Storm Front - Part 1

4-01 Storm Front, Part 1

reviewed by Kevin Thomas Riley

On my 1-10 scale (with 1 being God awful, 5 average/good and 10 excellent) I'll give it a 6.

I thought it was a rather good episode, especially given the crappy premise Berman & Braga left ENT with at the end of last season. Still it didn't have any dull or dragging moments. It was fast paced and kept you on the edge of your seat most of the time.

Archer surprised me. He did a good job here and the reunion was touching, especially the hug from Hoshi and the friendly pat he gave Malcolm. T'Pol looked like she saw a ghost. And poor Porthos. I really felt for the pup and that reuniting was perhaps the sweetest of them all.

Archer handled himself very nice in Brooklyn with the resistance. And Alicia was a great character. She really rocked and Golden Brooks is quite pretty too.

The Germans might have been a bit clichéd but we never really saw that many of them besides the grunts. Only that Major General in the White House (that exterior scene was BTW too obviously a CGI shot I'm afraid, as were the P-51 and shuttlepod). The baddies were of course those aliens. A nice touch to dress them in Nazi uniforms but I can't for the life of me figure out why they only made the Vosk character a lowly SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel). That made no sense at all. He had the same rank equivalent as Trip for God's sake! And how is it that the Nazis, xenophobic as they where, suddenly allied themselves with extra-terrestrials? I guess you could argue that they were made "honorary Aryans" just like the Japanese, but still, it's a bit of a stretch.

That nit-picking aside, I enjoyed the episode. But perhaps my anticipation got the better of me. I'm so looking forward to this season. Even if it was very action oriented it still had some nice character interactions. Archer was great with Alicia and the mobsters. Trip got to show off his fighting skills even if Silik cheated in the end, and even Travis had something else to do besides manning the helm.

Trip and T'Pol, the little that was shown, was very good. Come to think of it, their scene in the Captain's office was maybe the only one that wasn't entirely plot driven. They felt very relaxed and comfortable around each other. She didn't seem to mind his outburst - which I didn't think was that harsh really - we've seen worse from him in the past. They talked about more personal stuff like what they'd do when they got home. It was quite nice.

As for T'Pol's look, I think she looked good albeit very worn. I think they deliberately made her make up so that she would look that way, stressed out and with dark circles under her eyes and everything.

The Daniels make up was a bit gross but I've seen worse on every Vidiian on VOY before so it didn't bother me.
