The Expanse

The Expanse, aired May 21, 2003

Read zealousgirl's Early Edition The Expanse report posted in Miscellany!

A small alien vessel directs a laser beam at earth and cuts a swath from central Florida to Venezuela, leaving devastation in its wake.

Archer calls his officers together to give them the news about the attack and deaths of perhaps a million people.

Enterprise has been recalled to earth.

Trip asks if Archer knows where in Florida the attack happened because his younger sister lives there.

T'Pol comes to report what Soval said about the attack, but she doesn't know which part of Florida was hit either. She looks with concern at Trip, who is visibly upset. Before she can speak to him, the three are called to the bridge.

Suliban take Archer from Enterprise to meet with a shadowy figure - Future Guy - who tells Archer the aliens, the Xindi, who attacked earth are from the future and did so to prevent earth from attacking their home world in 400 years.

T'Pol again states that time travel is impossible. Archer gets more than a little annoyed with hearing her spout the Vulcan party line on the subject.

Klingons attack Enterprise to take Archer back to Kronos to face his punishment. Three Starfleet ships come to Enterprise's rescue and welcome the crew back although the circumstances are hard.

The crew sees the damage to earth.

Future Guy gave Archer coordinates where to find the Xindi. Although Soval is skeptical about time travel, the coordinates are in a part of space called the "Delphic Expanse," the outer space version of the Bermuda Triangle. People go in, but don't come out or come back inside-out.

Archer proves to Soval and Forrest that the ship which caused the devastation has parts which are quantum dated in the future. Forrest agrees to talk with Starfleet again to see if Archer can pursue the clue given by Future Guy.

Trip and Malcolm go to Trip's home town to view the canyon caused by the laser beam.

The two men are tiny in comparison to the scar in the earth.

Archer and Forrest view the Starfleet ships and discuss Enterprise's mission to the Dephic Expanse. Archer is taking on more muscle, and is confident all be a few of his crew will go with him. And, even though Future Guy didn't tell Archer anything about the Xindi weapons, Archer knows FG wouldn't send Enterprise on a wild goose chase. Does anyone else think that Archer is a little too trusting of Future Guy?

T'Pol and Phlox discuss whether they should remain on board or not. Phlox tells T'Pol he is staying out of loyalty to Archer (hmm, good thing he said that because I would never have guessed that would be a reason to motivate anyone!) and urges T'Pol to follow her own desires rather than those of the Vulcan High Command.

Trip and Malcolm have been viewing the new torpedoes. Upon leaving the Armory, Malcolm tries to get Trip to talk about his sister and his grief. Trip lashes out at Malcolm, saying 7 million people died and that the death of Elizabeth means no more than the death of any of the others.

Malcolm tries to get Trip to say he is sad about his sister's death, but Trip won't. Instead he accuses Malcolm of being obsessed with memorials and snaps angrily that, if Malcolm wants to help, to make sure those torpedoes do the job and kill the bastards who did this.

Daddy urges his baby to return safely home to Vulcan, away from those humans who have contaminated her with their emotions. T'Pol wants to go with Enterprise. Soval pulls the VHC trump card and tells her no way will she keep her job if she goes.

Trip and Archer are drinking. Trip, oh so casually, asks if Archer has picked a new science officer. No, he is told. You're gonna miss her, aren't you, Trip asks Archer.

Trip, that smooth-tongued devil, says that T'Pol does grow on ya. Wow, think he might be a little interested?

Further proof of his devotion - he says "nah" and gives a short shake of his head when Archer says he thought Trip would be the first to show T'Pol the air lock. Oh, be still my heart! ::fans self::

However, Trip wants none of that T'Pol crap influencing their decisions when they catch up with the Xendi - Trip wants them dead, dead, dead.

I hope this isn't the Trip we get from now on, that the writers will again be able to write humor for Trip in the midst of tragedy. The actor can carry the humor off without distracting from the tragedy.

Enterprise is under attack AGAIN!!! Another trend I hope is shortlived. How many times do we have to see the ship being shot at?

T'Pol visits Archer to ask to remain on Enterprise. Another heart stopping T/T moment! She has grown used to the smell of humans and, get this, she has grown accustomed to the emotions she is bombarded with every day...

...somewhat! Oh, T'Pol, who continues to shake your Vulcan control and get his emotions to affect you? Trip, perhaps? Oh, yeah!

Time travel may be possible, but following the time line of this episode was impossible. I think it is now seven weeks later than some point in time, but when I'm not sure. Enteprise and its crew have reach the Expanse.

The rim of purple clouds surrounding the Expanse. I do love that color of purple!

Another minute T/T moment sneaks in. T'Pol detects something which Trip says is probably the communications buoy he has launched...

...and she responds "not unless you launched three of them." Now, how logical is that, to take time to make a crack like that when unknown alien vessels are approaching? And does she ever make remarks like that to anyone else? No, only for her man - Trip and T'Pol have their own brand of communication. And observe the almost playful way she turns and looks at Trip when she responds. ::sigh!::

OK, Enterprise is under attack by the Klingons AGAIN!!!

Trip tells Archer not to go to full impulse because the engines are having a hard enough time as it is. Archer repeats the command to go to full impulse.

Travis does a back flip with Enterprise, comes up behind the Klingon ship and Malcolm blows it away with the new torpedoes.

Now that the pesky Klingons are dead, Enterprise enters the Expanse and Archer says "let's see what's in there."

THE END...until next season!

An OK episode. I found it very mechanical and disjointed. There was too much action and not enough reflection allowed. We didn't get to see Trip's angst except for one brief moment (did Archer ever even acknowedge, on screen, his sorrow about Trip's sister?) and T'Pol's decision to stay on board wasn't really explained.

As always, a big THANKS! to zealousgirl for her marvelous, helpful Early Edition reports.

emily, here are two more images from T'Pol's talk with Soval. Are these what you wanted?

OK, emily, is this the image you wanted of the door? If not, you have to tell me which door you mean because I'm confused! :^)

artemis moonshine

am

glad you had a great vacation!

and great pics as always!!

p.s. is there ANY way you could get a few more pics of tpol and soval outside (and that door they went through) :)

Thanks, emily and artemis! I went to New York City for a few days - it was a lot of fun.

glad you enjoyed your vacation, but they fought tyhe damn KLINGONS not the vulcans!!! oh and great pix from the crack line she says to trip!
artemis moonshine

Sigh - why do I keep writing Vulcans instead of Klingons? This is the second episode I've done that. Hmm, I want more Vulcans and less Klingons, is my suspicion about the slips. I hope I caught all those errors this time. Thanks for letting me know, artemis.

This seams to be very sorta sama of the year of hell episodes from Voyager, the whole time travel/alternative realities type thing.

I don't know, maybe they need new writers with fresh ideas and not do rehashes of the old stories.

Thank you once again for the great pics, myst! I saw the scene between Archer and Trip and the bourbon as a definite T/T promising moment but then I tend to view all episodes with T/T colored glasses! :-) My fingers are crossed for season 3. Thanks again!

THANKS!! yes, tis what i asked for!

and you're welcome!

also, do you have one of the door as they are walking out of the building??

emily, see image above. Is that what you want?

Yay it's here, nice screen caps, how do you do it.
It's good and you even find a little bit of what shippers hope fore :)

WOW that was fast!! and yes!! exactly what i wanted!!

thank you much once again!!

Loved these caps, and the oh so promising Trip and T'Pol moments, as fleeting as they were. I'm keeping my hopes high for them for season 'tres' too! Have a great summer one and all...

best, Sue

Thanks for all the lovely caps. of this season, always a joy.

no problem pointing out the k/v glitch i watched minefield last week and was shocked by how much shippage i missed when i watched it the first time, the shot in sickbay threw out another t/t moment, which i loved. oh have any of you guys heard anything about a hoshi/malcolm pairing happening? the rumours are startin to confuse me.
love the pix and can't wait for next season. oh one more thing where are the season one pix? i was goin through some old data and wanted a few screen caps i can't find for t'pol's vulcan robes i wanted to redesign in honour of my t/t hopes for season three. got any suggestions?
artemis moonshine

artemis,

We didn't start Trip/T'Polers until after season one, so we don't have any images of those eps. We found the pictures we used in the Shippers Guide to Season One from several sites, but these two had the most:

http://www.geocities.com/nx_01enterprise/

http://www.stefanogalli.it/proximacentauri/

It appears that most of the images from the first season have been removed from Stefano Galli's site - he must be working on them because we used his images for the Breaking the Ice section of our Shipper's Guide. Both webmasters of these sites were very kind about giving us permission to use their images on Trip/T'Polers.

emily has a fashion section on her site:

http://www.geocities.com/freeclasscatgirl/trek3_other_outfits.html

Hope these help!

Oh I think it was very shippy that Trip finally admitted to any one but especially Jon that he cared for tpol.

trip even bought the subject of tpol up and then actually said she grows on you...
poor thing..
see how much she means to him just as she is getting ready to leave.

I do think they have a lot to buiild on next year with the two..
some conflict.. friend ship too

i just went back and saw my comments for 7th..
i am pasting this little part

hmmm..

wouldnt be suprised if some time in the future it is pointed out to trip that for some one who has a lot of people confiding in him he doesnt confide in very many people.

there may even be a crisis looming where he will have to.
