Chapter 1

Archer glanced over at T’Pol. As usual, she sat ramrod straight, staring intently at her screen. Her demander did nothing to hide the beads of perspiration on her forehead, or the unhealthy color of her skin. Her focus, usually so intent was noticeably slipping. She seemed more emotional than he could ever remember. She was making mistakes, and she never made mistakes. Perhaps he should send her to sickbay. She didn’t look well.

Archer wondered for the 100th time, what had happened on Vulcan. After returning to Enterprise, he was surprised to learn Trip had accompanied T’Pol to her home world. Neither one would discuss what happened between them or on the planet. There had been rumors of a romance between the two, and frankly Archer was beginning to wonder if it were true. Gone were the friendly bickering that all had come to associate with Trip and T’Pol. Whenever they worked together now, it was in virtual silence, with long looks filled with sadness. Was it T’Pol acceptance into Starfleet that could have caused this rift? Was it the non-fraternization protocol? Could they be in love? If so, I won’t make an issue of it, he thought. I’m becoming a counselor, he mused to himself. He realized he was letting himself focus too much on the interpersonal relationship of his two senior officers rather than the situation at hand. That situation could wait until later. He made a mental note to speak with Trip about it.

Two weeks into their renewed mission of exploration, they had drifted into an anomaly that resulted in parasites in the warp core. At speeds above 3.5, they wreaked havoc with the engines. Dr. Phlox had determined that they were biological with sentience, and did not approve of simply killing them in order to eliminate them from the engines. To Archer’s surprise, both Trip and T’Pol had agreed. Trip stated he’d seen enough death and loss. Trip had noticed an improvement at certain warp speeds, but could not determine a pattern. They seemed happy to clean the reactors, keeping the engine efficiency up, but only to 3.5. Above that speed and they started to die off. Trip was trying to devise an away for their new friends to survive at higher speeds. He had dubbed them “plasma bugs”. Trip felt that there was some sort of connection between the harmonics of the engines and these bugs, but was unable to determine what just yet.

“Hoshi, any replies to our hails?” Archer asked the quiet communications officer.

Hoshi knew he was referring to their message asking about any information regarding the plasma bugs. “Nothing yet sir” she replied.

“T’Pol, anything on sensors?” Archer looked again at the first officer. “T’Pol?”

“Commander T’Pol!”

“Captain?” T’Pol finally looked up from her console, she looked bewildered. She had not been concentrating on her job she had let her mind drift the last private conversation she had had with Trip.

“We can still be together.” She had stepped close to Trip, silently inviting him to touch. When he did not, she kissed him a passion she never showed before. Trip’s body responded before his brain engaged.

Gripping both her arms, Trip forcibly pushed T’Pol away. “I…I can’t. You’re married now. I want to, please believe me I do, but you’re married. I was brought to respect marriage vows. I know you did this to help your momma, but regardless, you are a married woman. And not to me.”

“”Perhaps you should leave now. Obviously there is no point in you being here.” She had injected as much coldness into her voice as possible, and put up her “Vulcan mask”, as Trip called it. She could tell Trip had been hurt by her statement and tone. He had left her quarters quietly, 18 days ago, they had not been alone together since.

“Anything on sensors?” Archer repeated.

“Sensors?” T’Pol asked. Apparently she hadn’t heard him at all.

“Yes. You were supposed to be scanning for any traces of the plasma bugs as your Chief Engineer has dubbed them.” Archer retorted with a teasing smile on his lips.

“He is not my Chief Engineer. I do not own him.” T’Pol replied hotly.

That was it, Archer knew something was up. “T’Pol, my ready room, if you please.” Without waiting for her reply, Archer stood and strode to his ready room.

T’Pol got up slowly, belatedly realizing how she must have sounded. Embarrassed, she followed the captain off the bridge.

“What’s going on?” Archer demanded as soon as the door closed.

“Captain?” was her only reply.

“Between you and Trip?” Archer prompted.

“There is nothing between Tr.. the Commander and I.” T’Pol desperately hoped that Archer hadn’t heard her begin to use Trip’s nickname. But he had.

“Maybe that’s the problem. I want you to go to sickbay. You don’t look well.” Archer’s stern tone left no doubt in T’Pol’s mind that he would personally escort her there himself.

“I will go as soon as my shift is over.” She answered quietly.

“No, now.” And with that he left her standing alone in his ready room.

“I’m what?” T’Pol asked in a shaken voice.

“I am quite sure you heard me correctly, Commander. You are pregnant.” Phlox couldn’t stop the smile from claiming his face. How exciting, a Human/Vulcan child being conceived, gestated, and being born right here on Enterprise. He could barely contain his excitement over the medical implications of this situation. His excitement was tempered by T’Pol’s reaction. She seemed shocked, scared, and on the verge of tears.

T’Pol sat deathly still, and her pallor concerned the doctor greatly, although he tried not to show it to her. With her Trellium addiction past, and struggling to regain controls over her emotions, he had not taken particular notice of her behavior. He just thought it was part of her rehabilitation.

“Commander Tucker will be quite happy, I am sure, when you tell him this joyous news. Perhaps you should tell him now. If you haven’t already bonded with Commander Tucker, you must do so soon.” Phlox prompted gently.

T’Pol’s reaction was anger fueled by fear, and her dark eyes blazed with fury. “How dare you presume to know who is the father! Did you run a scan? Is it any of your business? ” T’Pol was practically yelling, highly unusual behavior for her.

“My apologies, Commander. No, I did not perform a DNA analysis. I just presumed. Regardless of who the father is, you know that you must bond with him, if you have not already. Observing your current emotional state, I would guess that you have not.” Phlox spoke gently, but coldly to his Vulcan patient.

T’Pol realized her outburst was misguided, she was angry at herself at her situation, not Phlox. “I am sorry for my outburst, you re only trying to help. How did you not detect this sooner?”

“Well, I was scanning you only for the Trellium D residue, not for pregnancy. As you know our time was very brief, in order to preserve your privacy during the many crises we encountered in sickbay, I did not run full diagnostics of you. Had you informed me you were sexually active, I could have performed a more extensive scan. In human females, it can take weeks to detect pregnancy, and their gestation is only 9 months. Vulcan’s gestation cycle is closer to 15 months. Although with a Human/Vulcan child, I am not sure how long the gestation cycle will last. We will just have to wait and see.”” Phlox was patiently waiting for T’Pol to reveal who the father was, although, deep down he was sure he was correct.

“You are indeed correct doctor, Commander Tucker is the father. I will inform him.” She answered quietly.

Trip was intently studying the most recent data from the warp core and the plasma bugs. He did not want to kill the creatures, the engines performed at a much higher efficiency below warp 3.5 with them present. They seemed to “clean” the warp residue out of the core, thus drastically reducing the waste by-products and exponentially increasing engine efficiency. Before the doors to engineering opened, Trip knew who was coming. T’Pol. He could sense her presence so acutely. A quick glance told him she was heading his way.

“Commander, may I speak with you in private?” T’Pol spoke in a low voice.

“Of course. My office?” Trip gestured to his small office, and followed T’Pol, closing the door behind him.

T’Pol stood in the middle of the room, fidgeting. Trip walked past her and leaned on his desk. Trip took in the perspiration on her brow and the color of her skin, she didn’t look well. She looked terrified.

“I have something to tell you.” T’Pol’s eyes darted about the room, looking everywhere except for Trip.

She looked so scared. It was all he could to stop himself from reaching out and capturing her in his arms and hold her until she stopped shaking. But he couldn’t, she was someone else wife. Not his. For whatever reason, she had not told anyone of her marriage. Idly he wondered if she ever would. Instead he forcibly folded his arms across his chest and tried to look relaxed.

“Go ahead, Commander, I’m all ears.” Trip replied with a faint smile.

T’Pol breathed deeply and closed her eyes. Opening them slowly, T’Pol blurted, “I am pregnant.”

Trip felt like he had been hit with a hammer, a big hammer. He felt shock, hurt, and anger. His mind lapsed to the night she returned to Enterprise.

“Thank you for coming to my quarters, Trip. I know what happened on Vulcan wasn’t easy for you. Or for me. I jut wanted you to know that it is a marriage in name only. I do not intend to stay married to him for the rest of my life.”

“I thought ya said a Vulcan marriage was forever.”

“Divorce is very…rare on Vulcan, but it does occur.”

“What are you saying, T’Pol?”

“Don’t give up hope that we can be together, please don’t despair. Wait for me.”

“Months, years? How long?”

“I do not know. Until my mother’s position is secured again. I am certain that once Koss discovers the extent of my illness and what I have done to myself, he will no longer want me as a wife.”

“What do you mean your illness, what you’ve done to yourself? Does this have to do with your lack of emotional control?” She could see the overwhelming concern in his face, his eyes. The time was now to tell him, right or wrong, now was the time.

“Yes.” And with that, came pouring out the Pa'nar Syndrome, the incident with Tolaris, the Seleya, Rajiin, the trellium addiction, her inability to completely control her emotions, and finally admitting she had feelings for him.

Trip had stood in dumbfounded silence while she spoke. Why now, why did she have to tell me this now? Trip closed his eyes, and collected his thoughts before speaking. He was shocked by her revelations, and also warmed that she shared something so private and humiliating. He loved her, and that meant the bad with the good. Her confession bespoke of a complete and intimate trust and in her own way a declaration of love.

“I’ll wait for you.”

“You’re what!” Trip shouted. “You told me this was a marriage in name only! Don’t give up hope! Don’t despair! How? How could you let this happen? To you, to me, to us! Dammit T’Pol!” Trip was furious, his arms gesturing wildly. He was storming about his small office. All hope of any relationship with her dashed.

“You misunderstand.” Fortunately, T’Pol expected Trip’s outburst, he would assume the child was Koss’. Irrational human, always leaping to conclusions. She spoke softly, “I have only ever been with one man. And you know very well who that man is.”

If Trip felt he’d been hit with a hammer before, this was nothing. Water, icy cold water, lots of it. My baby, my baby. She’s pregnant with my baby! Trip had stopped dead in his tracks and could only stare vacantly at T’Pol. She’s pregnant with my baby and married to someone else. What was he going to do now?

T’Pol watched Trip carefully, looking for some sign of acceptance. He had stopped moving and was staring at her with his mouth hanging open, and all color drained from his face, his blue eyes locked with hers. As this continued on for several long moments, T’Pol became more and more concerned. He appeared to be catatonic; he hadn’t blinked, and didn’t appear to be breathing.

“Commander?”

“Mr. Tucker?”

“Trip?”

“Charles?”

T’Pol was worried and stepped closer with each utterance until she was just inches from him.

When T’Pol’s warm breath wafted across Trip’s face, Trip snapped out of his state and stared deeply into T’Pol’s luminous eyes. “You’re pregnant with my baby?” he whispered.

Our baby.” She corrected him quietly. With those two words, hope was re-born in Trip for the first time in 18 days.
