Part One

It had been too long. Nearly two months and he was no closer to finding her now than he was the day those Klingon bastards had taken her. Varen moved the cloak even more over his face as he walked into the bar. Why was it a person always met people with information at bars were the scum of the galaxy normally were? Varen didn’t think he’d ever understand that one.

He looked back at his companion and nodded once. Nolan Reed… his dear friend. When Varen had asked for his help he hadn’t even had to think about it. He had always cared for Jennifer… almost as much as Varen. Nolan and Jennifer had grown up together, just as Varen had grown up with Sorik and T’Sel. They had a bond as brother and sister… much like Varen’s bond with the two Vulcans he’d lived with… the only two who could ever truly understand him… along with his mother of course. “You sure this guy will even be here… it could be a trap like the last time.”

Varen shook his head. “I know this man… he is Sorik’s uncle. I have met him before when I was much younger.”

“This guy is Sorik’s uncle? Good lord… he’s a Vulcan? Oh bloody hell!”

Varen smiled. “You know Nolan… I’m a Vulcan as well.”

“Yeah but your not an annoying Vulcan. All the Vulcan’s I’ve ever known have been mostly annoying, self-righteous jerks.”

“Is that what you think of my mother?”

Nolan’s eyes widened. “Of course not! I forgot about her… I mean she used to be like that if what your father says is true, but she changed! She’s not like that anymore! So it’s just you and your mother that aren’t annoying, self-righteous jerks.”

Varen shook his head. “So only my mother and I are good people? No one else? What about Sorik and T’Sel? Of have you just forgotten about them as well? And what of my grandparents on my mother’s side?”

Nolan rolled his eyes. “Okay fine… but you know what I mean! Besides… your grandfather is kinda a self-righteous jerk.”

Varen exhaled. “You have me there, but not all Vulcans are like that. Soval I’m sure isn’t all that bad either. But experience tells me Soval being a good person is about as likely as you marrying a Vulcan.”

“Hey! I got nothing against you guys… all I said was you’re all jerks!”

Varen chuckled softly for the first time in weeks. Only Nolan could make him laugh. “You really are nothing like your father… are you?”

“I pride myself on that Varen. The day I turn into my father is the day I have to shoot myself! I’d hate to say this but if I were to choose to be like anyone it would be like my mother.”

“Of course you would… she’s totally different from your father. Always joking around, teasing Malcolm and then there’s the fact that she has been known to want to find other ways of getting out of things other than blowing everything up. I don’t know how your father lives with a woman like that.”

Nolan shrugged. “Violence can’t solve everything… though I think my father thinks it does.”

Varen sighed as he moved his eyes around the room looking for the man that held information about Jennifer. “This time it can.”

Nolan moved his hand to Varen’s shoulder. “Not even now Varen. We’ll just have to wait and see. Everything will work out… that’s one thing I know for sure. My father used to tell me when I was little about all the adventures he had on the Enterprise. Spending time with your father on shuttle pod one had always been his favorite. Sometimes things seem hopeless… but that doesn’t mean they are.”

Varen chuckled lightly. “They were stuck in that shuttle pod for a long time… that’s when they really became friends. Those days when they were stuck together facing death.”

Nolan nodded. “Kind of funny isn’t it. They became friends… and now their sons are just as close. They had a happy ending Varen… and so will we.”

Varen looked back at his friend and smiled. “You forget Nolan… we are nothing like our fathers.”

Nolan shook his head. “I hate to say it but in this case we are… thankfully, it’s the only case, but when it comes to our friendship… we are. We just don’t want to see it yet… who would?”

Varen grabbed Nolan’s arm as he finally saw him. “It’s Sorik’s uncle. I see him. His name is Tolik… come on.”

Varen and Nolan walked through the crowds of people until they reached Tolik’s table. “Tolik, it is I. Varen.”

“Who is your companion?”

“Nolan Reed… son of the father who was friend to my father. I am here about Jennifer Archer.”

Tolik nodded. “Of course you are… she has gone missing and you wish to find her. From what I have heard these Klingons who took her, they aren’t asking for anything. Klingons are not known to ask for ransoms since all they care about is honor. And from what I’m told… revenge as well.”

“Revenge? But none of us has done anything to the Klingons who took her!” Nolan fought.

Varen shook his head and moved his hand to Nolan’s shoulder. “Could this have anything to do with the mission I was on? The one to save Commander Rab?”

“Varen, what the hell are you talkin’ about?”

“It could,Varen, but it is not the only reason they have done this. It isn’t just about you… it’s about all of you. You, Jennifer, Nolan… all the children of Enterprise.”

Varen frowned. “It has to do with Enterprise?! Enterprise made a lot of enemies. Oh god! As did Archer while in command! That’s why they took Jennifer and left it at that. She was most important because she’s Archer’s daughter! They want to hurt the crew in the worse way, by killing the sons and daughters of the crew that served on Enterprise!”

“But that’s insane! There must be at least a hundred kids that are descendants of the crew.”

“They are starting with the bridge crew first. Then they work to the other departments. Kill them each by each. They’ll need us next. Then they’ll need Togi,” Varen muttered.

“Travis and Hoshi’s son? Togi… they’ll never get to him! He’s on a secret mission right now… not even his family can contact him… dad tells me he’s undercover.”

“Just because he hides in shadow doesn’t mean the Klingons will not find him,” Tolik reminded them.

Varen closed his eyes and sighed. “If we want to save Jennifer we first have to get to Togi before something happens to him.”

“How the hell would we find him.”

Varen looked down at the floor and moved his hands through his hair mimicking his father. “We’ll need to talk with Admiral Archer… he knows where to find Togi. He’s the only one who can save him.”

==

“Absolutely not!”

“But sir he’s in danger!” Varen fought.

“You don’t know that! I sent you to talk to Tolik so we could get information… did he even tell you where to find those Klingons?”

“No but he was the one who warned me about the danger Togi’s in! Look Jon, I know you want your daughter back… but as long as the Klingons don’t have me, Nolan and Togi, she’s safe! They want the four of us before they do anything. If we get to Togi we can save him from being taken by the Klingons. If the Klingons get to me first, then Jennifer might have a fighting chance!”

Archer glared at Varen. “If that’s true… then how come they didn’t just take you the day they took Jennifer?”

Varen exhaled and dropped his hands to his sides. “They couldn’t. When I got stabbed trying to save Jennifer my mother protected me while my father tried to get to your daughter. They couldn’t get to me… they had enough trouble getting Jennifer.”

“She never did anything to anyone to deserve this!”

Nolan took a step forward. “Admiral, it wasn’t Jennifer that did anything. It was you. This is all about revenge and honor to the Klingons. That’s all that matters to them and that’s all that this is about. Sometime in your history you did something to these people and now they’re getting back at you in the worst way, by taking your own child along with every other child born by someone of your crew.”

Archer banged his fist on his desk. “I can’t believe this! What did I ever do to them?!”

Varen moved his hand to cover Archer’s fist. “That’s what we have to find out… before it’s too late. The Klingons have a deadline.”

“A deadline?” questioned the admiral.

“Tolik couldn’t tell me what this deadline is but he did tell me it will be on the day that whatever you did… happened. Think of your years on Enterprise… I know there were many of them but just think about your dealings with the Klingons.”

Archer shook his head. “The only time I did anything to anyone was when Duras and his crew were trying to go after me… to gain back their honor. But that was near our third year on the Enterprise… they were going after us but weren’t able to destroy us because of the Expanse. They feared the Expanse.”

Nolan smiled. “That might be it. Whoever’s doing this could be of the crew under Duras. We should look into it.”

Varen frowned and folded his arms lightly. “Doesn’t Togi speak Klingon?”

Nolan nodded. “Better than I ever could. Every time I’ve talked to a Klingon they end up getting the impression that I want to burn their hair off or something like that… I’m not sure what that’s all about.”

Varen smiled at his friend. “Yes… best that you not talk to them before you get us in more trouble. Togi knows almost as many languages as Hoshi. Travis made sure of that, as well as Hoshi.”

“He also has a pretty good standing with the Klingons thanks to a few heroics when they were conducting negotiations with them,” Nolan added.

Archer sighed loudly in frustration. “Fine… I’ll get him here. But Starfleet won’t be too happy with me.”

Varen grinned. “Starfleet hasn’t been happy with you for a while now admiral. Somehow I don’t think this will make much of a difference.”

Nolan chuckled. “At least this time he doesn’t have any Starfleet hostages like when you were-“

“Nolan, just shut up about that before I change my mind,” Archer muttered.

Nolan smiled sheepishly. “Yes sir.”

Yes! The next part! Hmm, killing the children of Enterprise. Interesting. Are the Klingons going to kill them as soon as they're captured, or is it simply enough to imprison them?

Interesting storyline! I can see where Duras would want revenge on Archer, but all of the other crew members? Or is this the Klingon notion of honour? Hmm. Hope the next chapter is coming soon!
