Chapter 4

“There’s no doubt they haven’t exactly kept to their part of the peace accords,” Archer was saying, as they stepped into the lift, “but you can’t hold the entire Andorian people responsible for the actions of a few people in their government. If you could,” he pointed out, “half the people in this quadrant would be in detention right now, yourself included.”

Despite her best intentions, she found her gaze drawn inexorably to Tucker’s, and she sensed the same reluctance in him as his eyes met hers. She felt her mouth go dry and her stomach clench, and then the moment passed and she replied, “But it is their government we would be negotiating with.”

“No, it isn’t,” Reed interjected, and then looked slightly embarrassed at his interruption. Archer nodded at him, and he stepped over to the door. “It’s Shran we’ll be negotiating with,” he explained, “and he represents the Andorian guard, not the government.”

T’Pol’s eyebrows shot up. “A coup?” she asked, sceptically.

“Let’s just call it a shift of power,” Archer replied. “The Andorian guard does not want this war; and neither do most of the Andorian people. Too many lives have been lost in their struggles with you, with little apparent benefit to anyone but those in power. Believe it or not, the Andorian people apparently do not care who owns a small chunk of rock in the middle of nowhere, or even what it’s called.”

They emerged from the lift and headed towards the shuttle bay. T’Pol found herself walking beside Tucker, and she could feel his discomfort at their proximity, as clearly as if he spoke it. She wished desperately for a moment with him to try to dispel the last words they had exchanged when she left Enterprise two months ago, her frustration so intense it left a metallic taste in her mouth.

Archer, oblivious to the seething undercurrents between the two, turned to Trip for a last word before they boarded T’Pol’s shuttle, which was deliberately of indeterminate origin and registration. “Let’s review the instructions.”

“Maintain radio silence for two days,” Tucker replied, “and then tightbeam communication only, every 12 hours, after that. If things go bad, we stay out of it, to maintain Earth deniability.” He paused, and with a small grin, continued, “But if there’s a way to do it and maintain deniability, I’ll ignore those orders.”

Archer raised an eyebrow sternly, and then allowed a small smile to escape. “Let’s go,” he indicated, and Reed preceded him onto the shuttle. As T’Pol followed, she turned for a last moment to look at Tucker. She said nothing, but he could not ignore the beseeching expression in her eyes, and after a moment, his expression softened and he gave her a small smile.

She knew, then, that there was more he wished he could say. She murmured, “Live long and prosper, Trip.” She then turned and climbed on board, the hatch closing softly behind her. He hated the finality of her last words, and wondered how many times he would have to watch her leave, with this feeling choking his throat, not knowing when or if she would return. He watched from the hangar control room as the shuttle departed, and then murmured, “Goodbye thy’la,” before he closed the bay doors and repressurised the hangar.

awww lovely:) wonder if she heard him.......

The only thing wrong with this chapter is it was too short. This is a great story!! I can't wait to see where it goes.

I can't believe how short this was, just as you started to get into your stride it ended. I do hope your next chapters are longer, this is a great story - too good to be cut up into tiny nibble sized pieces that do nothing to feed the appetite. Can't wait for a bigger bite! Ali D :~)
