Summary: Baby Elizabeth meets her parents.

A/N: It’s very short folks. Very short.

She lay on her back and gazed up at the dim lights above her. An intense discomfort raged throughout her body. She felt a continuous ache in her stomach and an overall feeling of malaise. The tiny being rolled onto her side and lifted a thumb up to her mouth. She sucked contentedly on the soft skin, momentarily soothed by this small comfort in her otherwise lonely existence.

Life as the child knew it-- up until several days ago-- involved little outside stimulation. There had been no reassuring voices, no gentle hands in the night to calm her, no attachments formed. Her needs of nourishment were met rather impassively after which she was quickly left to fend for herself. She learned of many ways to entertain herself in the hours of solitude. Her and her bed...

The walls around her had many stories to tell. Her tiny eyes would focus on one spot for hours at a time, wondering what it might feel like or even how it would taste. Would the rocks be hard or soft? Would she make a mark on them if she rubbed them? She found herself gaining at least some sense of security from the familiarity of her surroundings.

One day, when the baby was several months old, she was moving about in her makeshift bed and caught sight of a great wonder. She was amazed to discover that she seemed to have control of this object. It was apparently attached to her and she could move it around at will. The baby spread out her fingers and watched her own hand’s motions as if it was the most wondrous thing she’d ever seen. The possibilities seemed endless. What could one do with all of these magical things? Upon a much closer inspection, she decided she wanted to put one of these objects into her mouth. The smaller one on the end of her hand seemed the best choice.

The infant found that sucking on her thumb calmed her. She became very attached to it. It was her company. It was her stimulation. It was her reason to open her eyes every morning. The thumb couldn’t make her warm on a cold night or sing her a lullaby, but it was all she had and it was all she knew…until the strangers came.

There were two new people who came to visit her. She recognized right away that there was something different about them. They weren’t the same as the others. The dark-haired one with the soft voice had held her often. The two took her away from the place that she had come to know as home.

The baby felt a twinge in her tummy. She stared through the clear walls of the isolette and hoped to see their faces once more. Her tiny blue eyes strained to focus as the two walked up to the side of the crib. The taller one with light hair smiled tenderly at her and placed his hand on the glass. He wanted to touch her. His companion stood beside him, looking right into the little girl’s eyes. She heard them making sounds that she didn’t recognize, but enjoyed listening to.

Being of such a young age, the infant had no concept of the fact that she was half-Vulcan and half-Human. She was simply too little to have ever learned that Vulcans didn’t show emotion. She only knew what she felt in that moment.

Baby Elizabeth, as she was now named-- though still unaware of the fact-- looked inquisitively at the object hung on the side of her crib. She observed the two beings in the room with her as intently as a six month old possibly could. For though she was just a baby, she understood right away that they belonged to one another. They belonged to one another. They belonged to her. She belonged to them. It was all that mattered now. Elizabeth felt a sense of comfort and serenity that she hadn’t known before. In their eyes, for the first time in her life, she saw love. And for a brief moment in time, Elizabeth Tucker knew no pain.

A whole mess of folks have made comments

I have to admit I never thought of a Baby Elizabeth POV. Short but powerful. Really liked it. It's a great scene to do a POV on, when Trip and T'Pol are in sickbay at her crib. You captured it really well.

Poor doomed Elizabeth. Interesting POV choice. Thanks for sharing this vignette with us.

Blast it! I read this before you posted it, and it STILL made me cry! Such an original idea, too. You kept me guessing. I didn't figure out who's POV you were gonna use until you sent me the finished story, and you gave me hints for two days beforehand. Very nice.

Fascinating POV. But wait ... this is Bether6074. Where's the NC-17? ;)

Seriously, this was very well written and a POV I wouldn't have ever thought about. Nicely done.

Okay, so now I'm blushing. Honestly though, people who know me in RL would be shocked to know that I'm writing NC-17. Here you folks expect it from me. The beauty of the internet, I guess. But wait...aren't I going to meet a lot of you in a few weeks? Oh boy. :o

Rigil, I've been informed that I should check out your stories and I intend to do that sometime soon.

I suppose the reason that I chose Elizabeth was because, to me, there was still some unfinished business with her. I wanted to be sure--in my head, at least--that she knew she was loved. This challenge gave me the opportunity to do that. It's something that everyone deserves...even fictional infants.

I'll stop now before this becomes longer than the actual story. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Holy shit. I don't think I've ever had such a strong reaction to a story. That was unbelieveably beautiful!!!!

Well done bether... great POV idea and so beautiful. I agree with you, it's good to imagine that Elizabeth new that she was loved.

Bether, this is lovely. It's a comfort to believe that a small child would have felt loved, if only for a little while.

Very sweet, thanks.

Bether I really liked this told from Baby Elizabeth's perspective. well done Pov story.

Great, now I'm going to cry! That's not fair! Sooooooo beautiful, I loved it, and thank you! :*)

Very sweet piece. I would like to see it extended. Too bad there wasn't more scenes with Trip and the baby in the show. I would have loved to see him holding and interacting more with her than from the outside of an isolette. I loved the interaction scenes with T'Pol and the baby. They were precious. T.

Now there is a twinge in the pit of my stomach too! So very sad, but at least you gave her a moment of love. What a clever conception, this POV. And so real - what she could perceive from her limited world.

Gosh, now you have given me an idea to work with another character who has not been heard from yet. I was scared to do it but with this story, you have now given me courage to try.
