Part Five

Trip and T’Pol emerged from the cave. Trip was breathing hard as he wiped the sweat from his brow. “Got here in four hours, not bad. I’m about to pass out, but not bad.”

T’Pol moved over to her husband’s side and helped him as he drank down the water from their packs. “I told you that it was better if you took it easy. You’re exhausted.”

“I’ll be fine.”

T’Pol’s eyebrows rose. “You are a terrible liar, especially when I can easily read your mind.”

Trip smiled. “Hey, you do it all the time, so don’t even try that one. You know you’re just as terrible as I am.”

T’Pol paused. “Perhaps, but I’m not the one gasping for air,” she reminded him.

“Father?”

Both looked up to see Archer and Varen walking over to them. Varen looked worried. “Hey son,” Trip greeted.

“Are you okay Trip?” Archer asked before Varen could.

Trip smiled. “I’m fine, just old.”

Archer smiled back at him and rubbed his back. It wasn’t until then that Trip saw just how tired and worn out Archer was himself. “You’re not kidding! I think I’m starting to miss all that paperwork back home.”

Trip grunted. “Didn’t think I’d ever hear you say that one Jon….”

Jonathan shook his head. “Neither did I.”

“We should continue on. I contacted Togi and I believe he’s worried that the Klingons have prepared for our arrival. If that’s true we need to come up with a game plan, in the meantime we have to get to Captain Reed and Nolan,” Varen told them.

His mother moved an arm around her husband. “Perhaps I can help.”

Trip shrugged her away. “T’Pol don’t even think bout it! I may be old but I’m not helpless for god’s sake! I can walk on my own thank ya very much!”

T’Pol let out a frustrated sigh as the four headed for the third cave. Varen grinned. “Father, has anyone told you you’re as stubborn as a Vulcan?”

“One hour left before they get here,” Nolan announced.

Malcolm rolled his eyes. “I wish you’d stop doing that.”

Nolan shrugged, “Sorry dad but it keeps my mind off things. Just sitting here like this is making me nervous.”

Malcolm could certainly understand that, he felt the same way. “That’s understandable son but perhaps you can find more productive ways of calming your nerves, like thinking of home or of a certain young lady, or perhaps thinking up a plan of attack that will help us get Jennifer out of there.”

Nolan shook his head. “Security officer to the end. I don’t know how you stay sane without getting the chance to blow something up every once in a while.”

“I manage, but it’s very difficult,” Malcolm said before smiling at him.

Nolan had to stop himself from chuckling at his father’s comment. He hadn’t realized how funny his father could be at times. “I suppose although I may not be exactly like you, there is one thing we both have in common.”

“What’s that?”

Nolan grinned. “We both love explosions.”

Varen moved slowly through the shadows of the cave as he went to get a closer look. He’d always been pretty good at sneaking up on people, he’d done it to his parents all the time when he was little though at times he wished he hadn’t. Nothing like catching your parents engaging in intimate acts to make you regret sneaking in on them when you’re supposed to be asleep. Varen had learned the hard way and to this day he made sure to knock no matter who it was or what time it was. He didn’t want to repeat a mistake like that anytime soon especially when he was still working hard to rid images of that mistake.

Finally he could hear the voices again and he smiled as he saw the two Klingons deep in conversation. Varen looked back at his best friend Nolan and the two nodded at each other before gripping their weapons and jumping out of the shadows shooting. Both Klingons fell to the floor before they even knew what happened and just as soon as it happened they could hear yells from other Klingons probably shouting that there were intruders.

They’d scanned for Jennifer’s life signs. She was here all right and they were going to get her away from those Klingon bastards. Varen glanced back at his parents, Malcolm Reed, Nolan and Archer. He then gave them a smile before moving down the cave through the right tunnel while the others took the left.

Varen and Nolan walked silently through the cave keeping an eye out to any sounds of movement. “How much longer?”

Nolan looked down at his scanner. “Just keep going. I’ll tell you when we’re close. There’s no one anywhere near here.”

“But you still can tell Jennifer’s here can’t you?”

“Of course I can Varen! Just keep going we’ll get there soon enough.” The two walked in silence for a long time before Nolan looked back at him. “Thanks.”

“For what?”

“If you hadn’t forced me to be with my father I might of never talked to him about the wedge between us. So thanks.”

Varen smiled at him. Since they were kids Nolan’s father had always been a sore subject. Nolan had never been very close to Captain Reed and at times there seemed to be no hope for either of them to have a true relationship at all. Varen sometimes wondered if that wedge between them would ever go away, he was glad to see that it could be him to get them talking. Perhaps they could have the same bond he had with Sorik. “Nolan, you’re my friend. I just wanted you to be happy. You don’t have to thank me for that.”

Nolan looked back at his scanner. “I know, but I wanted to.”

This was it. Five Klingons stood near another tunnel inside the cave with weapons in hand. Varen and Nolan watched them closely from behind the large rock before them. “We need a plan,” Nolan whispered finally.

Varen rolled his eyes. “Of course we need a plan! We just need a distraction and then we can attack them from behind.”

“How exactly are we gonna do that?”

Varen smiled at his friend before taking a few small pebbles and throwing them far to the other side of the cavern. The Klingons looked that way instantly before three began to move towards the sound to investigate. Varen moved his weapon up and aimed it at the other two guards. Nolan did the same and both fired at the same time. “Like that! Now run like hell!” Varen shouted as the other Klingons began to shoot at them. Nolan and Varen ran past the guards on the floor through the next tunnel both hoping it would lead to Jennifer. It was a long run with gunfire shooting past them the entire time until finally they saw her.

Jennifer looked over at the two men and her eyes widened in fear. “It’s a trap! Get out of here!”

“Not without you Jen!” Varen fought before running towards her. Nolan did the same as they worked to untie her just as a force field rose around them. Varen looked up just as the Klingons entered the passage they’d just come from.

“Hello Mr. Tucker,” greeted one of them before stepping forward. “Nice of you and your dear friend to join us. We have been expecting you.”

Trip was worried. “T’Pol, I heard phaser fire.”

“I heard it as well.”

Trip looked over at Admiral Archer and then frowned. “It must be Varen and Nolan, they’re in trouble!”

Malcolm took a step up to Trip. “Then we have to go after them! Those are our children there!”

Trip put his hands on Malcolm’s shoulder. “Malcolm, we need a plan. Is there anyway we can make some type of a diversion or somethin’? If Varen and Nolan are caught we’ll need time to get to them.”

Malcolm smiled. “I think I have a diversion that will work quite nicely.”

Varen just looked at the Klingon standing before him. “What do you want from me Kalvar?”

Kalvar smiled at Varen before letting out a very unsettling laugh. “I want to get what my father never could. I want my honor, along with your head. Right next to the head of your human woman there and her father’s as well. Captain Duras failed where I will succeed. Archer will die but not before he looses everything of value to him.”

Varen glared at the Klingon. “You won’t win, Kalvar. Archer’s smarter than that, he’ll kill you for taking his daughter, and then he’ll kill the rest of your friends for taking us as well.”

“Oh Vulcan? Is that so?”

Varen took a step closer. “It is so, very so.”

The Klingon laughed once again sending another shiver down Varen’s spine just before they heard phaser fire. The Klingon turned around weapon drawn just as another one of his men fell. Archer, Trip, T’Pol and Malcolm appeared from one of the tunnels. “Lower the field!” Archer ordered.

Kalvar glared at Archer then turned to lower the field but instead of just backing away he grabbed Jennifer and pointed his gun to her head. Varen moved forward but wasn’t fast enough. “Come any closer Vulcan and she will die! I will gain back my honor!”

Archer took a step closer. “I’ve never known a Klingon to take a hostage.”

“I will not die as a dog! I came here because I knew this was the only way I could gain back my honor and I will not fail! What is that human phrase I’ve heard? Desperate times call for desperate measures?”

It was then that Trip moved closer and put his hand on Varen’s shoulder. He pulled his son back and when Varen looked at his father Trip shook his head. Varen nodded and stood next to Archer along with Nolan, Malcolm, his mother and Trip. This was Archer’s child and he was the one who needed to take care of this. “If you hurt her you will die. Pull that trigger and you’ll die a dog with no honor and your family still a disgrace.”

Kalvar smiled showing his sharp pointy teeth. “My father was right about you. You are a clever one. Perhaps I won’t be able to die with my honor but I can still hurt you.” The Klingon pushed Jennifer to the floor and pointed his weapon.

T’Pol saw the rest that happened in slow motion, the gun pointing near her at Varen Tucker, her son. Panic filled her immediately as instinct took over logic. Nothing else mattered as she watched the Klingon begin to pull the trigger. There was only one thing left to do. She ran for her son pushing Varen down. The gun went off as the two fell to the ground, one with a phaser burn in their stomach.
