Awakening

Awakening, aired November 26, 2004

Kevin Thomas Riley's review

Another excellent episode! Trip and Soval continue to make this series wonderful. Poor T'Pol! Her scenes with T'Les illustrate what the cracks in Vulcan society are, and T'Les did indeed do all she did for T'Pol.

Trip and T'Pol? Nothing, nada, zilch.

Still, a great episode. I was NOT a fan of season 3 by any stretch of the imagination, so I really appreciate how much thought has gone into trying to truly making a prequel of this series. It is a pity that Trip and T'Pol - one of the reasons this series is still on the air - aren't at least given a nod by Dawson who directed this episode.

Let me just say that if, as someone posted below, Soval is killed off next week, I will be very upset! That would be one of the stupidest things TPTB ever did.

Soval is fired as the Earth ambassador, and convenient evidence fingers Stel (that, it turns out, is the name of Boy Wonder, Security Guard) as the embassy bomber. (Is that an image of the Kir'Shara in the background?)

Asked if he has any further thoughts to share, Soval, that lovely sarcastic bitter old man says "There's a great deal that needs to be said, Excellency, but no one is willing to listen." You rock, Soval!

The injuries to Soval's face are from last episode, from the explosion at the Earth embassy.

T'Pol and Archer meet T'Pau, a very young T'Pau (sans accent) who denies any involvement in the bombing.

Archer is outraged! She killed his friend and 40 others! Humans don't take that kind of treatment sitting down. "No, you traverse vast wastelands based on false information." Whoa! These writers are on top of their game! Nice dig, T'Pau!

T'Les! T'Pau is not pleased T'Les revealed where to find the Syrrannites. Archer and T'Pol relate how Arev helped them through the Forge, and was killed. Turns out Arev was really...wait for it because you will be stunned by the revelation...Syrran, the Syrrannite leader! Surprised, right? Right! No one saw that coming.

Trip is outraged Soval was fired!

Who put that damn V'Las in charge anyway? Vulcans reward merit, and V'Las has a knack for governance, so he was made Big Man on Campus.

What will Soval do now? Weelllll.......he doesn't really want to bring it up at this moment, but he would make a damn fine First Officer to Captain Tucker. We could all pretend this is the Twilight universe and leave T'Pol on the planet to care for Archer, while Enterprise goes off on its own adventures. Trip isn't ready, yet, to give up on his love.

A brief shippy moment confirms Trip is right not to give up on Flakey T'Pol quite yet. Maybe later. But for now, Soval mentions the "T" word and Trip's head snaps around.

OK, I've been pulled back from the shippy brink. Forward with the drama. V'Las is determined to destroy the Syrrannites headquarters. Wouldn't you know that is right where T'Pol and Archer are headed?! What are the chances? That Tucker/Soval Captain/First Officer pairing looks more promising all the time.

Lots of mom/daughter angst over T'Les's choice of friends and philosophy. T'Pol is not pleased - she thought she had raised mom better than that.

Surak and Archer chat. Those 22nd century Vulcans aren't following the right path. Maybe a human can show them the way. (Collective groan from all Trek fans who have absolutely no desire to see the lame, boring Archer show the Vulcans the right path. Haven't these writers ever heard of post-colonial literary theory? Give it a rest - we don't need to see the great white savior of the Vulcans.)

T'Pau taps into the katra of Surak. Yikes! He *is* present in Archer.

Trip wants to know why Soval is helping them.

"I never got the impression you cared that much about humans. Seems like you were always finding something new to complain about."

"I lived on Earth for more than 30 years, Commander. In that time I developed an affinity for your world and its people."

"You did a pretty good job of hiding it."

"Thank you."

Travis calls and has modified the shuttlepod to land on the planet. It won't be a smooth ride. "Just don't tell Malcolm about that part until you are underway," Trip cautions Travis.

T'Pol really isn't sold on this whole katra transferring thing-y. She wants to know if Archer *really* believes he has the spirit of Surak in him. Archer admits it sounds unlikely, but still....

Back on Enterprise, V'Las tells Trip to scram.

We get to see Trip's very annoyed reaction on the very cool Vulcan view screen.

Moments later...that SOB hung up on Trip! The noive!

Archer tries to comfort T'Pol over her mother. "She's joined a violent cult. She's not OK." Archer isn't convinced the Syrrannites were involved with the bombing, which surprises T'Pol. Everyone always expects her mom to be a big disappointment, and really that hair and those clothes and those friends...where is the cool, reserve of the Trellium D prima donna, that model of Vulcan decorum T'Pol has set forth for all to admire?

Captain Trip! In control and quite the wit at the same time. Enterprise has been ordered to leave Vulcan orbit by "Admiral Gardiner." Who the hell is Admiral Gardiner?

Malcolm asks, "Did you tell him about the Captain and T'Pol?"

Trip: "I left that part out."

Soval: "Enterprise was supposed to leave orbit an hour ago. V'Las is not a patient man."

Trip: "There isn't a whole lot he can do about it." Except blow up Enterprise. But really, no one would have expected V'Las to do that.

In the shuttle bay, Trip tells Travis to have a safe journey, retrieve Trip's love (who is still inconviently married and therefore is more of a colleague who happens to be core to Trip's happiness), and no sightseeing along the way. Trip and Soval will recon the satellite to jam (? did I get that right?).

So, can we dump Captain Boring and get Captain Tucker on full time? Archer clearly needs to wander the desert with Surak's katra to keep him company. That is what he is meant to do. And somehow the viewers will muddle through with the funny, sarcastic, thoughtful, engaging Captain Tucker in his stead. Sounds like more than a fair exchange. It is a win/win situation. As long as we don't have to watch Archer wandering the desert and instead get to see the adventures of Enterprise!

T'Pau performs a mind meld to extract Surak's katra. Surak doesn't want to leave Archer - all those 22nd century Vulcans are apparently wacko. Either that or Dawson doesn't know how to direct actors playing Vulcans, so that we get very emotional Vulcans. Probably a combo of wackiness and bad direction.

T'Pau has killed Archer and we *will* get Captain Tucker! No, I spoke too soon. Archer is still alive, and will probably return to the ship as captain. Sigh. (And I do like Archer, I swear, but Trip is a MUCH better captain!)

First Officer Soval tells Captain Tucker the shuttle has six minutes to get through the security grid.

A turbulent ride. Malcolm is space sick.

It isn't turbulence! The Vulcans are...GASP!!!!!...firing on humans! No! V'Las has gone too far.

The shuttle is retuning to the ship - it has been damaged too badly. Trip and Soval realize the VHC must have been monitoring them. Three ships are closing in....

V'Las returns to admonish these annoying humans for hanging around when they aren't wanted. Trip wants to know why the hell V'Las fired on the shuttlepod. Oh, yeah, and Archer and the love of Trip's life (who is married to someone she can't stand because her mom...but that is another story) are really *not* indisposed but are on the planet in search of the wiley Syrrannites.

Soval steps forth and reveals...he helped the humans!

Soval has thrown everything about his life away, and has completely sided with the humans. Kinda like T'Pol did after P'Jem, right? Like father like daughter? Well, we know Soval isn't T'Pol's father, so there goes that little bit of joy myst123 would have loved.

V'Las tells Trip to leave or he will blow up Enterprise. V'Las is a little out of control. T'Pol needs to slip him a little Trellium D, then V'Las will not feel he has to suppress those emotions he feels for...not sure whom. V'Lar? V'Las and V'Lar! A new ship in the making! Folks, this could be *huge*! Does Vulcan have gutter press to spread the speculation? I know mommyJ did the whole gutter press for her video - does mommyJ know something I don't?

V'Las starts firing. Trip asks Soval, "How many warning shots do Vulcans usually fire." "None," Our Man Soval deadpans. Gotta love Soval!

Moments later, Trip to Soval: "Do you think he will do it?"

Ie, will V'Las kill all of us because he is completely wacko and either needs to get laid or get a little Trellium D to take the edge off or he really, really needs to stop reading those pseudo-Surak tracts. Probably the pseudo-Surak tracts are doing the most damage - V'Las somehow thinks they give him permission to kill everyone who doesn't see things the same way he does.

Soval: "V'Las will do whatever it takes to accomplish his goal."

T'Les tell's T'Pol Enterprise is under attack! No!

Vulcans firing on humans? This is really, really wrong.

V'Las says he will destroy Enterprise if they don't withdraw.

Soval recommends they withdraw. "Our deaths won't help Captain Archer...OR T'POL" (emphasis Soval's, not mine). Guess which part of that statement convinced Trip to leave?!

Archer, the Born Again Vulcan, discovers Surak's artifact, the Kir'Shara.

T'Les dies! No! She admits she is proud of T'Pol, and did what she did for her daughter. T'Pol doesn't understand. "You will," promises T'Les. Yes! A mother's legacy?

There have been injuries as a result of V'Las's attack. Soval Knows Trip is concerned about Archer and T'Pol.

Well, no, he really isn't. They've survived other incidents. Very odd how Trip had no concern, after the angst we saw when he sent Travis to get T'Pol off that damn planet in Image #a30 above. This kind of inconsistency within an episode is so disconcerting.

The truth emerges! Why did the Vulcans frame the Syrrannites? You are NOT going to believe this. The Syrrannites are pacifists, which means they would actively oppose some of the VHC plalns for the .... Andorians! Yes, the VHC plans to attack the Andorians!

Attack them? Why? Well, our brilliant Intelligence tells us they are developing Weapons of Mass Destruction, based upon the Xindi model. Therefore, the Andorians must be destroyed.

Trip can't believe Soval buys that. Soval thinks V'Las has an agenda and has persuaded the VHC to launch a pre-emptive strike. No questions asked.

That means an interstellar war. Yes, Soval agrees, one which will be devastating to Andorian and Vulcan, and which could even affect Earth.

Trip orders Enterprise to Andoria.

A whole mess of folks have made comments

Great caps, as always! I really liked this episode, but I'm mad that they killed off T'Pol's mom. She was one of my favorite extra characters they've had on since the series started. GRRRR...I hope they have a great Trip/T'Pol scene at the end of the three eps to make up for it.

Polly, you slut. Keep your hands to yourself, or preferrably (not spelt rite) on Trip!

hey give the girl a break. her mama said she always had a hard time with her emotions.

besides her takin' care of the cap'n shows she has heart, look at it this way: she knew trip would be sad if he lost his friend.

so she's REALLY lookin' out for our boy's emotional well being

okay so like no one else gave thought to how some might be confused w/naming a secondary character so closely to a lead? t'pau/t'pol

it's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's super trip!

here he comes to save the day!!!

All rite, a break has been given. I did feel sorry for her when her ma died. I guess now she has even more potential to get closer to trip after losing a family member and all. But still don't you think even in The Forge she was a little too nurturing to the Cpt?

good silent cry at the end

he is soooo dastardly handsome when he's taking command

i was just informed that dastardly means "in a cowardly, mean, sneaky manner" so i didn't mean it. he's dashingly handsome when he's in command

Were is T'Pols father? (dad) Its a shame T'Pol mum is dead! the show does not air in Australia so this site is the only way I have to knowing whats going on,wish I could watch the show.Count yourselves lucky to be able to watch the show. This is a top (great) site thanks heaps (alot) it is certainly better than having sweet F.A. (fuck all) which means 'nothing at all' and at the moment its making me feel sad but bugger thats life.Have a top day people and be thankfull you have the show,Hoo-roo. P.S:struth youre times are weird its 5:32pm on a sunday here it makes me laugh to see the time it says Iam on,surpose thats what fans have in commom the world over our hummor,Hoo-roo.

Trip on the big screen, gotta love that. Poor T'Pol, bye bye Mummy. At least this gives T'Pol an out to her marriage to Koss, his parents are probably strict Vulcans and might dump T'Pol in favour of a less volatile mate. Can't wait to seenext week! Keep up the great work as always!

Just curious... does T'Pau have an accent?

Guess what, Soval did make himself comfortable on Enterprise, sitting on T'Pol's station and all, don't you think?
Now that would be funny if we had two resident Vulcans onboard. Imagine all the bickering between them! :-)

look at cap a48. then go and watch search for spock, i think its the same thing that spock did to bones when his "body was in death". anyway good episode can't wait to see the next.

This episode was amazing.

T'Pol crying for her mom and the last episode for Joanna Cassidy. She really played an excellent role.
But it sort puts a whole different perspective on things. T'Pol marrying Koss for the sake of her mom but it turned out nasty. I'd say Koss is about to get his last paycheck for this season.
I'd only hope that T'Pol is doing the job herself as in a good shakesperian play. My lirpa goes deeper than my love for the. Exit stage right. And she'll need some comforting from you guess who......

Soval being even a more softie than before. Gosh those Vulcans are so gullible. Except for the ebil HC or course. V'Los being particulary nasty. And quite stunning to see that Surak died due to radiation poisoning. Clearly a link to our world that the danger of nuclear weapons still remains a great threat to humanity.

A little tip for those who aren't US. You might use Google together with the last episodes names and torrent added. Just comes in handy if you forgot to put on your VCR.

Wow, I haven't seen it yet but it looks great. I can't believe they killed Polly's mom! I really liked her too. At least she will go down in our collective memory as a likeable Vulcan. Speaking of likeable Vulcan's is anyone else really liking this new and improved Soval. I love him to death now. But howed those cuts on his ears get there? I can't wait for the rerun. Damn those who keep me from tv on fridays

Go Captain Trip! This looks really great. Can't wait to see it. Love how Trip and Soval work together....kudos to CT and GG.

A good ep. and great pics. I think T'Pol's mom dying was the only way to keep the tension and keep Tu/T guessing. At least she has a chance with him now. Since her mom's gone she doesn't have to stay married to @$$...ahem...I mean Koss.

And I have to agree...Trip makes a cute, lovable Captain.

Oh and cool on the Trip/Soval friendship forming. But I'll bet Coto wants to add more drama so he'll have Soval die at the end of the 3-part arc.

Also, about the whole T'Pol nuturing Archer...she's his friend and she cares for him. What she does is not just for Trip but for her.

And last but not least (just in case I haven't said it enough already ;) ) Archer is so lovable with a Vulcan personality!!!!!

One last note before I go...check out www.fanfiction.com under Michelle Russ for a fanfic following this three part arc. It's a Tu/T feature and it talks about T'Pol's mom's death and Trip comes to comfort her...and maybe more. It should be up within the next couple of days and hopefully the House of Tucker will publish it to their site too so you can read it here.

This was another great episode! Too bad T'pol's mother died. But, in reality, she was the source of all the emotional termoil inflicted upon T'Pol of late. Her intentions may have been good, but the end result has been misery for her daughter. Look next week for the end of Koss, and for Soval to return to THC after the demise of V'los.

Well, I happen to like this Archer a whole lot more than I like any past Archer. And I'm with MR: "Archer is so lovable with a Vulcan personality!"

Um... TP'D... T'Pau came first, actually. See the original Trek episode "Amok Time" (I think that's the one, anyway".

I love this episode. Even without T/T. Second time I've said that and I haven't been struck by lightning.

Yet.

OMG!!! LOL That was very funny myst. :-))))

There Vulcans what did you expect do you remember T'Pel from another star Trek.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Beyond the point T'Pol awwwwwwww her mum's dead how sad I still don't understand how the women did that for T'Pol? Vulcan against Andoria Vulcans should win I'm sorry but Vulcans rule, but now think about it Trip and T'Pol will have more in commom maybe he can give her some neuropressure *hint hint*

Is it just me or do half the old Vulcan guys have the same wig -- i mean, same style, same EXACT color, and all that? What's up with that?

forgive my ignorance. i thought star wars was more fun than star trek when i was little. i wasnt really into the og trek. just mostly familiar w/TNG and on.

so no, i didnt notice any of the weird similarities vulcans have w/ the other treks. the only vulcan i was familiar w/ was tuvok from VYG. and of course spock, but that was only casually like any pop culture junkie, so thanx for the info

i really do enjoy this site, you get to make sarcastic remarks, find fellow trekkies who are more obsessed than you and sometimes, you even learn a thing or two

rock on ;)

WAUW

Soval can't be Administrator if he's dead, right? And if he's not administrator he can't annul T'Pol's marriage, no? Also, only Soval can embrace the "root of all reasoning" on behalf of all Vulcans. Won't Archer be relieved! The dork.

Anyway. T'Pau scores bigtime on the cute'o'meter.

Another terrific episode. Wait until the next one! Our Soval finds himself in real trouble!

Syranites don't have the same hair its all shaggy like dogs.

I've gotta say, I'm loving Soval this season. I sure as heck wouldn't say 'no' to his becoming more of a regular. (Hey, it happened all the time on Voyager, didn't it?)

As for T'Pau...Eeeee! I /love/ seeing her as a very young woman, because she's so very different from the T'Pau we saw in the original Star Trek.

Y'know, it's only now that I realize that we've /never/ seen or heard much about Vulcan in all the years of Star Trek. Enterprise is really the only series that gets us up close and personal with Earth's closest allies. A HUGE thank you to the writers for finally shining a light on Vulcan and its people!

well if you think about it ENT is a prequel, so TP'D is right, from a certain point of view

does WAUW mean "what are u whacked?" or does it just mean "wow"

Koss only married t'pol to find out more about the Syrrannite. His familie is somewhat powerfull on vulcan and they don't want to lose it. T'pol only married him because she wanted to protect her mother, and I think T'les let her get married thinking T'Pol would be protected against the backlash of her joining the Syrrannites. I think Surak would be better of joining T'Pol, she has panaar, so no Vulcan could ever get Surak out of her without dying him of herself, and 2 she is mostly on the enterprise so far away from Vulcan, this also saves Archer from riding in on his high and might white horse, wich I hope they will not do, since I really hate it, the Vulcan are so much more cultivated then the humans, they just have a small bump in the road and now the humans come in and thell them how to live, no way, please don't let that happen. That sucks

I am not english, so wauw means WOW, tjeez I didn't know you write that differently. Sometimes I feel very confused just like t'pol with the english language, at specially when trip starts talking slang. To let you get introduced to my language, I'll write you a small sentence
That send chivers up my spine means in my language
De rillingen lopen over mijn rug.
PS the dutch language is considerd one of the most difficult if not the most difficult languages in the world.

Vulcan buildings are cool, very Star Wars-ish. And they're huge too, I already noticed a part of them around the Earth Embassy (which was already a lot bigger than I expected), and those rounded buildings seemed to be all over the place. Really cool we got to see the capital city for a change, I was hoping Vulcan had something more than just small houses on top of vulcanoes.

I think the vulcans are going to lose their control over starfleet after this arc, and starfleet being able to put more pressure on the (new?) VHC. Hopefully a more mutual alliance will emerge, instead of the VHC telling starfleet what they can and cannot do all the time.

Diane, I don't think TP'D was attacking your english, but merely wondering what wauw stood for. :-) I'm a fellow dutchie btw.

myst - re A30 - I think the line was "We've got a reconn (as in reconnaissance (sp?)) satellite to jam"
appreciate the caps as always
I'm chosing to believe Trip is in fact worried about T'Pol and Archer at the end, but perhaps is still keeping things in check in front of Soval...I thought the line was a bit out of character, too...
:o)

Voice of Power was rite, didnt mean to offend in any way Diane, jus wanted to know what it meant

peace, live long and prosper

btw mandarin chinese and korean are also some of the hardest lang. to learn, not to mention klingon k'plah (or however it is you spell it)

so i'm kinda confused w/ all the acronyms, what is TPTB and btw?
on another note: did you guys notice how vlas was a little too emotional (zealot/genocidal like) for a vulcan? very illogical
long live the rebellion

All the Vulcans were a bit too emotional in this episode, including the Syrranites, I say blame it on the director.

BTW, BTW = By The Way

TPTB=The Powers That Be

I think Trip is so HOT,when he is charge of Enterprise.

He just seems so powerful, like he doesn't give a s**t who he tells off.

I loved it when he stood up to the head of the VHC guy.

So more cheeseheads here?
Potverdikkie.

I've read some nice T&T info but won't post it here since it will spoil all the fun. Just a few more days till episode 3 of the arc.

Wow, Connor Trinneer just has the CUTEST grin of any guy, anywhere!! You just can't help but smile when you see it. Thud! (and she falls off her chair, again)

LAC = Lusting After Connor! :)

Oh yeah. I'm very definitely LAC.

BTW, I don't think that that's an image of the Kir'Shara in the background of that first pic, but of Mount Seleya.

Maybye T'Pol ditches Koss, or he gets killed, and then Enterprise some how gets stranded after getting between the vulcans and the andorians and our favorite couple REJOICES! Yeah, I like that.

Damn the VHC. I was a bit mad a T'Les for not thinking clearly, bringing her daughter and Archer (hahahahah, maybe not, hmmmm...) down into the Forge, and causing mayhem to come, but I gotta admit, I did like her. Hey, she's not the smartest vulcan to be heard of, but she's T'Pol's mommy.

Commander Tucker and First Officer Soval! Me likes that! Yeah, let Archer lead that one vulcan left through the desert. Trip is certainly better.

Well I dug this ep too, even with it's lack of T/T. But as I've been reviewing the end of season 3 - and now seeing season 4 - it seems this horrid theme of Archer being the saviour of the universe (ugh) is continuing. The guy doesn't need a bigger head as far as I'm concerned. Does a good captain really going romping around on missions to the middle of BFN and leave his ship in critical situations without it's Captain? Its a good thing Trip ROCKS THE UNIVERSE, or Enterprise would be toast. I definitely think he is a better captain than Archer.

Anyhoo, it looks like OMT will get to do some universe-saving of his own this week so I'm happy. And Tim thanks for the delish T/T teaser... I hope its good!

(P.S. can I join the LAC club?)

i'm slowly picking up on this lingo thing, let me guess...OMT= Our Man Trip?

ps. to TPTB which make this site: i love it!!! you have now been officially added to my fav. list
:) one happy customer

I see forshadowing with Sovel sitting in the science officer's chair. Who's with me? We want soval! we want soval! Imagine it, Captian Trip, Commander T'Pol and subcommander/science officer Soval! The perfect three! (well almost)

Char, OMT is indeed Our Man Trip. Welcome to the club. :D

Jenn, I totally agree with you. Just because I like Archer's character again (did for a while back in S1 and early S2) doesn't mean I like Super!Archer(tm).

TP'D I wasn't in any way offended, so none taken, and I didn't mean to sound harsh, but sometimes I type faster english then my mind can make up the sentences, and greatings to my fellow dutch audiance overhere.

An I the only one who thinks T'Pol has many similarities of face with Soval, enough to be his daughter?

LOL, Sessy! Haven't you noticed "Soval's Annex" on this site? I thought Soval was T'Pol's father since Cease Fire! One of my biggest disappointments this season is that he isn't. What a waste. They made a great father and daughter!

http://triptpolers.houseoftucker.com/soval/

Umm didn't you two watch the home episode? Her mom said her dad died. Remember so he can't be her father......

ANyways my turn and still i find myself liking this episode. Still am annoyed with the amounth of 'to be continued' as they done it again. I mean can't they have an episode that ended on the episode they never had as many ' to be continued' before i donno something tells me they are rushing things and trying to put more in before the end...

No Trip and T'pol moments so i am getting a bit antsy but still i liked this ep. To bad bout T'Les though she was nice, i didn't think they'd kill her so soon, now T'Pol has no one.....except Trip. They better get some alone time soon cos if they don't thats just not fair.

Um i also liked Soval in this i have always liked they way he was. And i did think he secretly liked humans as well. Though is is just me or does anyone else think Mick Jagger when ever they see him? Hehehe seriously he looks alot like him....but without the massive mouth. Am i the only one?

I also liked the little bit between Trip and Soval When Trip asked him why he was doing all of this. "Trip wants to know why Soval is helping them.
"I never got the impression you cared that much about humans. Seems like you were always finding something new to complain about."
"I lived on Earth for more than 30 years, Commander. In that time I developed an affinity for your world and its people."
"You did a pretty good job of hiding it."
"Thank you."

The guy nearly smiled lol. Yeah so i still liked it but they need to pump up the trip/t'pol action now n quit with the so many 'to be continueds'

Till next week

English Chocolate, I know we found out in Home that Soval isn't T'Pol's father. As I wrote in my post, I was very disappointed to find out Soval isn't T'Pol's father.

There are lots of mini-arcs this season.

Well, T'Les DID say T'Pol's father was dead. But, even though Vulcans NEVER lie, (unless it is logical to do so), she might mean "He is dead to me because he went off to do his own thing and I got stuck here raising this kid alone." Or she might say "His being dead is our cover story because first he was a clandestine government agent undermining Andorian colonies, and then he made himself an assassination target as a
pain-in-the-ass ambassador holding Earth's technology back. He doesn't want his mate and child to suffer for it." Besides, T'Pol looks like his kid to me. Gotta love that Soval!

WOW you'll have to love this episode isn't great i really love soval in this (HE ROCKS)
