Part Three

“Who the hell are these guys?” Trip asked as he looked out at ship before them.

Captain Reed frowned. “I’m not sure but I know the Orlando won’t be here for a while so we’ll have to disable them ourselves. Trip maybe you should go down to engineering. You still remember how to keep a ship together I’m guessing?”

Trip grinned. “It’s in my blood Cap’n, of course!”

“Good then, if you will, it would be nice to have an expert down there.”

Trip nodded. “On my way.”

While Trip moved out he almost bumped into Nolan Reed who was running from the turbolift. Trip gave him a slight nod before rushing in. Nolan frowned as he saw the ship before him. “What the hell!”

His father looked back at him and glared. “You shouldn’t be here.”

Nolan frowned. “Let me fly the ship. I can do it.”

Malcolm exhaled. He didn’t have time for this! It was then that he was reminded of the talk he’d had with Trip Tucker. He had never seen his son fly but people always said he was an excellent pilot. It was time he trust his son. He gave a small nod. “Fine, go ahead son.” Nolan grinned and ran over to the helm to relieve the officer there. Before Malcolm knew it the ship was dogging almost everything that came their way. His son was good. Real good. Far better than Malcolm would have imagined. He smiled proudly at his son. “That’s my boy.”

“Sir! Shields at seventy percent!”

Malcolm glared at the ship on the screen. “Hail them!”

His communication officer nodded and a strange alien appeared on the screen. Nolan recognized him immediately. “Captain Tholik?”

The alien frowned. “You know of me, Starfleet?”

Nolan shook his head. “I don’t, but my friend Varen Tucker does. He’s been trying to get in touch with you for weeks now. Mr. Tolik told us that you know about the kidnapping of a human female called Jennifer Archer.

Tholik smiled. “Varen is of Starfleet?”

Nolan nodded. “That’s right; we’re not here to arrest you. We just want to get our friend back.”

Tholik took a step closer and cleared his throat. “I see… then I apologize for my attack. As you may know I’m not exactly a friend of the Federation. I’d be happy to help anyone who’s a friend of Tolik but I think it best that we meet in a place a little more to my liking.”

Nolan looked back at his father. Malcolm nodded. “Of course. If you will give us some time to make repairs. Then you can tell us where we’ll be meeting.”

Tholik smiled. “Of course captain. Understood.”

Malcolm watched as the screen went back to show stars and the image of Tholik’s ship. Reed folded his arms and looked at his son. “Good work Nolan.”

Nolan looked up at him and grinned. “Yeah, I know. I am good aren’t I,” he joked.

Malcolm couldn’t help but smile at this man; he still remembered Nolan as a baby who would pee on his shirt while he tried to change his diaper. Ah… such fond memories. Looks like he’s not that little child anymore… perhaps its time I treat him as such.

“What’s the damage?”

“Not much, we should be fine. My father and I did what we could in engineering. All that’s left is for a few relays to be fixed. Nothing too big.”

Captain Reed nodded. “All right, Captain Tholik has picked the meeting place. He’s already there… so he’s waiting for us. Ready phasers just in case for now… and I want to keep shields up but as soon as we get there we’ll need to lower them to show that we mean no harm to him. If he has information we have to do everything in our power to show that we only want the information and then we leave. He already doesn’t trust the federation… we don’t need to make matters worse.”

“Understood,” said Varen. “But sir, what about Captain Clyde? He hasn’t even arrived yet.”

Malcolm smiled. “Don’t worry about them Varen, right now we just need to worry about finding Jennifer. Let’s go.”

Varen looked around at the barren planet just as soon as they beamed down. With him were his father and Nolan Reed. Captain Reed had decided it best to stay on the ship… unlike Archer when he was a Captain, Malcolm Reed was never quite as interested in exploration. As the captain he felt it important to stay on the bridge. Varen deemed him to the most logical captain in Starfleet… no other captain had the sense to put his crew ahead of his own wishes. His logic was part of the reason Varen liked him even if Nolan wasn’t quite as fond of the man.

“Welcome,” Captain Tholik greeted once Varen caught sight of him.

“Captain Tholik, it is good to see you. I’m glad we could meet.”

The captain smiled. “Any friend of Tolik’s and his family is a friend of mine Mr. Tucker. I know of this one, Nolan Reed but what about the other… who is he?”

“The other is my father. Charles Tucker.”

“But you are a Vulcan, how can he be your father?”

Varen smiled. This was not the first time people had asked that question. “My mother is a Vulcan.”

“A Vulcan and a Human? I have never heard of this!”

“Not many have. I am one of the first hybrids of Humans and Vulcans,” Varen explained.

Tholik smiled. “Interesting… I had no idea you were so full of surprises. Come… we have much to discuss.”

“Why do you care so much about this human? Jennifer Archer?”

“She is important to me, she was my friend and much more,” Varen told him.

“I see. She is your mate?”

Nolan chuckled at the expression. “They were just dating.”

“Oh, I see… what is this dating you speak of?”

Varen sighed and glared at Nolan. “I hate to be disrespectful but I came here to discuss the whereabouts of Ensign Jennifer Archer. You said these Klingons who took her hid out on a planet?”

“That is correct Mr. Tucker. I believe they know you well… they were after all trying to get to you too.”

“What are you talking about?” Varen asked him.

“I’m talking about the kidnapping of Commander Rab. Since they could not get to you at the time they used him to get to you. They concentrated all their fire on getting you so that your captain would have to leave without you.”

Varen’s frown grew. “They shot me in the stomach… Captain Clyde had to carry me out himself. No wonder they tried to me separate from the others. They wanted me….”

Tholik nodded. “It seems that all of you are in great danger. They were able to get to Jennifer Archer. If you go after them they will get you.”

Varen nodded. “I know. But I have no other choice.”

Tholik smiled before handing him a padd that had been in his hand. “This is all you will need to find her. This is all I can give you without putting myself at risk. I know many things Varen… but sometimes I have to look out for myself. I hope this helps you find her… without getting yourself killed of course.”

Varen chuckled. “Thank you. I’m sure it will help me a lot, captain.”

“I’m sure it will. Be careful. You as well, Mr. Nolan Reed. I like you… you make me laugh.”

Nolan grinned. “I do believe that’s the nicest things anyone has ever said to me!”

Varen shook his head. “I think he might be right about that. Thanks again, Tholik… we better go. We have to download these findings into the ship’s computer.”

Tholik nodded and watched the floor leave. “Charles Tucker!”

Trip turned around. He’d stayed quiet the entire time. “Yes Cap’n?” Trip asked with slight interest.

“You seem to have raised an honorable son. You should be proud.”

Trip grinned along with Varen. “Believe me, friend… I am. Both my wife and I are very proud. Thanks.”

Trip nodded respectfully to him before they finally left. Varen was grinning still at his father. “What?” he finally asked.

“Oh nothing,” he told her before moved to get his com unit and opening it. “Tucker to Ranken… four to beam out.”

==

“Well?”

“We scanned for the planet we’re looking for. Fifty Klingon life signs… one human. She’s there all right,” Nolan, answered Varen.

Varen smiled as he was shown the scans. “Then the captain was telling us the truth. Good work Nolan… I’m sure Jennifer thanks you.”

Nolan nodded. “I did it for the both of you Varen… who am I to get in the way of true love anyway?” he teased.

Varen glared at him. Nolan never changed.

Good story, amusing to see how Malcolm views his son and realises he is a very fine pilot in his own right. Nice. Ali D :~)

At the end, Varen says "four to beam up." Only three of them beamed down from the ship: Varen, Nolan, and Trip. Unless the captain is getting a lift too.

Nice chapter. Atta boy Nolan, you show your dad. Atta boy Malcolm, listen to what you've been told, and shower Nolan with praise.

Oh yeah Phaser Lady... sorry about that. Originally I was going to have another person down with them but then decided not to and I guess I missed that mistake. lol
