Part Four

When Reed’s ship finally reached the planet where the Klingons were hiding out it was there that they met the Orlando that they’d made contact with telling them where they should go. Varen looked at Jonathan Archer and smiled lightly. He looked so worried. Jennifer was all he had left. Varen could understand how he felt, even if in his case that wasn’t a problem.

This time Malcolm Reed had decided to join the away mission. He, Nolan, Varen, Archer, Trip and T’Pol stood on the planet that seemed so familiar. He knew this place because it was the same place they’d taken Commander Rab too. In other words, there would be tricks. It wasn’t exactly a very Klingon thing to do but in this case it seemed they wanted to be cleverer than normally. This wasn’t just about battle anymore. This was about honor, something more important than anything else. “I’ve been here before. There are at least three different caves around here. We’ll need to split up,” Varen told them.

Trip looked over at Archer. “Right. T’Pol and I can look in the first one.”

Archer nodded. “Varen and I can take the second.”

Varen smiled at Nolan. “Then that just leaves you and your father, Nolan. Have fun!”

Nolan glared at him then let out a long sigh. Varen could already tell Nolan didn’t like being partnered with his father one bit, but he knew they would need some time alone to talk. And he was pretty sure the Klingons wouldn’t be in the third cave. Archer smiled at Varen and shook his head. “Let’s get going people, we have a lot of searching to do.”

It was getting dark and they’d been searching through the large caves for nearly five hours. Trip had never seen caves so huge. They’d decided to set up camp for the night, and they’d contacted the others who were going to do the same thing. Trip hadn’t expected this at all. He looked over at his wife and noticed her shiver immediately. Being bonded with her made him in tune with how she felt at all hours. He knew her innermost thoughts. He knew all her secrets. But most of all he knew when she was lying which he was sure she would soon do. “You look cold.”

“I am fine.”

Well he was right. He always was. He let out a small chuckle and shook his head. Would she ever stop being so stubborn? He doubted it. She was just like her father. A shiver moved down his back at the thought… it was best not think about that. He never did get along with T’Pol’s father. “I’m sure your very fine T’Pol, just cold.” He moved over to her and pulled her in his arms. She moved willingly into him as close as she could get. He smile down at her and again chuckled. “Ya know T’Pol you’re still just as stubborn as the first day I met you. Guess that’s one thing you’ll never get rid of huh?”

“Perhaps. Then it is good our son did not gain either of our stubbornness.”

Trip frowned. “Unless of course it involves someone he loves. I guess he got his passion from me.”

T’Pol moved his head around to look at her. “Your passion is one thing that made me love you and this same passion put into our son makes Jennifer love Varen. I am glad he got that from you, it has made him a far better person than I.”

“He’s a better person because of you T’Pol, and that my dear is what made ME love you even more than I did before we had him. It’s also why I don’t think there could ever be a time when I stop loving you.”

T’Pol moved her head up to him and kissed him deeply. Trip returned the kiss just as deeply as their mouths opened and the familiar touch of their tongues sent pleasure through them both. She’d always been it for him. Ever since the day she’d opened up to him. When they finally broke he smiled down at her warmly before kissing her forehead.

He’d promised to be with her forever and now he suddenly realized there was nothing else for him to do. He was more than just bound to her, just as she was bound to him. They shared one heart, one soul, and one spirit. She was his life. She’d given him a son and she’d given him her love. He just hopped that maybe one day Varen and Jennifer would finally have the same gift he had with T’Pol. That gift where he knew he’d never be alone again. That gift where he would always have someone to lean on, someone to love and someone to trust with everything he had. He wished that same kind of happiness for his son. And Trip was determined to get it for him.

“Father?”

Malcolm looked up at his son who had returned from his search deeper into the cave looking for water. “Anything?”

Nolan smiled before throwing the packs filled with water to him. “You know you really shouldn’t drink so much. Wasn’t it you that taught me that?”

“I’m getting old Nolan. I can’t live without all my fluids I’m afraid.” There was an uncomfortable silence for a long time before Nolan sat down by the fire they’d made. “Son?”

“Yeah dad?”

“You know you’re even better than Travis was on the Enterprise.”

Nolan smiled. “I’d hope so, he was the one that taught me everything I know.”

Malcolm frowned. “Really?”

His son nodded. “Remember when I would go over Togi’s house almost everyday?”

“Yes.”

“I was really getting lessons from his father. I wanted to tell you but I knew how you’d react. Travis could see I had a gift, so he taught me everything he could before he died. It was then that I knew what I had to do. I was a pilot, even if it meant hurting you. I couldn’t ignore what I loved most.”

Malcolm let out a sigh before moving closer to his son. “How come you never just told me how important flying was to you? I would have understood.”

“You hated the fact that I’d chosen to be a helmsman! We had a long fight because of it. It was the reason why we stopped talking to each other!”

Malcolm knew it was true. He had been disappointed but more than that he hadn’t been able to understand why his son would chose to be something like that over following in his father’s footsteps like Varen had decided to with Trip. It had hurt Malcolm. “I’m sorry Nolan. I guess I just couldn’t see what was right in front of my face. I wish I could change what was said but I can’t. Still, perhaps I can right a wrong.” Malcolm smiled at his boy and put his hand on Nolan’s shoulder. “I’m proud of you son and I love you.”

Nolan cocked his head for a moment, as if trying to figure out if he was telling the truth or not. Finally he moved his hand to his father’s shoulders. “I love you too dad,” Nolan told him before smiling. “I mean even though your annoying and all. I suppose it’s just something I’ll have to learn to live with.”

Both Reed men laughed together for the first time in ages. Nolan had forgotten how much he’d missed being with his father the way they were now. If felt nice. It was then that both heard it at the same time. They looked back deeper into the cave. “Did you hear that?”

Nolan nodded slowly. “I did. It sounded like two people talking in Klingon.”

Both looked at each other before Malcolm grabbed for his communicator. “I think it time to call the others.”

“They won’t be here for at least ten hours. You know that just as much as I do.”

“Of course I do Nolan… but there are going to be a lot of Klingons we’ll have to deal with. And for now I think it’s important that we have help… unless your better at fighting then I thought.”

Nolan grinned. “I may be a helmsman but I can still kick a Klingon’s ass any day. It’s in my blood.”

Malcolm nodded. “I’ll call for them, in the meantime perhaps we should go in for a closer look eh?”

Nolan’s grin grew. “Jolly good.”

Archer shut his communicator and walked over to Varen swiftly. “Malcolm thinks he’s found where their hiding Jennifer. He’s going to go deeper into the cave to see what’s going on but apparently he heard Klingon voices.”

Varen nodded. “Is he going to contact the Orlando so Togi can translate?”

“That’s the plan. He’ll just have to see how close he can get. Come one, we have a lot of walking to do if we’re gonna get to them before they get themselves killed.”

“That’s a ten hour walk you know,” Varen reminded him.

“That’s why we have to start now. Come on.” Varen grabbed his things and followed Archer back out of the cave. It was then that Archer looked over at him and frowned. “You know Varen, if it weren’t for you we’d never have found her.”

Varen smiled. “She’s not safe just yet sir. Perhaps you should reserve judgment until after all this is over.”

“Perhaps but I just wanted you to know you kept your promise and for that I’m eternally grateful.”

“Sir, she’s all you have. I know how you’d feel if you ever lost her because it’s how I’d react as well. We both love her even if it’s in different ways and I also made another promise to you that for a while I did not keep. I told you I would always be there for her, that I’d protect her. I have not done this and if it takes me forever to make it up to the both of you then that’s what I’ll do.”

Archer moved his hand to rest on Varen’s shoulder. “You know, if I had to pick one man that Jennifer could fall in love with it would be you every time.”

Varen’s smile grew as he stopped and looked at the admiral. “You don’t know how much that means to me sir.”

Jonathan shook his head. “I’m not sir, I’m Uncle Jon, remember?”

Varen laughed as they continued on. “Then Uncle Jon it is, that is of course until of course I have to start calling you dad.”

Archer winced. “I think you have a few more years before that happens son, hopefully.”

Malcolm moved closer and closer to the lights and movement before them. Nolan stopped and ducked behind a rock then turned to his father. “I can hear them. Get Togi on the com channel,” he whispered.

Malcolm took out his communicator. “Reed to Mayweather.”

“Togi here.”

“Ready?”

“Move the communicator as close as you can. When they stop talking or leave I’ll tell you what they said, hopefully.”

Malcolm nodded then moved the communicator as told. The father and son watched the Klingons speaking to one another for nearly an hour then finally they moved out of range. Malcolm grabbed the communicator. “Well?”

“Their leader must be the one called Dokah and I also heard the name Kalvar… it sounds like they’re brothers. I also heard the name Duras, they said something about doing the job he couldn’t finish and gaining the honor he lost. They mainly talked about what was happening to Jennifer. It seems they’ve been treating her fairly well as they wait for me, Varen and Nolan, once they have us all they’ll kill us and then after a year they plan on killing the original crew. But first they wanted you all to pay, to suffer. Sir, I think they’re expecting us. The officer Kath asked the other officer Tor if we’d arrived yet and Tor said no.”

“At least they don’t know we’re here yet,” Nolan offered.

Malcolm nodded. “For now, but that could change pretty quickly son. We may be walking into a trap.”

Nolan looked back at where the Klingons had been. “What about the others… Trip and T’Pol… Archer and Varen?”

Malcolm sighed. “Let’s hope they aren’t detected, because if they are….”

“We’re dead,” Nolan interrupted. “And so is Jennifer.”

Ooooh, this is getting very good. Can't wait to see what happens next! The thought that the Klingons might have out-smarted them is a painful one but sounds possible given the conversation Togi translated. Ali D :~)
