore his choice is illogical. And she just knows Trip wouldn’t leave Captain Archer…without sufficient reason.


Trip isn’t making the move to advance his career, he just really likes fixing up old (or, in this case, new) Starfleet ships.


It’s a challenge, T’Pol! And Trip can get Columbia out of dry dock quickly. Six months max. Max!


T’Pol the Skeptic: Are you leaving because of me? (Yes, folks, T’Pol has indeed figured out that SHE is the only logical reason Trip would leave Archer.)
Trip: Starfleet’s approved the transfer.
T’Pol: You didn’t answer my question.


Trip: This may come as a shock but not everything in my live revolves around you.








Ouch! Poor T’Pol! Trip has never been intentionally cruel before, and his response *was* a shock to T’Pol…and to me.


Phlox is kidnapped!


Trip on Columbia is trying to get those…people…to work. Why hasn’t Hernandez been able to get them moving? This does not bode well for how a female captain will be portrayed in this series. She should have been on top of the problem and not had to wait for Trip to come along.


Trip and Hernandez meet.


She tells him to get his uniform updated. He’s now part of the Columbia team! Hmm, is he happy about that? We shall see. Actually, I think he would be happy on Columbia – Trip is the type who could be happy just about anywhere.


When Phlox was kidnapped, Hoshi heard…something. Instead of hypnosis, we do The Vulcan Mind Meld to Hear What She Heard. “It’s just a hand to the face…Let’s do the Mind Meld again!”


T’Pol gets the mind meld on track!


She joins Hoshi and Phlox on that fateful walk after their dinner. She hears the words Hoshi heard. Rigelians! (We later find out the Rigelians were hired by the Klingons to get Phlox, and then all the Rigelians on that transport killed to cover the tracks of the Klingons.)


Hmm, the new Chief Engineer didn’t answer Archer’s call within the accepted 1.2534828131 seconds. It took 1.26 seconds, which is oh so unacceptable.


Trip dines with Hernandez, who tells him he failed the Columbia popularity contest. He annoyed two crew members by asking them to work…gasp! But, when asked why he inconvenienced Hernandez by asking for a transfer and having the unmitigated gall to get the ship in warp shape, he admits “Sometimes it’s easier to work with people who are just colleagues.” Poor Trip.


Cut to The Colleague, Exhibit A. The Colleague, AKA T’Pol the Logical, is off in her Quiet Zone.














T’Pol: Why are you here?


Trip: I was about to ask you the same thing. Is this a daydream?


T’Pol: I’m meditating. This is where I go in my mind.


Trip: Well, I would’ve thought you’d pick a more interesting place.


Trip: Like the beach! Or one of those fire plains you showed me! (Nice save, Tucker!)


“Please leave.” (But, this is a Vulcan speaking, so in reality what she said was…PLEASE LEAVE!!!!!!!!!!)


Trip: Exactly where am I suppoed to go? (Love the baroque gestures Trip gives us in this scene!)


T’Pol: Away. (And, translated from Vulcan, AWWWAAAAYYYYY!!!!!)


Trip: This is MY daydream. YOU go away!





Trip is brought back to reality by one of the Columbian whiners. He leaves T’Pol’s Quiet Zone.


What the hell?


T’Pol is definitely thinking her Quiet Zone needs to be redrawn.


A…Klingon? Klingon augments invade Enterprise and do something to Trip’s systems which…well…which would annoy Trip. And, yes, you may ask…why wasn’t T’Pol gatekeeping her man’s systems as a good helpmate would? What are Vulcans coming to these days?


Archer orders T’Pol and Hoshi to reconstruct the data from the black box on the Rigelian freighter. (The black box MALCOLM erased! Oh, Malcolm! Trip leaves and you become a…TRAITOR!)


T’Pol in Blue! Time has passed (at least a day) and T’Pol and Hoshi chit chat over reconstructing the data contained in the black box. Well, you know that *can* be a boring task!
Hoshi: What do you think?
T’Pol: We may be able to reconstruct the directory with a recursive algorithm.
Hoshi (what an awkward segue made palatable only because time has passed – evidence of Blue Outfit): Is it unusual to have weird dreams after a mind meld?
T’Pol: Subconscious thoughts are often exchanged. They sometimes surface during sleep. (And T’Pol would know this…how? Isn’t mind melding new to her? This is weak, weak, weak.)
Hoshi: I had a dream last night. Commander Tucker was in it. We were in a strange place. It was all white. There was almost a…romantic quality to it. (?!!!!???) I don’t ever remember dreaming about Commander Tucker before.


The console beeps.
T’Pol: Most unusual. (LOL!!! Great Vulcan avoidance technique! Very funny way for T’Pol to comment on Hoshi’s dream without actually commenting on it. Loved it.)





T’Pol and Hoshi break the bad news. Malcolm erased the black box!


Malcolm is crushed! Archer won’t listen and/or trust him!


Trip gets Columbia in shape in record time! Yay, Trip! Columbia leaves dry dock at warp!


(RED!) Something is wrong with Enterprise. Those darn Klingons! Can’t take them anywhere. And they did a number on Trip’s love (the ship, not his ship – T’Pol’s grasp on which ship she is to be protecting got very confused here. She doesn’t realize that she is both The Ship and The Ship. Got that? Good!)


Enterprise can only be saved by going faster and faster through space. Warp speed times *x*. Enterprise needs…Trip. Stay tuned!

A whole mess of folks have made comments

i can't believe Trip brushed T'pol of like that. It's driving me crazy. i need a resolution between them. But, didn't you just love their little spat about who was in the others daydream/meditation. maybe this has to do with 'Bound'. can't wait =:)

Can't wait to see this... only a little while longer for me, fate permitting.

Loved the little daydream spat too. Maybe I'm too much of a trip obsessor, but as cold as it was for him to brush her off, she totally deserved a slap for herself

They can't cancel the show, it's just getting to the really good stuff! That bit with Malcolm was a bit shocking, though. I never expected him to pull a "Bashir". Great bit with the dream thing. I have to say I loved T'Pol's face when Hoshi mentioned her dream. :)

i wonder why this whole dream thing only came up when trip transferred, though? i mean, if it is some whole mind connection thing why didn't it start before?

i didnt like it when trip brushed tpol off like that. that slap....man, i winced. maybe she deserved it, i dunno. but what happened to the all-in-love trip we used to know? he needs to snap out of it if you ask me.

this was a very enjoyable episode, she totally deserved the harsh treatment, i say trip scored a couple points in this round

so we learned a couple of things in this episode
1. hoshi can kick some arse
2. malcolm is a bad boy
3. polly can make a "surprise" face

I think T'Pol did deserve that slap. I'm sure Trip's new attitude is a way of protecting himself from the pain. I turned to my husband and said, "Ouch." T'Pol, the poor thing, is in new territory, not knowing how to deal with it. If Trip were Vulcan, her little professionalism-will-end-relationship brush-off in "The Aenar" might have worked, but our Trip is human. =P

As for why they stumbled upon the bond so recently, I personally think Trip's distance is exactly what brought it on. T'Pol was obviously very upset (not that you'd notice just how much) about his leaving. While she was meditating, perhaps she unconsciously reached out to him with her mind. I was trippin' at this part (no pun intended) because I had read several 'what if' fan fictions that depicted Trip and T'Pol as 'bonded' but I *never* thought I would see it in the show. Trip's not telepathic! T'Pol must be packing some serious psyche to breach the telepathic gap.

I loved this episode.. I keep picturing T'Pol's stunned expression as she stared at Hoshi. =P (T'Pol's thinking, "Oh no, she's gonna figure out it was ME and tattle to the whole ship!")

Oh my god this episode sounds REALLY good. I haven't seen it yet but the suspence is really starting to build up!!!!!!!!

Loved the Ep. Even though T/T are apart. (but not in spirit!)

Whoo hoo, I can watch it. Be back in an hour to let you know my opinion.

Totally awesome episode. I lost track of all the story lines. It's such a relief that TPTB decided to continue with T/T. The next couple of episodes are going to kick ass!

Hoshi totally knows. Hell, the entire ship knows about T/T... I think Hoshi was trying to get T'Pol to spill the beans about her and Trip... "oh, do people have weird dreams after they're exposed to the other person's mind in the meld? 'Cuz I had that weird dream about Trip! I never dream about Trip! Does this mean I'm interested in him? No... wait... but YOU are! Yeah! Say it, say it, say it!! Polly likes Trippy, Polly likes Trippy!" Um, at least that's what it seemed like. Just that Hoshi picked the wrong partner for a "girl talk"...

And Trip was such a 4 year old... "this is MY daydream, YOU go away!" Hahahahaha!!! I loved that episode...

Loved this episode...heck this whole season has been the best of all! I can't wait to see how the stills come out. T\T white scene was halarious and in typcal T\T fashion they get interupted. LOL! Never fails!

Oh my god it was good!!! I do think that T'Pol deserved that slap, I mean look at all the slaps she gave Trip and hers were way harsher. I loved the T/T scene and the face T'Pol made when Hoshi mentioned the dream she'd had. It was really great. I so can't wait till the next episode, the star trek site says "Later, when Trip temporarily returns to Enterprise, T'Pol tries to broach an uncomfortable subject with him." Hmmm... sounds interesting huh?... This all totally seams like a lead-up to Bound... I hope...
I love you Trip...

Did you guys notice two tiny things?

Firstly when Trip met his new Capt she told hime to change his uniform a little bit. And a shot of him looking like 'I'll miss ya'.

2ndly when Archer calls for the chief engineer you have a shot of T'Pol looking with big eyes. No response and a 2nd shot of T'Pol. Remininding here that her guy is on another ship.

Also the talk Trip and Hernandeze have during dinner. She want's to know why he left E.
And you clearly can tell that she know he's had some relational problem. (wise women like her can read men like were the books)

And the white scene is brilliant.
Trip asking T'Pol why he choose this boring place and that look on here face. Clearly slap #2.
She even gets agitated.

And something quite odd is Archer guiding T'Pol in a mindmeld. Which a 'normal' Vulcan probably would consider highly inappropriate.

This is my first time posting on this site but I religiously check House of Tucker.

I loved this episode! I agree with others, T'pol completely deserved the slap she got from Trip. She had gone above and beyond to convey to Trip that they were not going to happen and she didn't feel the same way he did (might I add, very transparent to all of us viewers). So he's really hurt and needs to defend himself in the same manner that she's been doing. And the way she didn't respond but walked out in that oh so false "La de da, didn't hear that and I'm not completely wounded on the inside" way was wonderful.
I thought the white space scene was all too perfect. Even though this was very confusing for both parties, Trip just slid back into their old rhythm of flirtful bickering. And I love T'Pol's face when Hoshi's talking about her dream...very "Oh dear, this could prove interesting". And the fact that Hoshi was in T'Pol's place and felt the romantic quality of the dream from that position...makes me squeal with fan girl delight.

She has been so cruel to him lately. I think he has just had enough. If she is not careful, he just might make it permanent!

I really loved seeing Trip smile again. He seems to like his new assignment.

Manny Coto said in a interview that bound had a double meaning both with the slave girls and "something else"

Oh I loved this epi and yes the best part is when trip tells Tpol to leave because its his daydream I wonder why Hoshi saw it too that was weird I didn't like that but meh it was interesting and Reed being part of section 31 shouldn't he have done a better job of covering his ass?

But no one seems to have noticed... does this episode not imply that Malcolm works for Section 31? The mysterious boss' outfit looks awfully familiar...

i really liked all the little nuances in this one, the look mal had when the new cheif engineer didnt respond as quickly as trip does, all the sarcastic come backs delivered by the klingons: "very observant", and a few others i cant remember, any way it was absolutely fabulous

And Malcolm SO has to be working for section 31. Black leather suit and "secret organisation" the only quizzie is then, why do we know who malcolm is? don't they erase the live f section 31 members so it's like they don't exist? Maybe it's because off malcolm that they make that rule up?

In an interview with Manny Coto, he said:

"'Bound' is a standalone episode. We saw so little of the Orion Slave girl in "Borderland" that I wanted to do a whole episode where we see more of them and have some fun with them. The Orions are a major part of this episode, but it's really an episode about Trip and T'Pol. Bound is a double meaning: not only the slaves, but Trip and T'Pol, we find, are also 'bound.' "

hoshi totally knows about tnt and the lot of starfleet probably do also, she is after all a communications (gossip) officer, she can breakdown any type of language, be it spoken or otherwise

btw porcia section 31 is like a non-existant security/black ops type of organisation, it exist, but it doesn't

Gosh, you guys are so lucky. Only Season 2 here in Japan on cable right now. Thank God for modern technology! I cannot wait for the caps! By the way, I also heard they are going to start Season 3 in May here. So, maybe another year till Season 4????? I think I will continue to be technology addict for now.

I just wanted to say that here in Brazil they'll show last episode of season 3 this Friday, and we'll have to wait till September to see season 4... NOT fair to keep us waiting!

Y'know, all of you who have to wait for episodes 'cause of living in Europe or Australia, etc do have ONE good thing going for you... you still have a whole season left! Us Canadians and Yankees have gobbled up everything there is and now are left with, what? seven episodes? We must save it!

it reminds me of the times when i was living in BONN as an exchange student. back in 2000 when Voyager was on Germany was only in it's 3rd or 4th season (when janeway had the wig) i was missing out on the 6th seaon i belive. i was in turmoil and my host family made fun of me.

by the way, anybody wanting to learn a language should totally watch their favorite flicks or shows in that language. You lose a little in the translation, but it works out.=:) HOw can they get rid of Enterprise when there is obviously a great world wide fan basis. this sucks=:(

AND i hope T/T get together this episode coming up. i'm dying for a kiss. we should be allowed a couple of episodes before the end! anyway

Just wanted to way you've got a great site here:) I loved Affliction! I loved everything about it! But the best was Trip and T'Pol connecting over the meditation! You can tell they were both freaked out about it LOL! And how sad...T'Pol is so hurt by Trip going away:( I've decided I don't like angry-Trip as I've been calling him since he's been so snarky to T'Pol but then we have to realize that T'Pol been rather harsh to him. I mean she did get married to another guy and then once she's free (divorced) she essentially "breaks up" with Trip telling him essentially she needs space. But then of course you have to feel for T'Pol because was "forced" to get married to a man she didn't love and then her mother died:( She's been thinking about all new thoughts with the Ki'Shara (I'm sure I spelled that incorrectly!) and she seriously has no idea what to do with Trip or how to respond to him. She it's just so messed up but the course of true love never did run smooth LOL:) I love the angst! Poor Trip! He loves T'Pol too much and he's so worried about her he can't be a good engineer! And I'm so excited about the next ep's synopsis that T'Pol tries to talk to Trip about something uncomfortable... I'm thinking the meditation scene! Yippee! Can't wait for next ep!

just great picture!!. I hope we will see them soon in germany. This weekend the last two episodes of season 3 will be send. I then we get a rerun from season 1. I really really hope we will see them soon. and I am so sad the show ended. First I was skeptical but soon I was a great fan especially from Trip. I hope the maker knew this is a bad decision to cancell this show

Spoilers are facts about what will happen in future episodes, but the facts are often isolated from the stories and therefore difficult to interpret. I don't like spoilers because they ruin my enjoyment of the show because people speculate so much about what the spoilers mean. I prefer to see what Mr. Coto has come up with, and he is giving us some great stuff!

Actually, if you write the greetings and why you love the characters in your own language, that might be fun for the actors to read. Imagine getting emails in German, Dutch, Swedish, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, and all the other languages people who visit this site speak!

These scenes in this ep with T'Pol are some of the best in quite awhile, and are difficult to appreciate with caps, though Myst123 did a great job as usual. I just loved it when, in the meditation/day dream, when Trip asks her, "where am I supposed to go?", she turns to him with those fantastic eyes and says "AWAY!". You just have to watch it. I rewound it several times (yea I still got a vcr) and couldn't get enough of her expression in that scene.

Also, with her and Hoshi (a GREAT scene with these two...I hope there are more coming), when Hoshi tells her about her strange dream....T'Pol's reaction to Hoshi telling her of the "romantic" element of the dream...priceless. T'Pol can't believe what she's hearing. Great acting. Great writing. What a shame this is coming to an end. It's going to go out with a bang, folks.

And I don't mind saying now, with this being the final season, that I have become infatuated with T'Pol, I just love her. I don't think I've felt this way before over a ficticious character.

MAN I love this show, I loved it from the first episode. I love this website! And isn't it just brilliant how many people from all over the world love this show? I am so lame I have hardly even seen much of season 3 ( I have just graduated university and am too broke at the mo to afford cable). THANKYOU SO MUCH to all the people involved in this site. WE would all die without you. They cannot cancel this show. Maybe it's just a ruse, to get us all excited. Maybe there will be a season5 - there has to be, it's getting so good! They can't cancel the show!They just can't!I wish I had the money to fly to L.A.for the rally. I have written many letters though. Me, too, I loved it from the first episode on. But I haven't seen much of the 2nd season. Now I watch every episode of season 3 (here in Germany they are on Saturdays and Sundays).

I wished Enterprise wouldn't be ending but I don't think that anything could be done against it.

I look forward to watching season 4 by the end of the year. Enterprise forever!
