Summary: Trip gets out of sickbay and starts to assimilate Sim's memories.

********************

She found him in the mess hall, as she knew she would, staring out a viewport. It was late, nearing 2400. Dr. Phlox had released him from Sick Bay two days ago, with a word that he should try to sleep for a while without the aid of Vulcan neuropressure. But she knew him too well, even better than she liked to admit to herself. These last few months of nightly contact, with their endless conversations, had given her more insight into his mind and soul that she had ever experienced with a human…or Vulcan for that matter.

She suspected that Commander Tucker used the technical discussions and “small talk” as he called it to keep his mind off of the intimate nature of their sessions. On some level, she was grateful for the distraction as well.

All of these experiences and her growing closeness with the Commander had led her here to the Mess Hall tonight, even though she had no logical reason to believe that he would be here. ‘There should be no intuition’ she thought. ‘Intuition is not logical’ her Vulcan trained mind told itself. The message did not get very far.

“I kinda figured you’d be comin’” Trip said, without taking his eyes away from the stars.

“How did you know it was me?” T’pol asked him. Had their sessions finally begun to form the beginnings of a physical telepathic link?

She had briefly worried about that eventuality when they began the neuropressure treatment. Among Vulcans, who were touch telepaths, neuropressure always included a light telepathic bond. When they had first begun, she had dismissed this idea as ludicrous. Vulcans and Humans would never be able to bond in that way.

However, lately she had found herself doubting that premise. There were incidents; incidents that shook her to her core when she thought about them. A month ago, while on the bridge, she had felt his impending presence, and not five seconds passed before he stepped off of the turbolift onto the Bridge.

Then there was the embarrassing moment in this very mess hall a few weeks later. She was talking with the Captain as they were retrieving their drinks from the dispenser. Commander Tucker had walked up and, without seeing or hearing him, she asked him for his opinion on the subject at hand. The Captain’s look of amazement and the Commander’s wry grin were enough to almost make her lose her Vulcan façade. She explained it away as superior Vulcan hearing. The truth was far more disturbing in its implications. She truly had thought that he was standing with her and the Captain all along. He had been on the far side of the room talking with Malcolm, but to her it felt as if he were standing beside her.

She did not like the thought of what this meant, so she pushed the thought away…which in itself was a very telling, very human, response.

Trip’s words brought her back to the present.

“Saw ya’ in the reflection of the window” he said.

She should have been relieved…not disappointed.

“How are you feeling, Commander?” she asked in her most neutral voice.

“Not too bad, considering…” Trip told her. “I’ve been having some pretty weird dreams the last coupl’a nights, though. Bizarre stuff” he continued. “I told Phlox about them, and he seems to think that my mind is incorporating the memories of Sim as the graft takes hold. My dreams last night were really Sim’s first memories…the tank, Dr. Phlox, Hoshi teaching me to read.”

Fear, very un-Vulcan-like fear, shot through her body. Her limbs trembled.

“How much of his life have you been able to recall?” she asked, her voice just barely quivering.

“Not much yet” he replied. “Doc seems ta think that I’ll remember more each night as my subconscious integrates Sim’s conscious…or something like that.”

“Did the Doctor give you any indication of when these memories would be fully integrated?” Her voice was in definite danger of cracking now.

“He says that human neuro-pathways are laid down at uniform rate…so each day of Sim’s life should be relived each night in my unconscious mind,” he told her. “That puts my dreams back to normal in about two weeks. Until then, I’ll be livin’ someone else’s life each night…which I guess is only fittin’, since he lived my life each day.”

T’pol noticeably relaxed.

Two weeks.

She had two weeks to explain the revelation…and the kiss.

She had no doubt that she would be able to come up with a plausible explanation in two weeks.

… or perhaps in that time, she might finally be able to face the truth herself…

A whole mess of folks have made comments

I liked this one.
Q

Of the many post-similtude stories, I like this one the best so far. It is more direct and believable IMHO. Good stuff.

This is one of the best similitude stories I've read so far. I hope you continue:)

I just love it. When is the next chapter going to be up?

I love it. The curiosity is killing me. Is Trip going to be rightfully embarrassed/amused when he remembers the crush Sim had on T'pol during his teen years. I can just see Trip stumbling all over that one in embarrassment until he remembers the kiss. How many days was it between Sim asking her out and that kiss? Three, Four. I can't wait to read your next chapter.

Absolutely superb!

Perfect. Just PERFECT!!

And pleaaaaaaase: write a sequel!!!!!

I appreciate everyone's positive comments. This is the first time I've ever written anything like this before...but I do plan to write a sequel in the next few days. I've gotten some good ideas from your comments. Thanks!

This was great and yes, it does REQUIRE a sequel! Thanks!

Oh my... oh this is very interesting... I like the premise and hope to heck it happens.

Niiiice. There's gonna be more, right?

Loving this!!!! Keep it up!!!! I have a feeling this is gonna be interesting!

Great! I'm so glad there will be a sequel. I love the idea of T'Pol being so aware of Trip, whether it's really a telepathic bond or just that she's in lurve with him. :) And I can't wait to see what her explanation of the kiss will be.

Nooooooo! When's the next one? I must see it!
