Chapter 13

The Other Shoe

************

"Trip, where are you?" The final communication was not from captain to officer but a plea from friend to friend.

Trip fumbled through his repair pack that had fallen at his side with his right hand. I know that I have a communicator here somewhere. Ah, Gotcha!

"Captain, it’s Trip. I’m sort’a in Engineering."

"Trip, what are you doing there? I was told that you evacuated Engineering." Concern laced Archer’s voice.

"Well I wasn’t exactly in... Engineering. I kind of fell back in. Made the final connections to reroute the power matrix for the photon cannons in the jefferies tube. Last hit we took collapsed... collapsed it through the bulkhead in Engineering."

Archer noticed that Trip’s voice sounded halting and breathless. "Trip, what’s going on? What’s the damage report in Engineering?"

"Hard ‘t say Capt’n. Seem to be trapped by girders and debris. Can’t see much of anything."

"For god’s sake, why didn’t you say something sooner? Malcolm, transport Mr. Tucker out of engineering, ASAP.

"Belay that Capt’n." Archer could sense something was terribly wrong from the tone in Trip’s voice."

"Trip?"

"Have you ever seen bugs displayed in a case? My situation is, uh... somethin’ like that. I’m..." How could he put this? "...pinned to the bulkhead by titanium conduit. Transporters weren’t 100% before this. With this stick’n in me, I’d hate to end up in sick bay look’n like Dorothy’s Tin Man."

"We’re coming, Trip. Archer out."

"Bridge to Dr. Phlox."

"Captain. I’m already on my way."

Archer looked around at his bridge crew. Many were already half out of their seats, anticipating his next order. In some ways, Trip seemed to be the heart of this ship - in more ways than just making sure that it held together. "T’Pol, Lt. Reed. You’re with me."
