The Augments

The Augments, aired November 12, 2004

Kevin Thomas Riley's review

Great ep! And a very interesting Trip and T'Pol conversation. Personally, I prefer Elizabeth and Darcy (Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice) over Romeo and Juliet. pookha mentioned Shakespeare's Beatrice and Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing, which is also an interesting comparison.

Hmm, what do you think of image a10? It was an accident, but I left it in.

Meanwhile, back on Cold Station #12, Archer has stopped the pathogens from spreading to the remaining people on the station, but Archer himself is at risk. He tells T'Pol to target the area where he is located so that the core will decompress and he will be ejected into space, at which point Enterprise has a few seconds to transport Archer safely back to the ship. "Commander, do you have him?" Polly asks her Commander Tucker.

"Yeah, we need a medic down here!"

Hmm, maybe T'Pol has a few precious seconds enroute to sickbay in which she can switch outfits, since the purple one doesn't seem to be working as a means of re-capturing Mr. Tucker's attention.

Trip had several great lines in this episode.

The senior staff has gathered around Archer in sickbay to discuss how to follow Soong into Klingon space safely. Trip great line #1: "I could paint a bird of prey on the hull." Archer gives Trip a *look* which says, "Oh yeah? and then watch what I do to your precious engines, buddy."

Malcolm prudently suggests faking a Klingon warp signature instead. Trip thinks that's doable.

T'Pol realizes the red outfit isn't doing the job either. Trip is waayyy over there on the other side of the biobed instead of plastered to her side. Hmm, maybe this marriage thing is going to interfere with their relationship after all. But, wait! There is always the blue outfit! That might do it!

Trip is blabbing on about how it will take a year to get Cold Station #12 cleaned up. Yes, the blue outfit is in order.

Trip has disguised the ship as a Klingon battle cruiser. Woohoo, Trip! Thinking big there, aren't you fella!

They've found Soong, and that weasel has altered course.

Soong knows his opponent well and dumps the Denobulan hostage near a planetary system. Archer has to choose between saving the hostage or pursuing Soong. Which do you think he chose? Soong waves and goes to warp.

Archer enters into his log that Trip and T'Pol are trying to enhance sensors to locate that damn bird of prey. Well, that may what Trip is doing. T'Pol realizes that the last outfit she has - the beautiful blue - has failed as well. What to do? What to do?

"How are your parents?"

Real smooth, T'Pol. But, really, folks, Trip has never ignored her this way before. When they first met, he argued with her. Then he would intersperse his arguing with flirting and teasing. But this is beyond T'Pol's experience. She doesn't know what to do. He has shut her out. Actually, this scene was hard to watch - Trip isn't there emotionally for T'Pol, and she slowly realizes what they had is over.

Also interesting is that apparently Trip has talked to T'Pol about his family and has stopped - he may consider information about his family very personal.

"They're...fine," Trip responds, a bit puzzled. "They moved into a new house in Mississippi. It's not like the old place in Panama City, but it's pretty nice. Why do you ask?"

"You haven't spoken of them recently," responds T'Pol. "In fact, you've said very little since I returned from Vulcan."

"There hasn't been a lot of time to catch up," Trip says offhand. He doesn't even really look at her. Maybe a glance in her general direction at best.

"You also haven't joined us at the Captain's table since we left earth."

"What are you trying to say?" Trip replies, almost impatiently.

"You've been avoiding me."

"Well, maybe I have. You've got to admit it's a little awkward. You're married. I know you did it to help your mother, but it's going to take me a little while to adjust."

"I'm still adjusting to it myself."

"This is going to sound strange, but as tough as it was watching you go through the ceremony, I was proud of you for what you did."

Trip: "I guess it's for the best."

T'Pol: "What do you mean?"

Trip: "Come on. It's not like we would have made the ideal couple...

...a Vulcan and a human?...

...Romeo and Juliet probably stood a better chance."

Suddenly they detect what they think may be the bird of prey. Trip reports to the bridge. T'Pol absorbs the fact that Trip doesn't think they ever had a chance to have a successful relationship. She takes in the whole meaning of what he said.

The two actually made sure they clarified what the other was saying/asking before jumping to conclusions. In the end I don't think Trip really believes what he said, but I think T'Pol believes what he said. He has never been so clear and matter of fact with her. He is covering up his pain by distancing himself, but T'Pol sees a man she has never seen before and believes he has changed towards her. She interprets his coldness not just to the marriage, but also to the fact that he never believed they could succeed.

T'Pol is back on the bridge. They come across a Klingon ship, but are able to fool the Klingon crew using Trip's disguise and Hoshi's universal translator. They are on their way to find Soong.

Jumping ahead in the episode, Malik has turned on Soong and confined the mere human to quarters. Persis helps Soong escape using a pod and he is picked up by Enterprise. Soong tells Archer that Malik plans to take pathogens stolen from CS12 and dump them into the atmosphere of a Klingon colony to create an incident between humans and Klingons which will keep both occupied for years to come. That Malik is one devious, twisted soul. Archer believes Soong and has Trip and T'Pol work with the mad scientist to find Malik et al.

Trip and T'Pol are no longer joined at the hip. They make sure there is plenty of light visible between their bodies and that their body language visually close them off from each other.

In hot (heh, heh, heh) pursuit, Soong asks Trip how long they can sustain warp five. Trip great line #2: "As long as the Captain wants it, or until we blow up, whichever comes first."

Soon apologizes to T'Pol about "that business with the Orions" and hopes she wasn't permanently injured.

Trip great line #3: "Why don't you stay focused on what you are doing."
Soong: "Ooh! Someone's a little protective of Commander T'Pol!"

Trip great line #4: "I just don't like you very much."

Zane speculates that Soong knows about Trip and T'Pol because of the media coverage after the return from the expanse. This makes sense because Soong tells Malcolm that Malcolm didn't get his share of publicity. Neither Trip nor Archer are surprised Soong knows about Trip and T'Pol.

Best appearance by the grapplers in any season of this series! This time the Klingons weren't fooled by the fake Klingon signature, so Archer has Malcolm use the grapplers to attach the two ships together and then has Travis whip the Klingons around. The Klingons attempt to shoot the grapplers and T'Pol reports that a shearing force is approaching critical. The force causes the grapplers to snap off and, in the process, the Klingon ship is disabled and unable to maintain a warp field. Enterprise is free to go. (Actually, all this technobabble was beyond me, so I hope this summary of what happened makes sense!)

The augments will reach the Klingon colony in 73 seconds and Enterprise is 2 minutes away.

Trip is concerned. Trip great line #5: "If we go any faster the nacelles are going to fly off the pylons!" Trip's engines are in danger! But wait, he hears his T'Pol (is keen Vulcan hearing catching?) say there are only 73 seconds left and he is on it! "I heard! I'll give you all I can!" he exclaims as he rushes to push the engines even harder! Ah, love and excellent hearing - quite the combo in this Vulcan/human partnership.

T'Pol is keeping track of time before the augments deploy the pathogens.

I should mention that, since we last saw him, Malik killed Persis with a knife to the side and gave her a kiss as she died. Malik is not a nice guy at all. Here we see the pathogens (green) deployed and speeding towards the colony. Enterprise has sent two torpedoes (gold) to destroy the pathogens.

Success! The pathogens are destroyed and the Klingon colonies saved!

Soong can't give up on his babies. He is devasted that only a few remain. Malik sets the bird of prey on self-destruct to kill himself and the remaining augments - he doesn't want them to be taken prisoner.

But of course Malik isn't *really* dead - he is the Freddy of space travel! Soong struggles and...

...Archer kills Malik with some sort of extremely powerful rifle set on kill, not stun. In the scene you can actually see Archer through the hole in Malik's body.

In the end, Enterprise returns to earth, the Klingons have called off plans to retaliate against earth, and Soong is put back in jail. Soong's last words as the episode ends: "I've been thinking. Perfecting humanity may not be possible. Cybernetics. Artifical life forms. I doubt I'll finish the work myself...might take a generation or two..." and he gets to work! Soong was great in this episode.

A whole mess of folks have made comments

This is a much better episode than last week's. Too bad Trip is pulling away from T'Pol, but it is realistic. T'Pol "married" another. Whether or not it was her duty, it still has to sting poor ol' Trip. . .

I loved how Soong commented on how protective Trip was of T'pol. Something like 'you're awefully protective of the commander aren't you' I especially with the grin Soong got on his face when Trip said 'no, I just don't like you!'

also loved the reference to Data at the end.

omg im so mad work was really late 2day i hate my boss

i missed the whole !@#$ thing
so so so so mad
if anyone wants to be super super nice they could fill me in....or not
thanx for the pics anyways, myst. they get better and better every time

as to the whole romeo/juliet vs. elizabeth/darcy....
totally love pride and prejudice, elizabeth and darcy are definitely better in my point of view, also because of the angst factor - i agree with you, myst

Thanks for being so quick with the caps! I've got another two days until I can see the episode for myself.

I agree on the Elizabeth/Darcy vs. Romeo/Juliet. I think Elizabeth and Darcy's relationship is more like T/T's than Romeo and Juliet. They were just going for the "star-crossed" thing, and that's the most well-known reference. Although, really, how boned up on early Earth literature do we think T'Pol is?

Ahhhhh....such a good episode!! And the caps are fantastic as always (btw, #10 is pretty cool. Could make for a nice avatar, no?). Thanks so much for the caps!!! And only one week 'til we go back to Vulcan. YAY

Poor Trip. He's hurting.

Anyone recognize the blond that they cut away to on the bridge? I think that she is new. What's the chances of her and Trip becoming an item. I can see a couple of episodes with T'pol trying to deal with that.

I've always said that Trip and T'Pol were the Lizzie and Darcy of the 22nd Century—with the gender roles reversed, of course. Actually, you could make a case for the characters parallelling those in just about any Jane Austen work. Right now, I'd say they are going through their Persuasion phase.

I enjoyed the whole three part episodes. I taped them and watched them over and over. The only thing I'm confused about is how Soong picked up on the relationship between Trip and T'Pol. Anyone have an answer?

Excellent screen caps as usual! This was much better episode than last weeks regarding T/T’P.

Is it just me or what? I was at the verge of tears when Trip commented about Human/Vulcan relationship not really working! But I think it’s Cato’s way of teasing us. There has to be more progression in their relationship in the next three episodes when they’re back in Vulcan… I hope.

Scarletwitch, yea I’m not sure how Soong picked up on T/T’P either. Maybe it’s very obvious to the outsider because of their interaction?

I would guess it’s Cato! To keep their relationship going with the story line and I love it. I think he’s doing an excellent job of not ignoring what happens in the previous episodes.

Nice caps as usual. This whole conversation with Trip and T'Pol has me intrigued now....I can't wait to see this for myself. And also why Archer looks like a popsicle on the transporter pad.

The referece to Data at the end was to die for! I didn't know if anyone else caught that but I was like "Yes!" when they said that.

Also, Poor Trip is trying to distance himself from T'Pol and a the possibility of a relationship because well, she's married. Poor Trip is too much of a gentleman to get involved with her now, no matter how much his heart is breaking.

Pic 10 is amazing! I must now make it my desktop pic.

Yikes, I had to miss that episode. And, pardon me, but are Elizabeth and Darcy??

Nice pics myst. Perhaps Trip and T'Pol must be able to say goodbye to their old relationship before a new one or a "next phase" can begin. That blonde on the bridge looked promising.

Archer looks like a popsicle because the vacuum of space has a temperature near absolute zero. That's the temperature at which atoms "freeze" and electrons stop their quantum phasing around their protons. Your average freezer reaches maybe +10 Fahrenheit. Space temperature is 0 Kelvin or -273.15 Centigrade or -459.67 Fahrenheit. That's mighty cold!

Realistically, however, the gushing atmosphere that propelled him out of the station would have protected him for the 1.75 seconds he spends EV.

Better Archer than Trip!

OMG! I loved this ep, and the thing about Data also had me saying 'Yes'.

The thing with Trip and T'Pol was incredibly painful for me to watch. But I do understand it. And I agree on the whole Elizabeth and Darcy thing. The angst is there.

Finally, what did y'all think of the preveiw for next week, personally it scared me.

Hey just to let everyone in Hawaii know ENT is on KIKU Fri @ 4pm. I think they picked the network up from KGMB9. btw: KIKU is ch 4 on cable and ch 20 antenna (yes, i still live in the stoneage of no digital, it sucks, i know)

Heeeeeerrrrrreeeee's DATA!!!!!!!!!!! at least Data in TNG

did anybody else notice that quick costume change t'pol did from eggplant purple to salmon pink then to shimmering teal?

it felt like Star Wars Episode 1, don't blink you'll miss a costume

i liked the way trip played cool in their convo esp. the leaning on the wall to talk to archer sooooooo James Dean!!!! yep, shake it off, shake it off

nice mistake too, this is what trip looks like from both angles, heh heh, i snicker with pleasure

QUERY: how was archer able to kill malik with one shot? it took five shots to stun guardi #1 standing post in CS12 last week

I'm new here. Cool site. I just picked up the eps recently and was intrigued by the whole vulcan/human thing. How did that happen and are there still mind melds like in Spock's day?

Newbie here, too. Not watched the Augments as yet, so thank ye kindly for the screencaps :D Glad I found you folks.

Hmm, Trip certainly did everything to "straighten things up", but the scene with Soong shows that he can't help but care for T'Pol and show it.
I wonder how will she react? Encourage or discourage his little "love signs"? Will she even see them? Well, Vulcans are supposed to be sensitive to emotions, aren't they?

Damn... how are they going to get out of this whole mess?... I just hope this whole talk wasn't a way to make viewers accept situation's finality .

NOOOOOOOO!!!! *takes a mallet and beats Trip with it* IDIOT IDIOT IDIOT!

Stupid Trip, he just had to say that crap to T'Pol, and this whole relationship is the reason why I watch Enterprise.

I hope Koss dies so the two can hurry up and get married before Trip dies.

Oh, Trip dying? Hehe, that might get back at him for what he said, but poor T'Pol wouldn't have anybody to look after of change outfits 7 times per episode for. Hehehehehe...

I wonder if there is coin laundry on the ship. Imagine how much T'Pol would spend in one year. $_$

"She interprets his coldness not just to the marriage, but also to the fact that he never believed they could succeed."

I'm not sure about this conclusion, when it's been Trip, all along, that has tried to convince her there was something between them. I think she feels he has just given up, not that they never had a chance to begin with. Plus he's hurting and you tend to say things you really don't want to when you're hurting, just to keep from showing too much how you feel about the situation.

Gorgeous caps, BTW. Esp. of T'Pol.

Wonder if any of you guys ever been in that spot that you have to talk to the one you're in love with and turned you down for some reason. Impossible to think straight and say anything intelligent. Poor Trip.

When his sister died, T'Pol was there to help him. And now? He thinks he lost her. Who can help him now? Phlox could, beacause he has a degree in psychiatry (as he told us in "A night in sickbay"). But I think Trip wants to go through alone. It's more dramatic! The writers know that with this development of the story we will be waiting for every new episode with impatience. So, let's wait and hope for the best. ;)

Personnaly when Trip was talking about a Human/Vulacn couple I was yelling to the TV: " Don't knock it 'till you've tried it. If Sarek and Amanda can do it, so can you!!!!"

I loved this trilogy, references to the Orion slaves, Botny Bay, Gengis Khan, DATA!!!!, Julian Bashir and Sarek and Amanda totally made my day.

The "vulcan civil war" will probably show Trip that Vulcans and Humans aren't that different after all. Besides he basically told her mother that he didn't want her to feel any more guilty then she probably already was, that hasn't changed. I have a candle burning for them. I shall not lose hope ^_~

Btw, the caps are wonderful

Hurting Trip needs to distance himself. The 'I'm still in love with T'Pol' Trip said it all when he told her he was proud of what she did, even though it was hard to watch. T'Pol seemed to melt in front of his eyes when he said that. And I agree, she is at a loss concerning what to do now. She knows next to nothing about relationships, let alone how to deal in this one that's now even more complicated. I have this weird feeling that the way Trip is acting could somehow spur T'Pol to obsess over him. And, whereas formerly, he was usually the one paying her more interest, it'll be T'Pol's turn to hang on his every word, look or expression. He still has it for her, but T'Pol is gonna have it worse...well that's my take. If Trip looks elsewhere for love, oh, brother, it could get even messier.

Thx for the pics! I just watched the episode myself. It kind stunk that Trip and T'Pol is no longer, but I liked the way they closed it. Also another favorite scene was when Soong said. 'A little protective of Commander T'Pol, aren't we?' and Trip said 'No. I just don't like you.'

Favorite Archer moment: When Archer was talking to the Klingons and afterwards when Malcolm gave him that funny look. I laughed so hard.

As for the T/TP ship ending...I don't think it has. I saw the previews for next week's ep. and that would be a great time for them to kill of Koss. Also, I predict that T'Pol will intiate a mindmeld with Archer in order to save her soul(in one of the scenes in the preview, it shows T'Pol getting caught in an explosion. I think we'll see her intiate the same little preservation dohickey that Spock did in Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan [at least I think it was Wrath of Khan])

Also, I'd like to give kudos to the producers for Soong's last bit in the episode. The beginning of Data...joy!!!

Congratulations to all the cast and crew of Enterprise for a great start to the season!! Also, T/TP shippers...there is still hope!! Hold on!!!

I didn't catch the reference to Data at the end but i get it now that you guys explained it. Awesome.

I'm glad that Soong is done trying to "improve" humanity. He almost got every killed. Even though he was an unethical scientist, I gotta say I like Brent Spiner as Soong. It reminded me of the doctor from Lost and Space and most recently the new Battlestar Galactica on sci fi channel. Skivvy, questionable characters who you love to hate. Although his arc is over I think it would be cool to see Brent Spiner guest star again at some point. He made me like Soong, even though he was such an evil character. But I guess the real villian ended up being Malik. The guy was ruthless, killed without conscience and willing to die to harm those he considered enemies. That was messed up how he killed his girlfriend. No one deserves that.

Did one of the augments survive? What happened to the one who had no abilities except extraordinart hearing? Did he go with Soong or stay behind with Archer?

I still think we should get rid of Koss, tjeez the guy is starting to irritat me, and I haven't even seen season 4 yet. (oh, dear, what will happen if I do see him, let's find out if my insurance covers a broken tv)

I also think Koss dies during the civel war, at least that will save me the trouble of getting overthere myself and take care of the problem. Saves me time to buy a brand new tv, if he doesn't die, I am afraid my TV will not last very long. I sound like frustrated old made.

When will these two stop hurting each other and admit they love each other? Well picture 10 was great if you were going to name it I think it should be called "Tpol's Pain"! Quite fitting don't you think?

Did you guys notice that T'Pols voice changes quite drasticly at those scenes she talks to Trip alone?
This thing ain't over. ;)

Thank you for summerizing what happened since I missed the ep. I can't believe trip said that to T'Pol. And he's supposed to be the optimistic one! I wish I could have seen it, thank god for reruns! I love pic ten too Mist!

tanx for making the death of malik more clear, i came in on the end of that scene

i hereby declare this THE BEST SITE for any ENT fan!!!!!

so shouldnt our favorite female vulcan have a standard uniform?

it makes all the other kids jealous

cant you see hoshi making a stink about that

"Captain, I think it would only be fair to have an opt out day for ALL the crew. I wanna wear catsuits too!"

Hoshi in a catsuit.
Now there is an idea!

In the next episode there will be Koss. I hope ...................Koss dies
I am very ............bad.
ciao I write from Italy

I want Trip and T'Pol to be together... with my luck it aint gonna happen but I'm crossing my fingers

Hey ho people… woah it’s so lonely being the last one reviewing but oh well here we go.

Loved the screen caps and comments well funny.

I really enjoyed this week’s episode and probably my fav outta the 3 that dealt with the whole Augment situation. Another brilliant performance from Brent Spiner he hasn’t lost his touch after all this time. I’m also super glad that that Leader Augment Malik got killed , talk about mingin but did they really have to put a big hole through is belly? OUCH. You could see right through it lol.

I think this was a good episode for all… even Archer which is very surprising. But especially for both Trip and T’Pol I think they did brilliantly. Trip like you said a pretty good lines through out but I was so glad we finally get to see them working together again. I think that’s what I was waiting for out of all because I find that even from the beginning when they were annoying each other they still managed to not only work together but work brilliantly together. And is also where they have the best conversations so it’s nice to have that back. I also agree she looks a lot better in her blue outfit.

The Trip and T’Pol Scene – brilliant I loved this scene, I really like how dynamics of have changed because I thought it would be the other way round with Trip going after her and T’Pol blowing him off. So I kinda like it this way makes it interesting. I loved the way T’Pol played this one she’s never had trouble saying what she has to say before. I couldn’t believe how much he was ignoring her though…. I was like “what! Don’t you see she wants to talk to you, but he’s just focused on the problem at hand” And I don’t think she likes it, real smooth of her though huh starting out with “How are your parents” but at least this episode cleared up my questions about whether or his are still around and where they are. What a coincidence as well here we are talking bout wondering if his folks are bout and the next episode tells us all we need to know. Anyways it’s nice to know he has got someone about. I also don’t believe that he really meant what he said about them not having a successful relationship…but she did. Makes for interesting developments I think, the coming episodes are bound to be very interesting indeed. I’m even tempted to look…..hehe really but im so not going to. *crosses fingers*

All in all a brilliant ep. I particularly liked the ending when Archer is taking Soong to his cell and he starts thinking about making artificial life forms lol ‘The birth of Data and Lore’ and then he works in “It might take a generation” haha I loved it. Yeah so they defiantly have gotten into my good books with this one loved it can’t wait to see what will come next.

Man I do hope others review as well.

PS: Though i do have another question, i wrote something simular somewhere else on one of the essays about clothing and stuff but i forgot where it was so wanted to ask it here since we were on the subject... T'Pol outfits-

Don't get me wrong i love her outfits and don't think she should change them but technecally she is now starfleet right, so wouldn't that mean she would have to wear are star fleet uniform? Isn't that regulations or something, it just got me wondering. I mean it would probably be a big mistake because it wouldn't be able to show of her...curves as well as the outfits she has. But i just thought it would be regulation or something.

Hey English Choc,

Its kinda inconsistent about the uniforms, but I'm starting to like spotting when she suddenly changes from one to the other. But then I've never been a huge fan of the blue overalls. Watched Star Trek: The Motion Picture last night. How many outfits do they get through? And how many styles?! Mostly styled after pyjamas imho. Anyway...Dr Phlox gets away with it (albeit for the opposite reason, to hide his curves!) so why shouldn't T'Pol?

Keep the faith and stay spoiler-free!

this site is realle great i mean i learnt more about the episodes now then a week ago
