Lament

By Fireheart

Rating G
Disclaimer: I don’t own these wonderful characters. I just wanted something happy before all hell breaks loose.
Genre: Humor/a little romance/”fluff”
Summary: The senior staff has a little fun before they separate

A/N: This is my first fic so if I mess it up or do something wrong I’m terribly sorry. Takes place before “Demons.:
(Please tell me if it sucks.)

“I called you all here today, stated Captain Archer in his best theatrical voice, “in light of our returning to earth for this speech even though tbe populace will probably ignore us entirely.” Light laughter greeted his statement. The senior staff was gathered in the officers’ lounge for a celebratory evening. They were enjoying a bottle of champagne that Chef had produced as the banter went on at the politicians’ expense. The Captain looked around and noticed something was missing.

“Did T’Pol ‘escape’ already?”

Some grins commenced. ”Nah. She said somethin’ about a surprise,” said Trip with a grin on his face. “Personally, I’d like to see what it is.”

“Me too. I speak the language and I didn’t know Vulcan had a word for “surprise.” Everybody chuckled at Hoshi’s sarcasm. The Vulcan they all knew had been one surprise after another. At this moment she walked through the door with two bundles in her arms.

“Well, well, well. Where have you been?” Asked Archer, feigning annoyance.

“Sorry sir, I’ve been saving this for years and thought now would be fitting.”

“Fitting for what Commander?” asked Malcolm, straightening up in his chair from his un-Reed-like sprawl. T’Pol set one package by the door and knelt by the low table and opened the other package, revealing seven glasses and a bottle decorated in what looked like scales that she then opened. Everyone gathered around to see as she poured six glasses of green liquid that she then gestured for them to take. Everybody took one and looked at it.

“Commander what is this?” asked Travis, sounding somewhat apprehensive. “That is 300 year old Vulcan ‘Port’ from my forefathers’ vines.”

“Really?” asked Malcolm who looked at it and took a sip. “Bloody Hell! that’s strong!” he almost yelled coughing slightly as Trip slapped him on the back, grinning. One by one they tasted it, exclaiming at the flavor and each other’s faces. T’Pol sat and watched them as she sipped her drink. Her own spirits glittered with her crewmates’ smiles.
.
They continued to laugh and reminisce late into the night until the Captain stood and proposed a toast. “To days past and days to come,” he said and they all drank to the future.

As they all moved to leave T’Pol knelt to gather the glasses and Trip stayed behind a moment. “Just wonderin,’ T’Pol, but what’s in the other bundle?”

“That’s my harp.”

“You play harp?”

“Yes.”

“Could I hear you play?”

“All right, I’ll play an older Earth song.” She set the cloth with the drinks inside down and unwrapped her harp. It was beautifully carved with stars, planets, and moons. She ran her fingers over the strings and light tones sounded. when she began to play, Trip recognized “Where My Heart Will Take Me.” He sat entranced until the song ended and their eyes met and just stared as if they could see each other’s souls. Both stood after she rewrapped the harp.

“That was beautiful.”

“Thank you Trip.”

He glanced at her, and she wrapped her arms around him for a second before heading towards her quarters, each smiling softly.
