Horizon
Horizon, aired April 16, 2003 With apologies to all the other
actors and the A story, this was the first ep this season with any real
Trip and T'Pol interaction, so that has our attention.
Read zealousgirl's Early Edition Horizon report posted in Miscellany!
Is this a 'ship episode or not? Perhaps only time will tell.
In Engineering:
Trip woes T'Pol: "You'll be glad
to hear the thermal scanners are up and running," as are the imaging
relays, sure to give T'Pol a bird's eye view of every volcano on the
planet. He makes sure all is working so she can scan to her hearts
content
 Hmm, what should we do
while the technology is working?
T'Pol: "You can practice your harmonica."
Hmm, is she implying he needs practice or that she doesn't like the
harmonica?
 Trip gives T'Pol a
look which says either *I don't need practice* or *you know you really do
love the harmonica.*
 I know!
Dinner and a movie. I've talked to Chef about doing something
special.
 Every night will be
movie night!
 Trip: I thought
you'd be interested seeing how you liked that Western.
We're going to be showin' the three
greatest horror movies ever made. Frankenstein, ...
 Bride of Frankenstein, and Son
of Frankenstein
 T'Pol
walks right up to Trip and tells him she has no interest in horror movies.
*Doesn't he know the difference between a Western and a horror movie? Do
we always have to do everything his wants to do?*
Trip wants to know how she knows she
doesn't like horror movies if she has never seen one.
T'Pol gives Trip a look. *How many times
have I told you in the past I don't get scared and that horror movies
sound very silly.*
 Trip gives
her a look which says *I forgot. You say you dislike so many things that I
lose track.*
 "You don't have
all of them. Just...come the first night."
*I've heard that before. I know if I go to
the first night you'll badger me until I go to the second and then the
third.*
 "I promise you'll like
it...reanimated lifeforms, science run amok. They're right up your
alley."
 *See, I was thinking
of you when I asked for these films.*
 *Well, maybe.*
*I'm not convinced this isn't really for
you and you are putting a spin on things.*
In Sickbay:
T'Pol tells Phlox she has a
headache because she is being coerced into seeing the film that night.
Well, it turns out Phlox has been invited as well!
T'Pol leaves, but states that she knows
her headache will return and she will be back to see the doctor
afterward.
On the bridge:
T'Pol tells Archer it will 30
hours before they see scans and that the holometric camera still needs to
be calibrated.
 Trip will help!
Hmm, is it T'Pol he wants to help or is it because it is a camera she
needs help with?
 Trip: "So are
you comin' tonight?"
 T'Pol:
"If these sensors are calibrated by then." Trip tells her she better make
up her mind because seats are going fast.
T'Pol has done her research and discovered
Frankenstein is also a piece of literature. Yup, Mary Shelley, wife
of a famous poet. (Hmm, how about "Mary Shelley, a nineteenth century
author who wrote what is considered to be the first work of science
fiction.")
 T'Pol suggests a
dramatic reading instead. Trip is slightly appalled - does she really
expect the crew to sit around listening to someone read to them?
She assures him there is a
chance the audience would appreciate the author's true intent by listening
to her words.

Trip gets the message. T'Pol doesn't want
to go to the movie.
 "You want
to start a book club, go right ahead."
 T'Pol is surprised by his
response.
 Trip assures himself
Archer will be at the movie. And glares at T'Pol over his
shoulder.
 Glares one last time
at T'Pol and gets on the lift. Sounds like Trip isn't going to be at the
dinner because he tells Archer he will save him some popcorn.
T'Pol seems slightly stunned with the
sudden turn of events.
At the movie:
Archer has invited T'Pol to be his "date" and assures her that if she
doesn't like the movie, then that will be the end of the matter.
T'Pol starts to take scans. Archer
casts a worried glance over his shoulder to see if Trip has noticed. He
hasn't. Archer then reminds T'Pol she said she would give the movie a
chance.
 She hears Phlox
talking to Trip, interrupting Trip's enjoyment of the movie.
Suddenly in full movie-goer mode, T'Pol
turns around and tells Phlox the movie can be stopped if it is
interrupting his conversation...
...and grabs a handful of popcorn. She
touched food with her hands! What is that?
In the Captain's Mess (next morning?):
Trip: "No one on Vulcan has ever
heard of a horror movie?"
 She
doesn't understand why humans feel compelled to frighten themselves.
 Gets the heart pumping,
Archer tells her. Cardiovascular activity would be more
efficient.
 Archer reminds her
she never gave them her opinion of the movie and Trip folds his arms on
the table and gets ready to hear what she says.
 Medical inaccuracies is T'Pol's movie
review.
 What did you think of
the story?! Trip demands.
T'Pol stalls a moment by taking a sip of
water and looking at Trip.
 "I
thought the protagonist was interesting."
 "Dr. Frankenstein."
 "No, his creation." From T'Pol's
perspective, this was an individual persecuted by humans because he was
different.
 "That's one way of
lookin' at it."
 T'Pol sees a
similarity between the way humans reacted to the monster and to Vulcans.
She is going to recommend Ambassador Soval watch the film.
 "You're kiddin'."
"I believe it would help Vulcans who have
recently arrived on earth."
*Is she pullin' my leg? Hmm, she needs to
take lessons from Feezal on how to "pull my leg." Think I'll suggest that
to her later. No, maybe not.*
Archer thinks that maybe inviting T'Pol to
movie night wasn't such a great idea. She disagrees and is looking forward
to Bride of Frankenstein, which I believe is about the bride of the
monster, not of Frankenstein, so not sure if Trip is the bride since she
is the monster, or she is Trip's bride because Trip is the creator.
 Trip is skeptical she is
looking forward to any more movies.
Back on the bridge a moment later:
 Lifeforms are being unearthed by
the volcanic eruptions. T'Pol says, to quote Dr. Frankenstein, "it's
alive!"
 Trip is very tired of
T'Pol mocking his movie and moves impatiently.
THE END OF TRIP AND T'POL GO TO THE MOVIES. Not a successful venture by
any means. T'Pol seemed determined to antagonize Trip and his taste in
movies, and more than succeeded. He won't be asking her to the movies
again any time soon.
A whole mess of folks have made comments

Great caps, Myst!
Trip was trying really hard to get her to go, and he seemed
disappointed and frustrated that she didn't enjoy the movie in the same
way that he did. Archer seemed motivated to get her to Movie Night so she
would mingle with the crew and was providing ways to make it easier for
her to do so.
The Captain's mess scene looked to me like a Kirk/Spock/McCoy
interchange.

Great pix! But you missed the CRUX of the episode -- T'Pol's shocked
"Excuse me?" to Archer's suggestion that she be his date... She was having
a BLAST bickering with Trip: she was gonna make him BEG for her to go!
This was her excuse to maintain UST for, oh, two or three movies (methinks
the lady doth protest too much)... and Archer butted in, and stopped the
fun.
Date? I think not! Bickering by OMT & Polly: bring it on!
Stub & Joe, go re-write this thing properly, huh?
:-) Loved it, loved it, loved it! Fun for all!

I loved this episode, I just saw it yesterday. I know the episode was
most about Mayweather, but the chemistry between T/T were wonderful.

nikitee I agree with you up to a certain point,, yes Tpol did
want to see him beg.. or say he would at least save her a seat instead of
you need to come early because the seats fill up quick..
But she teased a little too much on something he has heard to many
complaints about . And without meaning to she really did hurt his
feelings. I think at that point with how he looked and what he said he
was hearing silly non intellectual human.
What Jon id was interesting even if he might not know all his
motivations...
first he just wants her to go to the movies in trying to make
peace.
and the last thing he says to her on the bridge is a way out for both
of them in the future.. if you dont like i never will bring it up
again.
and the next day during breakfast he uses it,.. he says well i think
asking her to the movie was a mistake..
and when he says it he is looking at trip like ok the ball is back in
your court.
It isnt Jon's fault that she comes out and say she cant wait to see
bride of frankenstein..
no she made them both pay in that last scene..
Trip for giving up to early (which stunned Tpol and also left Jon
confused) and Jon for intruding as you said on her fun..
I just hope she sees now there are some things you can tease humans
about and some you cant

Yeah, I agree. Archer only had the balls to ask T'Pol out because Trip
already had coerced her.

The Trip/T'Pol interaction in this episode was like throwing water on a
drowning man; just when you think you can't take anymore, guess what--you
get more, and then some. I thought the same thing when T'Pol snagged some
of the captain's popcorn--she's eating with her hands--is someone going to
tell her, or just let it go? Seemed to me there were layers of innuendo in
this one being tossed between our comely two. Wonder if Trip'll ask her to
the 'Bride of Frankie?'

Great work! I don't know though... I'm guessing Trip will sit down to
watch a flick on some other Movie Night in the near future... and he'll be
surprised when T'Pol takes the seat beside him and offers him some of her
popcorn. ;-)

I thought the whole movie thing was great.. My thoughts on the other
hand were a little differant... ok.. to help make it make a little more
sense, I put it into little, normal not to dating skilled people
terms... Trip wants to go out with polly, he suggests they go have some
coffee, cause he remembered that she liked it last time. But the only
coffee place he knows of she doesn't like, he was lucky enough to have
caught her drinking coffee from the only place she likes coffee
from. SHe wants to go out on this little date too, but REALLY doesn't
want to go to the gross coffee shop. SHe suggests something else, that
they go for Tea prehaps. He takes this as a sign that she doesn't like
him and sadly sulks off. Archer seeing this, notices his little baby)as
in child) T'Pol just accidently blew her chance of a date with the guy
she's had a crush on for like, ever. He feels sorry for her, and trys to
encourage her that everything will be okay. He offers, as a
pathetic(unsuccessful) attempt to make her feel less alienated to go with
her, and even though it will be kinda embarrasing, you can't say no to
Daddy, so she relents, reluctantly.... YAY! So.. yeah.. Poor T'Pol...
and Good Screen caps though VERY funny Looks!! LOLI especcialy like the
one of T'Pol when Trip starts getting the picture, the total shock on her
face was great LOL Thanks for my enjoyment!!!! ~Becky

Why don't T'Pol's boobs look that big in her minty green jammies?
Great caps, myst!! I'm gonna be mulling over all the subtext in this
episode for days to come. Woo! I still think they're each waiting for the
other to say something specific. I'm not sure what T'Pol wants Trip to
say, or why he didn't just flat out ask her to go. But it's clear that
they're still in denial and not ready for the next step. I'm thinking
maybe late season three will have them getting closer. This whole
Earth-In-Peril storyline might take away from any T/T stuff.
Then again, it might add a whole mess of angst to it!
*bouncy*

Thanks everyone, for sharing your insights into this ep. I really
enjoyed reading everything written. nikitee, I thought about that scene
where T'Pol responds to Archer's invitation, but in the end I decided to
concentrate on the way Trip and T'Pol communicate (or don't communicate at
times!).
I think there is a lot to be said for why Trip wasn't able to come
right out and ask her to go to the movie, and why she wanted him to ask
her personally, not simply as one of many others he had probably asked to
go. T'Pol has an image of Trip as a man who easily relates to women, but
doesn't realize he isn't the one who initiates the relationships. Also,
Bucky makes a good point that he was frustrated because she didn't seem to
be willing to go, even though he almost begged her, and then she didn't
enjoy the movie the same way he did. I think he was trying, the best he
could, to share something with her and she didn't cooperate the way he
wanted her to.
Zane, I hope you are right!
Yes, stub, they are still in denial about what they want, and probably
the Vulcan/human element enters the picture.

sounds like a cool ep i can't wait to see it. TPol has to be insane,
Trip asks and she says no,I thought vulcans were logical? A gorgeous guy
asks you to the movies, the correct response should have been "back row
baby and keep yer hands off my popcorn.

I was about to give up on ever seeing any T/T interaction especially
any that just involved them without Archer. I was thrilled with the fact
that they're refocusing on them instead of acting like noting happened in
season one. I agree with nikitee, I think she was makig him beg. I think
myst123 had some really good insights on T'Pol's views on Trip. I'm
really annoyed with Archer and I fear that he does have some intentions
towards T'Pol because he practically ordered her to go to the movies (as
his date). I hope he just wants her to associate with the crew. (This
episode was like Stubadingdong's Movie Series, but not as great because of
the lack of T/T.) I'm really looking forward to seeing more of them in
the next episodes.
