Cease Fire

Cease Fire, aired February 12, 2003

Bring the pink skin to help negotiate with the Vulcans

Travelling with the injectors at 110%. Trip doesn't like it.

T'Pol tells him they are rated at 120%.

Trip informs her his underwear is flame-retardant, but it doesn't mean he wants to set himself on fire. T'Pol and Archer exchange a glance. Trip seems in the mood to pick a fight.

We'll be fine, Archer tells Trip.

Trip isn't happy with T'Pol.

The planet the Andorians and the Vulcans are fighting over is uninhabitable. Why fight, Trip asks?

The Androrians terra-formed the planet, developed an atmosphere, and settled it. It was logical for the Vulcans to believe a military base was being established.

Evidence? asks Trip?
Would you need evidence if the Klingons settled Pluto?, responds T'Pol.

Not the same thing, Trip retorts. (Anyone know why it isn't the same thing?)

Archer: What happened to the colonists?
T'Pol: They were removed.
Trip: By force.

The Andorians left the High Command little choice. (T'Pol is gritting her teeth at this point. What is wrong with Trip?)

Trip is still in a bad mood. He almost burns up the warp reactor rushing to the Vulcans and they make Enterprise wait.

We don't need your help, humans.
OK, we'll leave, Vulcans.
Well, maybe, while your here, you can talk with the Andorians.

But you must take this Vulcan with you.
No, I'll take the Vulcan I trust.

In Sick Bay with Phlox, Archer ponders on humanity's role in space, wondering if humans are ready to join and participate in a much larger community. He decides he will do that, whether the Vulcans like it or not.

Archer tells T'Pol he is going to wing the meeting with the Andorians once he determines the lay of the land.

Archer agrees to bring the Vulcans to meet with the Androrians.

The Vulcans aren't pleased, but agree.

Trip isn't pleased, either.

The shuttlepod is fired upon and crash lands.

T'Pol is annoyed with Soval for keeping his past history on the planet from her.

Trip in command has Hoshi search for Archer. The Vulcans want to mount a rescue, which Trip worries means guns blazing and casualties which may include the Captain. Three Andorian ships are on the way to provide their people with assistance. Things are getting tense.

Archer runs off to do something, making the final remark that his ears are less likely to get in trouble. Soval asks why humans are so obsessed with Vulcan ears and T'Pol tells him she thinks humans are envious.

T'Pol and Soval have a chat about why she stays with the humans and what she has given up career wise to stay. She is urged to return to the High Command, but refuses. She is accused of two emotions: gratification with her current work and arrogance. She informs Soval that just because she respects Archer doesn't mean she has been contaminated by his emotions. T'Pol doesn't lie, so who has been contaminating her with emotions? Trip, perhaps?

Meanwhile, back on Enterprise, things are getting more tense. Trip tells Reed to go to tactical alert.

Soval is wounded and T'Pol tends to him.

Trip orders Travis to put Enterprise between the Andorian and Vulcan ships.

The Andorian behind the attack on the shuttlepod and working against peace with the Vulcans.

Enterprise trying to keep peace in a more short term manner.

Commander Tucker here.

Leave, both the Andorians and Vulcans tell him, or Enterprise will be in the middle of our fight.

Why don't the two of you let the Captain and Soval do their jobs instead of starting a war up here?

Archer reveals the traitor.

T'Pol sticks protectively by Soval's side. A bit worried about Dad?

Trip is relieved to hear from Archer and sends Travis down to pick him up from the planet.

A toast to a compromise.

A toast.

Shran: He likes you!
Archer: I wouldn't count on that.

A whole mess of folks have made comments

Great pics. About the question of why the Klingons setting up on Pluto is NOT the same as the Andorians on Weyhahn (?sp) - I wondered about that myself. I guess the only answer I have is that Earth is not 'at war' with the klingons (at least not yet), but the vulcans and andorians have been at it for over a long time.

I love the little summing up captions. Great shots.
I think maybe the Pluto thing implies that the planet in dispute isn't actually in the Vulcans home system

I'm not sure what was up with Trip during that entire scene. It wasn't his usual good-natured jibing at the Vulcan. Maybe he was just trying to point out that what T'Pol knows of the Andorians is what she was taught, and that may be a bit ethnocentric for her to see the whole picture. That she's not seeing both sides of the story.

I dunno...I'll have to rewatch.

Maybe T'n'T haven't gotten into it with each other for a while, and they're trying to re-capture old times. I kind of liked the sparring.

Sue...

didnt chris write singularity??

pookha hasn't seen the ep yet because it was pre-empted, but she did email me an idea about what Trip meant about the Klingons, which I think sounds right:

"i dont think it has been established that the
andorians are interested in conquest like the
klingons.

it also has not been established that the andorains go
around raiding settlements ect..

what was on the colonial world .. military bases or
farms
actually i wouldnt even bother terra forming a planet
just ment for military usage.

the andorians we learned have a reason not to trust
the vulcans.
and trip learned then that the vulcans cant always be
trusted and just because t'pol was told and maybe
beliefs something doesnt make it the truth.
ie she was totally caught off guard by p'jem being the
cover for a spy base.

maybe trip cant believe that t'pol would just sit
there and parrot the vulcan party line about the
disputed planet. even after what happened at p'jem."

Yes, Sue, the sparring did hark back to the early days, but, to me, Trip seemed out of sorts rather than jibing T'Pol to get a rise out of her. I sensed something going on beneath the surface - Trip may just have been in a bad mood, or he may have been aggravated that T'Pol was spouting Vulcan party line when he knew she didn't really believe it anymore. Trip and T'Pol continue to provide the human/Vulcan perspectives/dialog.

I want to add to my observation from earlier: though Trip was challenging T'Pol, she accepted it quite well. As I've noticed she usually does with him. She doesn't really get snarky at him like she does with Archer. She seemed almost reticent to recite what she knew of the Andorian/Vulcan conflict. Perhaps T'Pol knows that she's being one-sided about it.

Again, they make each other think outside their own boxes. Both about serious issues and the good-natured jibing. I'm glad there's at least one writer on staff who doesn't mind exploring that dynamic.

stub, good points! But didn't you think T'Pol wanted to smack Trip for his probing questions? She was having a conversation, Captain's Table approved, and Trip was making her face unpleasant truths. Trip broke the rules in this Captain's Table, and she was not pleased.

What do you think?

I think she was displeased with his line of questioning because it made her expand her thinking. Trip never got a chance to question her in AI or SoJ, and now he has her cornered. He took advantage of it. And I didn't see Archer putting a stop to it, either. One more Vulcan brick was dislodged. If anything, I can see T'Pol's respect for the good ol' engineer going up a notch. She just looked guilty to me, and while Trip looked smug, there was also a *hint* of sympathy for her bred ignorance.

If any of that makes sense...

oh i want to see this episode soo bad.

One thing that myst captured is the look that T'pol gives trip when he is in a mood and she is concerned about him.

You see it in singularity among other places.
It is a very well "open " look .

As much as I enjoyed the gentle teasng of Shockwave and Marauders they have been though so much they may need a good arguement to clear the air between the two.

And Chris is so good at snarky trip.

Watching the parting shot again of T'Pol looking as if she is gloweirng at Trip, I'd have to agree with Stub. He was hitting close to the mark with his challenging her perspective on the 'sensitive' Andorian/Vulcan situation. When Trip 'dislodges a brick' with her, it does serve to challenge what she has been groomed to accept without question all of her life. And, 'si,' she does look a bit guility...'uh, oh...why is he sounding so logical right now?'

I guess it all comes under the heading of her viewing her work aboard Enterprise as gratifying. Uh, oh...darn those human emotions rubbing off

I see something different in that T'Pol picture. I think she her feelings were hurt just a little. She seemed to have a 'I've been so nice to you and then you do this' kind of look on her face.

There seemed to be a brief moment there in the conversation where she was struggling with something inside of her. If that's the case then Tucker's big mouth may have destroyed whatever understanding has been keeping them from fighting lately.

I say, expect more sniping.

i loved Trip in the captain's chair - the shot with Enterprise holding ev'rybody off is so good! i love Trip in command. as for Trip+T'Pol, i hope the sniping does continue/return - they're so good at it ;)

I thought Trip was getting downwright hostile in his questioning. Maybe he was concerned about his engines - but not concerned enough to stay in engineering and have a meal brought to him. Instead he takes it out on T'pol. And since when would Trip not like to push the envelope to see what the ship can do. Trip has been shown to have a poor sense of when to keep his big mouth shut (screaming at Soval in Shockwave pt2 for instance) but perhaps he's so relaxed around T'pol he thinks he can say anything.

I must stress however that ANY sniping is better than none.

I hope they have an episode where Trip's mouth gets him in hot water (calling a argumentative Tellarite a 'pig' perhaps, who doesn't like to be called a 'food animal') and T'pol has pull his bacon (pun intended) out of the fire.

Treknut, I think Trip has come a long way regarding T'Pol. He hasn't really seen her in the Vulcan light for quite some time until Cease Fire. I think he's been able to see her as T'Pol and not The Vulcan. They've been getting along, T'Pol has been fraternizing with them, telling stories, drinking wine, etc. Now suddenly she's back to displaying the characteristics that he grew up despising...the Vulcan superiority is shining through here. They've all seen what happened at P'Jem, yet here sits T'Pol reciting more Vulcan crap. I guess I can't really blame him for getting pissy.

The thing is Stub T'pol has broadened her horizons since joining Enterprise - has Trip ?. Has Trip tried some Vulcan food or learn to speak Vulcan or even asked to learn some meditation techniques ? Not so far. T'pol has fraternized with the crew (probably going to movie nights), drunk alcohol and stood up against her High command to support the Enterprises mission. Has trip embraced any other cultures ? (sleeping with alien bitch queens dont count). Trip's first encounter with a Andorian saw a gun showed in his face and watching his Captain and best friend being beaten. Also there was an implied threat of rape against T'pol. I just can't understand how he automatically disputes everything T'pol says about the conflict with the Andorians.
If Trip still despises Vulcans so much well then theres no hope for T/T relationship in the near future - T'pol will always be a Vulcan. Sure she's changed alot but she's still a child of Surak.

What gets me going is the implied superiority of humans. Vulcans are not humans with pointy ears - they have evolved on a different planet. They differ from us mentally, physically and socially yet no allowance is made for this. Beacuse of the Vulcan first contact earth rebuilt itself in 100 years to a utopia without war, povert and disease. Sure we (in Star Trek history) did it but you can be sure the Vulcans helped alot.

It seems Archers and Trip's biggest gripe with the Vulcans is that they held us back somehow. How did they do this ? Just cause one FTL ship is launched the Vulcans should of given us all the technical knowledge we wanted ? Please ! they owe us nothing, in Trek history post WW3 atomic horror courts where still ongoing.
Any sane race on seeing this would of been very reluctant to give technology. We are led to believe that 100 years of good behaviour, less than half a Vulcan lifespan, means we are worthy to recieve all the support from the Vulcans we want.

I am just tired of seeing Vulcans in a negative light thats all.
I just see Archer becoming closer & closer to T'pol while Trip seems stuck in neutral and I dont like it one bit.

I did enjoy Cease Fire greatly though. More episodes like it please - can see the Federation starting to become a thought.

Ps hope i'm not ranting or bashing - never really posted on BB's before.

Hey, everyone's opinions count, Treknut. I guess I'm not as into the Vulcan stuff as you are, so I'll refrain from making any generalizations about them. I don't really have a problem with them.

As for Trip broadening his horizons, I think he totally has. The changes he's seen in his life are seemingly more subtle than what we see with T'Pol. Trip is more cautious now; he doesn't lash out at T'Pol like he used to and because of his tolerance (and maybe even affection) for her, he's got more patience with other Vulcans he meets. Learning to deal with T'Pol (and probably Phlox, too) has helped him greatly deal with other species they're running into. By taking command WITH her, he's learning more about it. He's got command presence, that's for sure.

Just because Trip isn't learning how to meditate, that we know of, or that he doesn't eat plomeek broth doesn't mean he's not embracing other cultures. Who knows what T'Pol and Phlox are teaching him? We're only given a little insight every week into the lives of these people.

As for the first Andorian incident, yeah their first meeting wasn't exactly a warm welcome. But at the same time, Trip also saw what the Vulcans were hiding and perhaps felt the Andorians were justified. At his and the Captain's expense. They're second meeting with Shran was much better, comparitively speaking. Shran was willing to help based on the events of their first meeting. Both times the Vulcans were to blame, for lack of a better term.

So I can understand Trip's behavior in Cease Fire with T'Pol. Without coming right out and telling her that maybe the Vulcans aren't *always* right, he's making her come to that conclusion on her own. I think that signifies a certain respect he has for her...allowing her some dignity.

Did any of that make any sense?? I'm so tired right now. Gah.

Well here it is.. I think Trip and Jon were justified in sitting there wondering who the heck was this T'pol

I know for sure if one of my friends started spouting some nonsense that they believed at one time and had personally seen it wasnt true (say a discussion about race or religion) and then all of a sudden regressed and started out spouting the stuff I and who ever else would challenge them to why they believed this ...

This wasnt the T'pol who saw that the Vulcan monks and officials were lying through their teeth about the truth of P'jem..
or the T'pol who stood with them in shockwave.
This almost sounded like the T'pol of broken bow.

I think both Trip and Jon were startled by some of her statements..
especially the only logical reason for the andorians to terra form the planet was for military means.

I am suprised that Trip didnt look at her and go really.

Yeah the first meeting didnt go well between the terrans and the andorians but once Shran saw that Jon was his own person that changed everything.

Trip knows first hand if it hadnt been for Shran feeling like out of a sense of honor that he owed Jon a favor that both Jon and T'pol would have died on Coridian.

The Vulcans there showed just how dangerous their arrogance was..

And remember these are not the Vulcans yet of TOS..
even some of the Vulcans know they have lost their way from the time of Surak.

The young doctor who comes to the aid of T'pol confirms this.
That things are worse now then they have been in a thousand years and I dont think he was just talking about the vulcan reaction to the disease.

I have a theory that goes like this..
for one thing just the shear stress of being responsible for so many new civiliazations is taking their toll on the vulcans.

Like t'pol said in silent enemy there are more new species gaining warp flight then ever before.
That things are more dangerous now then any other time since the Vulcans went into space.

Also I wouldnt be suprised if in the back ground the Romulans have been affecting Vulcan society for their own ends.

And why do we see a sea change from the Vulcans to Entrprise the the Vulcans of Tos..

Well for one thing the Vulcans of TOs time were never the perfect fantasies so many seem to remember..
remember Tpring and some of the not so perfect vulcans we saw even in the time of tng..

But mostly I think the founding of the federation and not being alone in the galaxy in the position of being guides for the emerging races will allow them to go back to the roots of the teaching of surak.

That they are about to undergo a shift .. a major
paradigm-shift in their way of thinking.

You see it partly in T'pol , in the young doctor that helped her in Stigma and also to a degree in V'lar.

And back to the dinner table ..
I dont see where people are getting that trip was belliigerent.

I think he was being at first curious, then questioning and then skeptical. and at times a little confused. Especially when she said the only logical reason for the andorians to terra form a planet was for military purpoes.

And he didnt out and out attack her statement .. he just asked about the evidence.

And remember in the past when Trip has made statements that she found questionable she has questioned him and asked him why he believed what he did.

So very much of what he was trying to do was doing what first his science teacher and she had taught him to do..

trying to get her to challenge her preconceptions..

Yeah he seemed tense and tired but not snarky .

A couple more things..
no he doesnt like to see the engines driven to the breaking point..
they established that in Fallen Hero (please tell me you want us to slow down)
He knows that it will be he and his engineering crew that will face sleepless days fixing the mess and there are no nearbye starbases to help them either.

Yeah he doenst mind pushing them some but not to the point where you can hear them actually whine under the stress and the vibration through the ship is so great it is making his tea glass vibrate.

And also it looks like they made up later in the episode.
As Jon, T'pol and Soval are leaving Trip is talking to Jon about a conversation he had with T'pol.

It sounded as if she had been briefing him about the history of the different peace talks ect .
He told Jon that she told him about a territorial compromise that had taken eight years to work out.

some interesting dialog from Fallen Hero...
it might make you look at the captains table in Cease Fire in a slightly different way..

You are just speaking your mind like you as you always have..

Your questions were quite presumptuous coming from one so young..

Your bluntness made me reconsider some of my positions..

V'lar to T'pol describing an encounter she had with a younger T'pol.
