E2
E2, aired 5/5/04
The probe couldn't be stopped. Seven
million dead. Everything is happening as it happened before.
The only thing to do is to find Jonathan
Archer.
 T'Pol is meditating. The
comm chimes and someone enters. She swallows hard and slowly turns her
head towards the person approaching.
It's Trip, unable to sleep, his insomnia's come
back. Man, does he rush to explain his presence! Has he been practicing
what he is going to say to T'Pol before the mirror, trying to get the
words just right?
T'Pol cuts to the chase. He's there for his NP fix.
Trip reminds her it has been weeks since their last session and they've
all been under a lot of stress lately.
T'Pol wants to discontinue the NP sessions because he's grown quite
skill at the postures she has shown him. A puzzled Trip asks why and she
tells him she has taught him all she can. He reminds her she told him it
takes years to master and he isn't that quick a study. (Oh, years it is,
Trip? Hmm, how long do you plan to have these NP sessions?)
T'Pol snaps at him that she has taught him all
she can.
 Trip changes tactics.
Look, he tells her...
 ...I'm
sleeping fine. (The natural Trip is back - no longer sounds like he is
reciting a prepared script.) I didn't come for NP, I came because I'm
worried about you.
Worried?
"You've been keeping to yourself a lot lately, even more than usual.
You spend every free moment in your quarters. You even asked Chef to bring
your meals her." (And we just thought T'Pol was keeping a close eye on
Trip in Harbinger! What does he do, follow her around wringing his hands?
Whew, at least she is still eating!)
"The Mess Hall's heavily damaged, where do you
suggest I eat." (Hmm, T'Pol, where did you eat last week with Trip? Wasn't
that the Mess Hall?)
Now Trip cuts to the chase. "Come on, you gotta admit you've been avoid
me ever since the two of us...You know, when we..."
 "Had sexual relations."
"Wow, that's real romantic when you put it that
way." Oh, Trip, poor guy! He is a romantic and their tryst/one night
stand/brief encounter/whatever did mean more to him than he lets on. Or
maybe he is just teasing her gently.
"I told you, what happened was an exploration.
not the prelude to an intimate relationship."
 "I never said I wanted a
relationship."
 "Neither did I." OK,
either T'Pol is prevaricating to protect herself, or she is telling the
truth and she only wanted to experience human sexuality and chose Trip
because she thought that he was the type of man who went from one woman to
another without consequences. Is she a user or in denial?

 Quite
the exchange of looks. Trip stares her down after her last statement and
she glances away. She is prevaricating.
"You helped me get through a rough patch and
I'm grateful. I just stopped by to see if I could return the favor.
"
 "I appreciate your concern. But
I'm fine."
 Trip gives her one last
long look, nods his head, sighs and leaves.
Enterprise is off to meet Degra. The crew has
to get through a subspace corridor. To get to it they have to go through a
nebula with at least 6 Kovaalan ships guarding it.
 Malcolm, the tactical guy extraordinaire,
recommends they enter at a point above the layer of metreon gas, which
should reflect our engine signature, create multiple sensor ghosts, false
readings, and hopefully confuse the aliens about which one to shoot
at.
 Hmm, another Enterprise enters
the picture just before they enter the nebula.
 Reverse course immediately!
Lorian, Captain of the Enterprise, and Karyn
Archer, First Officer, come aboard Enterprise. Lorian suggests they meet
with T'Pol in the Conference Room. (Those wacky yet lovable unknown aliens
are always welcome and allowed on the ship within seconds of being
encounted! Even in the midst of getting to an important meeting to save
the world.)
 Lorian explains they
can't take the ship into the subspace corridor because Enterprise will be
thrown back in time 117 years. How does he know? It has already happened
and that he is there to make sure history doesn't repeat
itself.
 The Kovaalans attacked
Enterprise as soon as it entered the nebula (drat, that means Malcolm's
plan didn't work!). The crew made it to the corridor and got through it in
only a few seconds, travelling 11.6 light years. But the stars were off
and Venus was in retrograde (or whatever).
T'Pol looks like she is under a strobe light, so that we know this is
an alternate universe - nothing like good old visual clues to keep you on
track!
Enterprise was in the right place, but over 100 years early. The theory
is that the impulse wake destabilized the corridor, causing it to shift in
time. (That was my guess as well.) T'Pol discovered the trip through the
corridor was one way and there was no going back. (Notice all these
references to "trip" and "corridor?" Just an observation.)
OK, so here's the plan. They can't go back to earth because they will
contaminate their own history. So the decision maker decides they will
hang around the Expanse for the next 100 years and maybe they can warn
earth about the Xindi probe or even stop the probe. In the meantime,
they'll mate and have offspring to carry out this mission. This is one
doozy of a plan. Because of its sheer brilliance, it will probably be
written up and taught as standard procedure across the universe. Or maybe
not.
T'Pol is sceptical about the whole
thing. Enterprise doesn't have provisions or fuel for such a long journey.
Hmm, can't they get fuel and provisions?
 "You've hardly changed, Mother."
 I beg your pardon?
"You made alliances with other species, traded
technology for food and supplies. You even acquired a few alien crew
members. We did our best to carry out the mission you gave us" to destroy
the first Xindi probe. Despite years to prepare, they failed to destroy
the probe because they were one ship and no match for the Xindi. (OK,
couldn't the ship have gone back to earth a few years ago and told them
about what would be coming?) But E2 can help E1 make the rendezvous with
Degra and the Council. No need to go through the corridor. Using alien
propulsion technology to modify the injector assembly E1 will be able to
travel at 6.9 and make the meeting without using the subspace corridor.
The hull plating can be modified to compensate for the stress. The
injectors on E2 are too old for these modifications, but practically new
on E1. Realizing the E1 crew are sceptical, Karyn suggests going to Phlox
to confirm the identity of these harbingers from the past/future/present
and then all will be believed.
T'Pol notices immediately that Lorian has human
chromosomes. Phlox gives her an A+ (teacher's pet!) and says the
chromosomes came from his father. "Not possible," T'Pol exclaims! Humans
and Vulcans have never been able to reproduce! Hmm, more nighttime reading
by our favorite Science Officer, in which she examines the possibilites?
Of course, it turns out that Phlox, in his brilliance learns to combine
the Vulcan and human genomes. Who's the father? Why, Commander Tucker, of
course!

Father and son meet in Engineering. Trip tells
Lorian his eyes are just like Trip's dad's. "Now the ears, those, those
are your mother's."
 Lorian smiles
and Trip is surprised. Lorian says his human and Vulcan heritage allow him
to find a balance between emotion and logic. Also, he wasn't raised with
the same inhibitions as most Vulcans.
Lorian learned engineering by reading Trip's
logs. Dry reading, Trip replies, I hope I gave you some hands on training
as well. I'm sure you would have, says Lorian, sadly.
There's something you're not telling me.
You died when I was 14.
What happened?
I'm not sure we should be discussing your future. (What? Why not? You
discuss everything else!)
Must have been hard growing up without the old man around. I'm sorry I
wasn't there.
 You were a good
father. Strange...being able to tell you that.

 T'Pol is
still alive! Or is she? Hard to tell under that incredibly old facade. Why
make her so old? I don't like it - they should have made her look more
like V'Lar. Oh, back to the story.
T'Pol asks about Trip. Trip! She calls him
Trip! She doesn't want to see him - it would be too awkward.
T'Pol would love to reminisce but, you know, the clocks a-ticking. She
gives Archer a PADD to give to the other T'Pol, who will know what it
means.
A very odd scene in which
Hoshi and Travis find out they had children, but Malcolm didn't apparently
find anyone to marry because he doesn't have children. Hoshi and Travis
leave quickly when it becomes apparent this upsets Malcolm and Malcolm,
who decides he doesn't like this future, immediately sets about to get to
change his future. A mean scene towards Malcolm, but I'm glad he isn't
going to not do anything. He realizes if he wants to get married, he has
to change his ways.
 Lorian admits
he dissembled about the risks modifying the ship to go to warp 6 - there
is a 22% chance the ship will be destroyed. T'Pold (I ripped that name off
from someone on another site) has figured out another solution which will
allow the ship to go through the corridor. T'Pol has taken T'Pold's
solution to Trip, who concurs that T'Pold's solution will work.
Aside - why doesn't Trip ask about T'Pold, or to see her? Why no
curiousity about her?
The decision has been made to
go with the two T'Pols' solution. Lorian goes to see T'Pold and chastises
her for talking out of turn, that earth will be destroyed. We hear what is
obviously an old argument between T'Pold and Lorian. She tells him his
human emotions are getting the better of him and he responds she knows
nothing about being human. She tells him she knows guilt can be a powerful
motivator for humans and not to let it cloud his judgment. Hmm, so Lorian
is feeling guilty about something.
Lorian coldly replies, "Maybe you'd be a little more concerned if
Vulcan was in danger and not Earth." Whew! Some serious resentment on the
part of the son.
 It's the Tucker
profile! OK, sorry. Lorian has decided the E2 will steal the injectors
from E1 and go meet with Degra to convince the Xindi not to attack Earth.
Karyn points out that the E1 will be without warp capability, but Lorian
assures her his father an fabricate more. This is what needs to be done,
if Earth is to be saved! Cue dramatic music and cut to commercial.
Oh, my, Trip is totally enjoying
the news that he and T'Pol are parents. He is milking the situation for
all it's worth, but, for a man who didn't want to know his future, he does
seemed please with this scenario.
Trip asks T'Pol if she has talked with Lorian, who is a good kid. T'Pol
says no, she hasn't, and he isn't a kid he is over 100 years old. Trip
laughs and says only in the expanse could he have a kid 3 times his
age.
 "Who would have thought, you
and me, huh? Lorian says we're going to be married in a traditional Vulcan
ceremony. It's gonna take me weeks to learn to pronounce the vows."
"You know where we are going to
have our honeymoon? Cargo Bay Three! He says I'll fill it up with sand
that we dug up from a passing asteroid. I'm even supposed to," he laughs,
"manufacture a palm tree."
 "It's
ridiculous to assume that those events are going to happen. Hand me the
flux coupler."
"Aren't you at all curious about how you and I are supposed to end up
together?"
 "The fact that our
counterparts marry doesn't mean we'll do the same."
"You're afraid to admit that under the right
circumstances, you could have feelings for me. Maybe you have them
already."
 T'Pol: "I should've
known this was a mistake." Trip: "What?" T'Pol: "Exploring human
sexuality with you. You're obviously unable to have a physical relaionship
without developing an emotional attachment."
Trip: "You know, all the other women on board
must have been taken, because I can't imagine any other reason why...
 ...I would've married someone as
stubborn as you."
 "I'll go help
Rostov with the part manifold. You seem to have everything under control."
OK, so do we have the reversal of
traditional gender roles between these two? Trip planning the wedding and
kids, and T'Pol freaking out about commitment and running
scared?
 Lorian steal the
injectors...
 ...and shoots dad in
the process. Trip is rapidly rethinking the whole "Lorian is a good kid
and marriage to T'Pol wouldn't be so bad" idea.
Realizing what Lorian is doing, the E1 fights
back. T'Pol runs to the transporter and beams out some equipment from the
E2. They could steal from each other all day, it seems.
OK, clearly Lorian has trained with one of the
finest strategists ever born. He is going to kill the people on Enterprise
to get to Degra. But if he kills the people on Enterprise, then will he be
around any more, or will he go poof? This time travel does give me a
headache! Fortunately, Lorian surrenders.
In the brig, Lorian says he took the only
logical course. We find out Lorian is wracked with guilt because he had
the opportunity to destroy the probe but didn't because his emotions took
over, he hesitated, and the opportunity to ram E2 into the probe and
destroy it was gone. 7 million people dead as a result. OK, now I
understand why he got so angry at T'Pol when she spoke of his emotions -
he says here he will not let his emotions interfere again. He won't let
earth be destroyed.
 It's tea for
two T'Pols!
 T'Pold and T'Pol
discuss ways to adjust the ships technology to prevent the corridor from
destabilizing again. T'Pol looks at T'Pold uncertainly, not sure what to
make of this old woman.
 Are
you feeling better, T'Pold asks? Have the TD symptoms
diminished?
 T'Pol: To a degree, but
I haven't fully recovered. T'Pold: You'll never fully recover. The
emotions you've accessed will be with you the rest of your life.
You're going to have to learn
to live with them, as I have. There's someone on the ship who can help
you. No, not Phlox...
 ...Trip can
be an outlet for these feelings. "If you'll trust him. The emotions he
stirred in me...
 ...were
powerful...and frightening. I tried to push him away. If Enterprise hadn't
been stranded in the past it's possible I never would've married Trip,.
But I can't imagine what my life would have been like without him."
T'Pol: What do you suggest I
do? T'Pold: There's a human expression. "Follow your heart." T'Pol:
What if my heart doesn't know what it wants? T'Pold: It will, in time.
It will. (T'Pol swallows hard and slightly nods her head.)
Enterprise enters the nebula. E1 and E2 pull a
fast one! They enter as one and split apart. Surprised, the Kovaalans
attacking the ships fall back. But the last torpedo caused damage and Trip
has to shut down the port engine. E1 can't keep up with E2.
E2 has a tractor beam! No more
grapplers!
 The aliens regroup and
start to reattack the ships. E2 starts attacking the aliens. They
slingshot E1 into the corridor and turn on the aliens. The last thing
Lorian says is...
 ..."Tell my
parents that I'll see them soon."
E1 gets through the corridor and are early for
the meeting with Degra, but E2 doesn't make it. A thought is expressed: if
E1 wasn't thrown into the past, then maybe history corrected itself.
If that is true, then why would we remember them [E2]? T'Pol asks.

well I love the episodes of time travel and descendants... hehehe, as for
Lorian and trip, they look like true related family. T'pol herself looked
dead in her agedness... but it worked.
And the emotional track and whiplash of T/Tp finding out about Lorian
it was directed and done well.
Thank ye for the cappies

i did like it that the ceremony was vulcan. which showed that trip

touch with it.
something i suspect current tpol has wondered about and well now
current trip may be looking into it.
just think of the talks they could have as trip asks tpol to help him
understand some of it.
i would like to see screen cap of when archer is talking to lorian in
the brig when lorian talks about the failed attempt to destroy the probe
and archer's reaction to it. because i think that has been something
haunting archer all season could he make that sacrifice if needed and so
far it looks like he would have a very hard time doing so,

Trip comes to T'pol's quarters.
I loved it when Trip rolled his tongue in his cheek, he knew that T'pol

She only confirmed it when she wouldn't look at him.
I was really proud of Trip for not losing his control after she said
that she was fine. He just signed and left.

I loved two things about this episode (well, many more than that, but
mainly these two things):
1.) She called him "Trip." Not "Charles," but the far more intimate
"Trip." Yah. 2.) The ease with which Trip says to Lorian, "But those
ears are definintely your mother's." It seemed completely and utterly
natural for him to speak of T'Pol as the mother of his child.
Excellency. Great caps as usual.

just loved that.
I love how Older T'pol told younger t'pol that Trip would be the one to
help her, "unlock" all of her feelings, it just seemed so funny especially
since elder T'pol spoke so slowly. Good thing she said it too, or we might
not have much shipperage.

if archer did suspect it goes back to one of my earlier theories that
he has seen them growing closer for awhile now. look at carbon creek
sometime he has an almost bemused expression at how they flirt and play

from the first time i saw it i believe the scene in the expanse episode
when jon and trip are talking that jon was tyring to tease trip out of his
glum mood a little when he told trip he thought that trip would be one of
the first people to show tpol to the airlock.
i think trip's glum shake of the head where trip couldnt even think of
a reply spoke volumes to jon just how much tpol has some to mean to
trip.
maybe there was a little disappointment.. maybe a sense of feeling left
out when jon asks the question but i think it is the kind when two close
friends get married to each other and you wonder how much you will be left
out of their lives.
but i dont know about jealousy since there wasnt any sign of it at all
when he went to see old tpol. he seemed to be pleased when she asked
about trip..glad that their relationship and trip had ment something to
her.

it would be interesting to see what would happen if trip left t'pol
alone. would she start coming to his quarters now and again?

Loved this eppie! Did anyone else think that the actor who played
Lorian was a great choice? He really looked amazingly like Trip (but
older, and half-vulcan, and a little weathered).

Well as ever i am the last to review since we just got the episode last
night. And by god wasn't it a cracker. I saw some of the pictures on here
but i never realled read to see what was going on (didn't want to spoil it
all) so i didn't know the older las was T'pol. I kinda figured it was.
When i read the summary for the ep i figured the other ship would some how
be enterprise just didn't know the circomstances.
Now that i have finally seen it i'm very glad i did. It was a great
episode. I liked the whole concept of them getting into that situation and
meeting some of their "older" children. WoW Strange things sure like
happening to the enterprise. Who would have thought someone could have
children and meet them when they are even older then you. LOL mind twister
that one. But very cool.
I liked the scene between T'pol n Trip when they are talkin bout their
kid :) i like the emotions that played across her face. And i'm glad they
won't compeletely go away. She can learn to smile finally :)
It's also nice to see Trip be happy for a bit. The sister thing hit him
hard obviously but im glad now he is finally letting himself feel ok
again.
I also liked when they were fighting the aliens and the two ships were
under neither each other. And then they seperated. Very cool stratergy.
All in all a very good episode. I do hope they keep up the good
episodes for the next season cos this season VERY GOOD.

Great Pictures as always! FYI David Andrews played Lorian and he's a
very good actor. Some of us remember him from a movie in 1987 called
Cherry 2000 and also from a tv show in 1992 called Mann & Machine.
Just a little trivia. I'd like to see more of him in Star Trek. Great
character.

I am sure that after T'Pold told T'Pol to follow her heart, she threw
in one final very important piece of advice: "MOISTURIZE!" Then maybe her
skin won't look so brutal in 100 years.
