“Trip’s going to do what?!” Captain Archer exclaimed.

“It’s the only way, Jon.” Captain Erika Hernandez informed him.

T’Pol looked about as tense as she had ever been. Archer didn’t know what to do, his ship had been a mess since Trip had left and T’Pol had been alternatively moody and withdrawn. All on board missed Trip, Archer thought he missed him the most, but was seriously reconsidering.

“T’Pol, is what he’s proposing even viable?”

“It is very dangerous. There is a high probability he will be killed.” T’Pol’s voice was thick with emotion.

“Cap’n, it’s the only thing I can think of.” Trip’s voice alerted Archer that they were waiting.

Archer glanced up to the viewer and looked at Erika Hernandez and his former chief engineer.

“If I don’t, you’re all dead.” Trip’s glance kept darting to his right, where T’Pol sat.

“Maybe you could instruct Commander Kelby…”

“Ya mean the same guy that can’t figure out how to fix it? Are ya kiddin’ me? I don’t know what the hell’s happened to Starfleet Engineerin’ but he needs to go back to school if ya ask me!”

“Commander!” Captain Hernandez admonished Trip.

Trip shut his mouth and stared at the floor. Trip could feel a heavy weight in his chest; he was struggling to control himself, to control his fear, his anger, his regret. Every time he looked at T‘Pol the feelings intensified. He had transferred from Enterprise to get away from her, to let his broken heart heal. Deep down, he knew it never would. It hadn’t helped anyway. All he did was dream about her, night and day, awake or asleep.

“It is too dangerous.” T’Pol answered solemnly.

“I can’t let ya die, not if there’s somethin’ I can do about it.” Trip’s eyes were on T’Pol’s bent head.

Archer had the distinct impression that Trip was speaking only to T’Pol. He knew Trip valued all of their lives, but apparently, he held one’s above all others.

“All right Trip. Malcolm, meet him in cargo bay 2.”

“Aye sir.”

T’Pol’s eyes were glued to Trip’s on the viewer. Something unspoken seemed to be passing through them. Trip nodded briefly before turning and dashing away.

“We are matching your speed Jon. Commander Tucker should deploy the grappler within a few minutes.” Captain Hernandez informed the Enterprise crew.

Both captains’ were thinking what a dangerous task Trip had committed himself to. He was going to pull himself over to Enterprise along the grappler’s line while in high warp.

“You know, I still don’t know if this is the bravest thing I have ever heard of or the most stupid.” Archer said to Captain Hernandez.

“I think I’ll go with brave.” Erika answered him.

****

“Tucker to Enterprise.”

“Enterprise.” Malcolm answered.

“I’m deployin’ the grappler Malcolm. Hopefully, I’ll get it close to cargo bay 2. Here goes.”

“Dammit. I missed. Tryin’ again.” After Trip’s third attempt, Columbia’s grappler struck Enterprise hull, almost on target.

Malcolm stood in his EV suit; boots magnetized to the deck plating, watching his friend pull himself along the tenuous line between the ships. If the grappler broke loose, Trip would spin off into space.

“How’s it going out there Trip?”

“Just peachy! How the hell do ya think it’s goin’? I musta been outta my mind to do something like this.”

“Love does strange things to a man.”

“Shut up, this isn’t easy ya know!”

What the hell’s wrong with him! I know I’m crazy in love with T’Pol, just as I know she doesn’t give a damn about me, but why’s he got to go and point it all out to me? I though we were friends.

Malcolm watched as Trip laboriously pulled along the tether, he was getting closer; he had covered more than half the distance. Trip’s hand slipped from the tether, but his safety line held.

Up on the bridge, all were quiet watching Commander Tucker’s slow progress. Archer had been watching T’Pol closely, when Trip slipped from the line, she had shot from her chair as if she’d sat on a tack. Her eyes had opened wide, and anyone looking at her could see the naked fear on her face. Realizing what she’d done, T’Pol sat down slowly, embarrassed by her own behavior.

I knew it! I knew it! I knew it! She cares deeply for him, but is too stubborn to admit it.

Malcolm provided updates to Trip’s progress. All hands on Enterprise were tense, hoping their friend would make it across the line safely. Captain Hernandez was also watching his progress with trepidation.

Soon Malcolm reported Trip was in cargo bay 2 safely.

T’Pol closed her eyes in relief and exhaled the breath she hadn’t realized she had been holding.

“T’Pol, why don’t you meet Trip in Engineering? I have a feeling he’s going to need all the help he can get.”

“Understood.”

****

“Aren’t you a sight for sore eyes!” Malcolm thumped Trip’s back repeatedly while embracing him in a bear hug.

“Just temporary, just until I fix my…Enterprise’s engines.” Trip was removing the EV suit and began donning the fresh uniform held out by Malcolm.

“We’ve missed you Trip.”

“Hey, don’t get all mushy on me. Let’s get this ship fixed.”

Trip took off at a jog with Malcolm behind him. “I can’t believe this guy can’t do his job! I can’t go around fixin’ all the ships in Starfleet can I?” Trip joked as they made their way to Engineering.

Trip’s heart skipped a beat when he saw T’Pol waiting for him in front of the doors to Engineering.

Why her? I can’t get her out of my mind! She’s always there. When I sleep, when I’m awake. Of all the people I have run into on this ship, it’s her.

“The captain asked me to lend you any assistance I could offer.” T’Pol informed him.

Focus on the job, not the way she looks in that blue catsuit.

“Let’s get started by gettin’ this thing outta warp.”

Trip worked furiously for the next hour. Commander Kelby, his replacement, hovered around watching until Trip had finally dismissed him. He had huffed off to another part of Engineering, ostensibly to repair something. T’Pol was barely a breath away the entire time. They had always worked well together, despite their butting heads. Trip had to admit, that some of their best ideas, had come from their arguments. But today was different. T’Pol seemed to just understand what he was going to say, what he needed.

“T’Pol can you hand me…”

The spanner he needed was slapped into his hand. Trip was under the console on his back, repairing the last of the damaged circuit panels. T’Pol was crouched between his legs bent over, watching him closely.

Dear god! Why in the hell is she between my legs! She coulda sat to the side, but, no! Right between them. What is she tryin’ to do to me? Torture me? Her hand is right by my nuts, dam nit! She keeps lookin’ at me with those big, beautiful eyes of hers. No! Traitorous body! Why didn’t I tell her I loved her? Cause she doesn’t love you that’s why, get over it, Tucker. I’ll never get over this woman, never. Did she just lick her lips? God, I want to suck on those lips so badly.

Trip could feel his body respond to T’Pol’s presence. He began to think of anything that would prevent his growing erection. He was sure T’Pol’s keen sense of smell would sense his heightened pheromones.

T’Pol leaned forward slightly, prepping the next tool for Trip. She bumped his hip as she handed him the phase decompiler.

How the hell does she know what I need before I even tell her? I don’t understand this. She’s right over my crotch, holy hell!

Despite their predicament, T’Pol had to suppress her amusement. The close proximity of Trip allowed her to pick up his thoughts easily. She could hear all his internal musings; he was running calculations in his head to keep from becoming aroused at her nearness. He did not succeed. T’Pol could both smell and see his arousal. He knew something was unusual. She would have to tell him.

“OK. We’re ready to try and bring the warp core offline.” Trip looked down at T’Pol as she backed away to allow him to stand. Trip walked stiffly over to the comm. panel.

“Engineerin’ to Bridge.”

“Go ahead Trip.”

“I’m ready to try and take the engines offline. We’re gonna have a mighty big blow out of power relays, and the ships’ gonna come to screechin’ halt. Just give me the ready signal.”

“All hands, brace for impact. Trip, on my mark. Mark.”

Trip began the bypassed shutdown routine he had hastily erected. As predicted, the ship came to an abrupt stop, power relays blowing all over the ship.

“What a mess. I’ve been gone two weeks and this is what happens!”

“16 days.” T’Pol corrected him.

“What?”

“You have been gone 16 days, not two weeks.”

“Oh, my mistake!”

“We need to talk.”

“What’s to talk about T’Pol? You made it real clear…”

“So this is the great solution? You jury rig some panels and blow half the ship’s power relays to drop us out of warp?” Commander Kelby had interrupted their conversation.

“Excuse me?” Trip was becoming angry. He had always been something of a hothead, and this man didn’t help matters. “You’d still be at warp if I hadn’t done this! And in another hour, this ship would have been blown to bits! Or didn’t they teach you that at engineering school? How the hell’d you get this position?”

Kelby was bristling at Trip. Ever since he walked on board, it was Commander Tucker this, Commander Tucker that. Trip did this, Trip did that. Trip, Trip, Trip! He hated this man even before he had met him.

“Trip.” T’Pol admonished Trip, trying to reign in his growing anger. T’Pol tired to suffuse Trip’s anger with a sense of calm she sent through their tenuous bond. She watched as he visibly calmed down.

“Putting a leash on your dog, Commander?” Kelby sneered at T’Pol. Trip started to advance towards Kelby, intent on knocking him down. T’Pol did her utmost to calm Trip down, soothing him through the bond, sending reassurance she could handle this herself.

“May I remind you that I am First Officer of this ship? You are dismissed; your services are not needed.” T’Pol spoke coldly and flatly to Enterprise’s new chief engineer. Kelby was at least smart enough to quickly leave her presence.

“He had no right to say that, to speak to you like that.” Trip had turned to T’Pol, searching her face. She was anxious and scared. Trip could feel it as much as he could feel his own emotions. T’Pol knew Trip still cared for her, although he had been deeply hurt by her.

“Archer to Engineering, good work Trip.”

“There’s still a lot of work to do cleaning up this mess here, Cap’n.” Unspoken was the thought that Kelby would be unable to perform the work.

“Now that we’re out of danger, the Columbia has continued the search for Phlox. We’ll join them as soon as we can. Captain Hernandez had offered to let you stay aboard to assist with repairs.” Archer informed him.

“Aye, sir.”

“I will assist you in the repairs.” T’Pol offered.

“What’s goin’ on T’Pol?” Trip asked, stepping close to her.

“We need to talk, privately. Now is not the time. Dinner in my quarters?” T’Pol countered, starting to review the diagnostics of the needed repairs.

“Uh, sure.” Trip was completely confused. T’Pol could feel his apprehension; she would have a difficult time telling him of the bond.

They worked in virtual silence for the next four hours before deciding to quit for the day. The remaining repairs were turned over to the next engineering shift. Trip noted that Commander Kelby never showed back up. Trip’s opinion of him sank even lower. Trip knew he would have returned to duty after the Vulcan had calmed down. Apparently this chief engineer didn’t have the same dedication to duty as he did.

“I’d like to get cleaned up before dinner, if ya don’t mind.”

“Actually, I insist on it. You are fragrant.”

“You don’t exactly smell like a rose either ya know.” Humor danced in his voice as they exited engineering.

****
Trip adjusted the collar to his shirt again. After he left T’Pol he had headed to the quartermaster. He hadn’t brought extra clothing with him. He hadn’t anticipated staying on board, and the quartermaster was more than happy to provide him with everything he needed.

Trip buttoned the top button again on the blue silk shirt. Then he unbuttoned it, splaying open the collar.

She always liked me in blue. Never said it, but her pupils dilated each time I’d wear this color of blue.

Trip finger combed his hair one way, then another.

Aw, what the hell am I doin’? This isn’t a date. She just wants to talk to me. Probably about why I left. Do I tell her?

****

T’Pol paced her quarters nervously. The dinner had been delivered early, as she didn’t want any interruptions. T’Pol sipped at the wine she had already poured, trying to ease her discomfort.

Do I tell him before the meal or after? After, most definitely after. And after some wine. And the pie. Then he will be relaxed, I will tell him after the pie.

The chime to her door ran, making her jump. Outside stood Commander Charles Tucker III, her bonded mate.

“Enter.”

Trip almost tripped over his own feet when he saw T’Pol. She stood before him in a red Triaxian silk shirt and matching pants.

I once teased her about looking good in Triaxian silk, did she remember that? Of course she did, she remembers everything. I was right though; she does look good in it.

“Evenin’. Ya look real nice.”

“Thank you. I remember you once said I’d look good in Triaxian silk.” T’Pol had remembered, and had also heard his thoughts. “Are you hungry?”

“Famished. What did you want to talk about?”

“Why don’t we eat first?” T’Pol said a she removed the plate coverings. Blacked catfish, with vegetables greeted his nose and eyes.

Avoidin’ what she wants to talk about, but…she’s got my favorite foods here. Bet there’s pecan pie under that cloth. If she were any other woman I’d say she’s trying to woo me.

“Sit please. Wine?” At Trip’s nod she poured him a healthy glass of wine and then topped off her own glass.

During dinner they discussed the remaining repairs, how they were going to remove the remaining Klingon sub-routines, and the search for Phlox.

As Trip had predicted pecan pie was under the cloth. They both ate their pieces in silence.

“So…what’d ya wanna talk about?” Trip could feel his chest constrict with fear and apprehension. Fear and apprehension he knew weren’t his.

“What’s goin’ on T’Pol?”

“We’re bonded.” She blurted out.

“We’re what?” Trip exclaimed.

“Bonded.” T’Pol repeated.

“Bonded?” Trip questioned. He was clearly confused.

“Yes bonded.”

“I don’t understand. Weren’t you bonded to Koss?”

“No. It didn’t work, now I know why.”

Trip was feeling fear, anger hurt, and confusion. He had read enough about the bond that the idea scared him. He had stopped reading about Vulcan mating processes when she had pushed him away the last time.

“What does this mean T’Pol?”

“That we are linked mentally and physically.”

“Great! That’s just great! I can’t believe this! So what happens now? I have you roaming about inside my head all the time?” Trip stood and started to pace the room.

T’Pol sighed heavily; she knew this wasn’t going to go well. But she hadn’t anticipated on his anger.

Stubborn, intransigent human.

“Stubborn, I’ll give ya, but we both know I’m not intransigent!”

T’Pol knew she hadn’t spoken out loud. Trip must have heard her thoughts, and hadn’t realized the difference. Until she could explain the bond to him, she would need to redouble her efforts to shield her mind.

“Trip…” T’Pol started.

“I need time to think about this T’Pol.” T’Pol watched as Trip stormed out of her quarters.

Trip trudged down the corridor to his temporary quarters.

I can’t believe it! Bonded! I’m bonded to a woman who doesn’t want me. I knew it’d be hard getting’ over her, hell I left the ship because of her. Now, I’ll never know peace, a woman’s love, have kids. Never!

T’Pol could hear Trip’s thoughts as he stalked back to his quarters. He didn’t understand, he thought she didn’t care. She hadn’t told him how she felt before blurting out about the bond.

I handled that poorly.

T’Pol knew her human mate would need time to calm down before she could approach him again.

****
The next few days, Trip avoided T’Pol as much as possible. Since her duties kept her on the bridge and his skills kept him in engineering, it wasn’t difficult. He made every excuse to not be alone with her. She could still feel his anger radiating from him. She would need to talk to him soon; he needed to remain aboard Enterprise.

The Columbia had located Phlox and retrieved him. They were on their way back now to meet up with Enterprise.

“Captain, may have a word with you, privately?”

“Of course T’Pol.”

Archer led T’Pol to his ready room, unsure of what was to come.

“Commander Tucker must remain aboard Enterprise.”

“He transferred to Columbia.”

“I am aware of that. Perhaps they can take Commander Kelby instead?”

“No need to be nasty T’Pol.” Archer teased. At T’Pol’s stoic face, he continued. “I want him back too. But I think there’s only 1 person in this ship that can convince him to return. Even so, Starfleet would still have to approve the transfer.”

“I believe after I have spoken to Commander Tucker, he will wish to stay.” T’Pol insisted.

“Well you better do it quick. Columbia will be here in a few hours. How are you going to convince him to stay?” Archer felt he knew the answer, but wanted to hear it anyway.

“If he will speak to me rationally, he will wish to stay. Can you begin the transfer order?”

Archer chuckled at her audacity. “I think it would be best to wait for Captain Hernandez to meet up with us and discuss the matter before I steal him back, don’t you think? Again, T’Pol, how are you going to persuade him to stay? Because I believe, he left because of you.”

T’Pol remained silent, uneasy with the conversation. “We have become bonded.” At Archer’s confused look, she explained the Vulcan bond and all that it entailed. “I told him about it a few days ago, but he has been angry with me since then, avoiding me. He believes I do not care for him.”

Archer hadn’t expected that, he was expecting her to declare her feelings for him.

“Is he correct?”

“No.”

“I see. Maybe you should have started with that. Well, he’s down in engineering keeping Commander Kelby angry as hell.”

“I will wait until he has finished the last of the repairs. Then we can converse uninterrupted.”

“Don’t wait too long T’Pol.”

“Yes, Captain.”

*****

The crew of Enterprise welcomed back their doctor with great delight in a hastily put together party held in the mess hall. Phlox was a bit misty eyed to see all the crewmembers warm welcome. Apparently, he had been missed. He was doubly surprised to see Commander Tucker on board. Phlox noticed that Commander Kelby was glaring at the back of Trip’s head.

“I’m so glad you have returned Commander.” Phlox’s warm embrace held Trip Tucker for a few minutes. “I’ve been lonely in sickbay without you around.” Phlox joked. Trip’s injury record was infamous and a running joke on Enterprise.

“This was just temporary. Ya needed a competent engineer to effect repairs.” Trip tossed over his shoulder, aimed at Enterprise’s new chief engineer.

Commander Kelby merely glared back, hatred for Commander Tucker man clearly evident in his eyes. They had butted heads repeatedly over the past few days. Whenever he complained to the first officer about what Trip wanted, she had always backed up Trip. He had heard the rumors of the failed romance, and suspected they were true. Kelby really didn’t care about the doctor, but the captain had wanted all senior staff at his party, so here he stood.

Commander T’Pol came into the mess hall wearing the same red silk shirt she had on a few days ago. Trip felt his heart skip a beat.

She looks so beautiful! She’s headin’ right towards me!

Trip looked around, trying to see if he could flee somewhere. But it seemed like everyone on board suddenly evaporated around him, leaving him alone in the center of the room. Trip saw the 2 captains standing close together, conversing quietly.

“Trip.”

“T’Pol.”

T’Pol closed her eyes, and exhaled sharply. She had tried to talk to him before the rendezvous with Columbia, but he had once again dodged her, saying he reeked and didn’t want to offend everyone at the party. The time was now or never.

“Trip, you must stay aboard Enterprise.”

“Excuse me?”

“It is imperative you stay on board. I have already asked Captain Archer to transfer you back here.”

“Did you now? And just why do you think you have the right to do so? Shouldn’t it be my decision?” Trip was getting angry. He felt betrayed and hurt. He had left Enterprise to get away from T’Pol and all her could do was think about her. Now he knew why, they were bonded. The thought of being bonded to a woman who didn’t want to be with him hurt him deeply. Outwardly it came off as anger.

“Your decision to leave Enterprise in the first place was flawed!” T’Pol answered hotly. She was getting angry herself.

Doesn’t he understand?

The mess hall had fallen into hushed silence as the two argued in front of the crew.

“My decision wasn’t flawed at all! It was logical! Probably the only logical thing I have ever done regarding you!”

“Logical is not a word I would associate with you!” T’Pol shot back. “You told me you didn’t leave Enterprise because of me!”

“I LIED!” Trip shouted in her face.

“THEN WHY DID YOU LEAVE ME?” T’Pol was just as angry. Their hurt, anger, remorse, and frustration were playing off each other. Intensifying what they were feeling.

“BECAUSE I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU!” Trip yelled.

“You love me? Why didn’t you ever tell me?” T’Pol’s voice had dropped to barely a whisper.

“When T’Pol? Before you married Koss? After? After your divorce? Before you dumped me? When, T’Pol? When? A guy can take only so much. Isn’t it enough you’ve crushed my heart under your little booted feet? Do you need to torture me on a daily basis?” Trip’s voice was anguished.

“It is not my wish to torture you. I should have told you how I felt before I told you about the bond.” A quick glance over at Archer, and receiving a reassuring nod, she plunged ahead. “I miss your presence. As annoying as you are, you are important to me. I have come to discover, and as much as I have tried to deny it, that I am in love with you.”

Trip just stared at T’Pol for several moments, not truly believing what he heard. He had dreamt it so many times, had wished to hear those sweet words from her.

It is true, you are my bonded mate. You are my beloved.

Trip heard the words clearly in his mind, just as if she had spoken aloud to him.

T’Pol cautiously placed her fingers lightly on the contact points of Trip’s face. She opened her mind to him so he could see the truth of her words.

“Well, I guess I just lost my engineer.” Erika Hernandez remarked as she watched Commander Tucker gather T’Pol in his arms and kissed her passionately.

Both captains watched as Trip and T’Pol spoke quietly before they quickly turned and hurriedly left the mess hall.

****

T’Pol was vaguely aware that her door was chiming. She was exhausted. She and Trip had spoken long into the night and had made love for hours. Trip was spooned up against her back, his head against hers, his arms encircling her body. She could feel his warm breath on her neck.

T’Pol was stunned to hear Captain Archer march into her quarters and sit down opposite the bed.

“Please, don’t get up.” Archer smiled at T’Pol’s shocked expression. “Well, I thought you would like to know right away, that Trip’s transfer back to Enterprise has been approved, effective immediately. In fact, Malcolm and Hoshi went over to collect Trip’s belongings.”

Trip was staring to rouse from sleep himself. He was completely unaware that Captain Archer was in the room. “Mmmmm…mornin’ baby. Ready for round 6?” He asked as he started to kiss T’Pol’s neck.

“5 times! That’s impressive.”

“Cap’n!” Trip shot up to a sitting position, fully awake now, hearing the captain’s voice. A deep blush started at Trip’s throat and made its way to his ears and face.

“As I was telling T’Pol, your transfer back to Enterprise had been approved, effective immediately. Where do you want your belongings Trip?” Archer had a broad smile on his face. He was pretty sure what the answer would be.

Trip looked down uncertainly at T’Pol, not quite sure what she would say. He knew what he wanted, but wasn’t skilled enough yet to pick up her thoughts to discern what she wanted.

“You can have his belongings brought here Captain.” T’Pol answered for him. “What about Commander Kelby?”

“Columbia has agreed to take him back to Earth for reassignment.” Archer smiled and nodded. “You two can take today off; you both deserve it, and tomorrow will be a big day. Well, carry on you two.”

A whole mess of folks have made comments

"carry on you two"... hehehehehe

That was excellent. I would love to see something like this on the show. Very well done. Thank you.

awsome, I could really see an episode like that

I loved the shouting match at Phlox's welcome back party and the stunned realisation that they really did belong together. As for Archer letting himself into T'Pol's quarters to tell her in person about Trip's transfer back while they were both lying sated after love making, I just LMAO! Priceless, now how about that sequel? Ali D :~)

I love this story !
Please write a sequel .

Oooooh, Trip in blue, T'Pol in red...he came back, quite enough said. A satisfying read.

fantastic, excellent, wow, i love it, wish it comes true, just wonderful.. thank you

;) Ok that was just cruel what T'pol did!
Sitting right between his legs like that, She knew what she was doing the whole time. I gota tell Ya life aint fair. This story was so perfect. This realy could be right out of an episode. Now hows abouts a Sequel "We have a what?"For the spoiler nuts in all of us. ;)

I love how you're carrying on the "what" theme from your previous stories...this was hilarious, and other than Archer walking in on the them, I think the rest of it could absolutely fly. It did here, and it should on the show! Very entertaining. THANKS!

Very enjoyable story! Very believable, except for Archer letting himself in.. he's too much a gentleman, *and* a captain! But heck, it's a fic, and it made me laugh my head off. =P I didn't laugh as hard, though, as when T'Pol teased Trip by crouching between his legs. LOL! Not only was that part funny, but having T'Pol handing him his instruments before he could ask for them made it cute and sweet, just playing off the bond like that.

Also, the thought of switching ships during warp with nothing but an EV suit... can that be done? I mean, that warp factor was stressful on the ship, I can't imagine a person... *shudder* It puts a new spin on things! The story was fast-paced and easy to read. Thank you! ^_^

And here you had me wondering if this was a sequel to "You're What?" How cruel! But it was still awesome! I loved the last part the most though! Trip talking before he realized what was going on was hilarious! And Archer's reaction had me on the floor! Great story!

That was hiLARious! I like the title! :) Sequels are nice, you know. ;)

Great story! Really enjoyed her teasing him with her actions while he was trying to work. Hilarious! Not sure Archer would have walked in on them, though.
Loved the crispness of the dialogue. Really well written. Please write a sequel.

Looked at the picture drawn for the story. Funny. Great story. I agree it calls for a sequel or an epilogue.

I like the bickering and verbal foreplay, good job.

LOL... I was surfing the Oddities site, and whaddaya know? Hey, I recognize that picture! ROFL!

Absolutely fantastic!

HILARIOUS!
