Summary: How did Varen’s class react to his paper?
A/N: I don’t know if Varen Tucker is a Gary Stu or not… but I think he’d make an interesting character. But anyways you might wanna check out Hero before you read this. This is for you Ali D… and of course any others looking for things I had left out! And who can forget HopefulNebula (my beta) who apparently is graduating… congrats!

“Varen?”

Varen stood and walked to the front of the class and cleared his throat.

“My father is a Human. He has not always been logical but I could not ask for a better father. He always put my needs before his… even when it wasn’t easy to do. When my mother first met my father all she could see was what was on the outside. The illogical human that seemed smug and careless. But things were not what they seemed to be.

I asked my mother when she first began to see who he truly was. She told me the story and I could not suppress my surprise. My mother had a choice to make. Come back to Vulcan and marry a man she did not even know or stay on Enterprise. She asked my father for his advice, and all he told her was to do what SHE wanted to do. If she chose to stay on Enterprise, of course it would mean not following tradition but when I pointed this out to her she said something I do not think I will ever forget.

She said… ‘If I had not chosen to stay on Enterprise you would not be here right now. And my life would not be as complete as it is.’

After the Xindi attack on Earth many things changed for my father. He lost his sister in the attack and his more volatile emotions seemed to temporarily take over. It was a dark period for my father but even then his relationship with my mother only grew. When my mother chose him to be her mate he did whatever he could to learn about the Vulcan culture. He wanted to do whatever he could for my mother.

But there is one thing I will never forget. Here he was never treated right because he was human and yet he was willing to leave his life back on Enterprise… the place he worked years to get to just so that I would have everything even though I didn’t deserve it. He gave up everything for me. I owe him my life… and my respect.

He is and forever will be my hero… the one I most admire. Not because he’s a brilliant engineer or a kind man but because he gave me everything and never asked for anything in return. And if it takes the rest of my life to show him how grateful I am then I am willing. I could not ask for a better father.”

When Varen looked up from his padd he could see the entire class was in stunned silence. No one said a word. Not many had good thoughts about Humans… he was making a bold move by speaking so highly of a Human… even if it was his father. Finally the teacher walked up to him. “That was very good Varen. You put a lot into your paper. You may sit down.”

Varen nodded and walked to his seat to listen to the next person.

========

“Hey!” Varen turned around with a sigh. He knew that voice. All he’d wanted to do is get home to give his paper to his father. He didn’t want any trouble… but somehow trouble always seemed to find him. How illogical. He swallowed as he watched Sorvin walk over to him with balled fists. He was technically not violent but he seemed very pleased to get a reaction out of Varen. Sorvin was one person who enjoyed calling Varen a half breed.

“Yes, Sorvin?”

Sorvin made his way over to him and Varen got the sudden urge to run. But he kept his feet where they were. He would not be frightened off by this boy. He would not run. It was like his father had once said… ‘Sometimes, kiddo… you’ll haffta stand your ground. You’ll never get anywhere if you run from life.’ He would not run. Sorvin cocked his head and looked at him. “That paper… about your father…” here it comes thought Varen, “it was really interesting.”

Varen’s eyebrows rose. That hadn’t been what he was expecting at all. “You mean you were pleased to have me read it?”

“It was very good. I did not realize Humans could give up so much just so their offspring could have a better life. He really encouraged you to follow the path of Surak?”

Varen almost smiled but decided now was not the time. “When he realized it was what I wanted to do he did everything he could to encourage me. He would sometimes even meditate with me.”

“He would meditate with you? My parents meditate everyday but even they do not meditate with me!”

“Both my father and my mother have been known to meditate with me at times. Anything to encourage the path I have chosen.”

Sorvin looked around as if uncomfortable. Then he looked him in the eye and raised his right hand letting it split in the middle. “Live long and prosper Varen. I hope it is not too late for us to better know each other?”

Varen raised his hand to mimic Sorvin. “It’s never too late to gain a friend.”

Both Sorvin and Varen nodded at each other before while no one was looking giving each other a handshake. “I would very much like that.”

“As would I.”

Varen let himself crack a small smile. Perhaps his report would do some good after all.

“Interesting paper, Half-Breed,” Varen heard from somewhere nearby… he knew exactly who it was. He let out a long, annoyed sigh. May Surak be with him.

The End… for now!

A/N: More to come later! I just thought I’d give you guys this before introducing my next story!

Cute addition.

Thanks Triplover, you made my day! This was a scene I had been hoping you would write and I loved it that Varen's honesty even touched Sorvin. Live long and prosper, Ali D :~)

Hi... just snapped through your story... I'm interested in knowing how you came up with the name Sorvin ? Cause thats a real family name...

Truth be told, "The Real Sorvin" I just sorta made it up. I do that a lot. Just put letters together and come up with whatever... it's kinda my thing. Great username by the way! ;)
